You can now track monsters' Hit Points and roll directly from their stat blocks in Maps! This update to Maps' combat encounter capabilities is another big step toward freeing up work from Dungeon Masters so they can focus on the fun while running their session.

Ready? Fight!
New to using the official D&D virtual tabletop? The Maps VTT is available for Master Tier subscribers and allows you to populate your digital playspace with tokens and maps from your D&D Beyond library. Once your battle map is prepared, you can invite your players regardless of their subscription and play together in a digital environment! To help you get started, we have articles detailing how to set up encounters within Maps, as well as a comprehensive guide to using Maps.
Tracking monster Hit Points and rolling from their stat blocks is one of the latest improvements we've made to the Maps VTT, and more features are on the way!
Tracking Hit Points
Put down that pen and paper; you can now track monster Hit Points right in Maps' Initiative Order interface! Once you've hit "Start Combat" in the Combat Encounter menu, you’ll see that monster Hit Points have now become clickable. Clicking a monster's Hit Points will bring up the Hit Points management menu, where you can apply damage or healing on the go.
Customize Your Creatures on the Fly
If you have a particularly beefy–or feeble–monster and want to change its Hit Point maximum, you can enter the new value in the Override Max HP field. You can also give the monster Temporary Hit Points by using the Temp HP field. Now, if that Vampire Warlock you've cooked up activates its Regeneration ability and casts Armor of Agathys on the same turn, you won't be erasing and scribbling to try to keep track of their Hit Points!
Stat Blocks and Rolling
Want to handle Initiative without having multiple tabs open or consulting your rulebooks? Now, you can access all of your monsters' stat blocks inside the Maps VTT!
Quickly Roll Ability Checks and Saving Throws
When you select a monster in the Initiative Order, you'll be shown its six ability scores and their bonuses for ability checks and saving throws. Clicking any of the numbers will roll the applicable ability check or saving throw and display it in the Game Log. These rolls are only visible to the Dungeon Master and will be hidden from the Game Log in Spectator View.
Access the Entire Stat Block for Attacks and Abilities
If you need to access a monster's attacks or other abilities (as is often the case in a combat encounter), you can view the monster's full stat block by clicking the "Open Monster's Stat Block" button at the bottom of its summary.
From here, you can make attack and damage rolls for your monster. You can also click any other rollable aspect of the monster's stat block, such as ability recharges. If you need additional information about a monster's abilities, like when it imposes a condition you can't remember the rules for, you can access this by clicking on the associated link.
If you want to see the monster's stat block in its original form, click the "Go to full details page" button to the right of the monster's name to open its classic stat block in a new tab.

I noticed that unlike the encounter tool on the website, on maps I cannot use enemies I do not own digitally. Is this an intended change?
Absolutely stoked. 🙌🙌
I love it! No more having to prepare encounters in the encounter tool. I can prepare them all in each map and make quick encounters on the fly! Works with homebrewed monsters as well! I am loving how easy Maps is to use!
Great job on the maps!
Can we hide DM rolls?
Mit gefällt wohin sich das entwickelt.^^
This is amazing news, I thought you would wait for the release of the Monster Manual to add this, thanks for doing it early!
They're hidden by default. If you're making generic rolls from the game log, you can also make them public
But I want to see my dice!
Will maps eventually allow animated maps?
Great update, I love it, personally I only miss being able to reroll the initiative in each round. With that I could replace my own excel tool as combat manager with all that comes with maps, and it would be fantastic! I don't know if there are plans for this, but I'd love to know.
This might be the update that finally has me using DnDBeyond Maps.
OK...just been testing...I've been using the My Encounters for a while now.. and while its good to have this - I'm hoping they will marry the 2 up and continue support for my encounters (which is not currently 2024 compatible) - here is my feedback.
1. Pre-building encounters is very helpful, not sure that we can do that with the map?
2. Stat blocks work better on My Encounters and appear very quickly to the side.. maps took ages to load and appear in the window below..
3. Does the player's initiative role work on the maps as it does on My Encounters - I'm assuming so.
4. I use different tokens fairly often and change the name - because the players get used to a token meaning a monster or I want to do a non-combat situation with the tokens before a fight...
I'll keep testing.. anyway.. bottom line please keep support for My Encounters..
Now we're talking. This was probably the one update to maps that was really missed to make it fully functional.
But there are still some quirks, like you can not roll dis/advantage or critical hits on the monster statblocks in maps.
Thank you. Now bring back EOTW and you'll really make DMs with more ambition than time really happy!
Thanks Dev Team! This is a big step forward! This VTT is really getting there as a usable light VTT.
Personally, I still have one more development I need to see before I'd use this in a live game, and I've said this before a few times: Drag Ruler. I just need to see how far I'm dragging my tokens when I move them, please.
Conditions or at least a text field per combatant where I can note conditions and effects by hand would also be super handy, please!
My thanks to the dev team!
It's looking great so far but I have a few requests.
Please add the option to overwrite the token images. It's kind of annoying that there are so many monsters without images, I'm used to get custom images for those, and currently it's the only thing holding back my move from AboveVtt to maps.
Another important feature that is missing is the ability to display the grid, unless I'm missing something, but from my testing, I saw that we can define the grid while we create the maps, but not display it, which limits us to use maps that already have a grid in them, a snap to grid feature would also be cool but I can live without it.
Also, a select tool for the fog would be much appreciated, the geometric forms do the job but take much longer and are less precise than a simple select tool, and just to make it clear what I mean by select tool is something like the select tool on paint where you can choose free form or a rectangular form, and for rectangular you can drag the mouse to make it different sizes and adjust the area of fog you and to add or remove quicker.
Yes!!! Been waiting for this, great job!
Just stopping by to say thank you!
Obviously I am no Dev, but I'm hoping that the 2024 MM will come with new artwork for every single monster and this will instantly solve your issue there. We shall see of course!
