Just announced live on-stream at D&D Live 2020, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is this year’s new D&D adventure. Join us in watching D&D Live 2020 and scouring the the footage for new information about this upcoming new adventure. Or, read the article below as it's updated throughout the weekend with new information about Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden.
This horror-fantasy adventure takes heroes to the frigid wastes of Icewind Dale as a divine evil descends upon land, threatening the Forgotten Realms with eternal night. Your characters begin their adventures in the isolated settlement of Ten-Towns, an aptly named group of ten nearby towns that have banded together in an enduring alliance to survive the dangers of Icewind Dale.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden will be released physically as a 320-page hardcover adventure, and digitally on D&D Beyond with full digital toolset integration of the new monsters, magic items, and more found within. You can preorder it now on the D&D Beyond Marketplace to get special rewards. This story will feature icy environmental danger, modular adventures that can be played separately or together as an overarching story, and over 50 new creature stat blocks, including multiple for Auril the Frostmaiden, a lesser god whose schemes will place the characters—and all of Icewind Dale—in mortal peril.
Learn all the secrets of Icewind Dale as D&D Beyond's Todd Kenreck speaks with lead designer Chris Perkins about the mysterious dangers you might encounter in this dark and magical land. This is just the tip of the iceberg, though! See all six of Todd's interviews in our full interview playlist.
As you explore beyond Ten-Towns, a tale of dark fantasy terror unfolds. Eternal night blankets Icewind Dale, and the amoral and power-hungry Arcane Brotherhood seeks to exploit this chaos to unearth and claim a dark and twisted power deep beneath this frozen land.
This is not the first time we’ve seen the Arcane Brotherhood at work in fifth edition D&D. Adventurers who have been with this edition since the beginning may recognize some of their members. You may have allied with the clever and wide-eyed dragon scholar Maccath the Crimson in Rise of Tiamat, done battle with Turbulence and Vengeance, the Horned Sisters in Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and seen fireballs slung from the Hosttower of the Arcane in defense of Luskan in Storm King’s Thunder.
These ambitious wizards have lurked in the background for long enough—now, characters will be faced with their true might directly as the Arcane Brotherhood seeks to break into the Caves of Hunger. What secrets lurk within the heart of this glacier, and can you uncover them before the Brotherhood gets to them first? As apocalyptic night descends upon the frozen north, you might be tempted to do anything in order to survive.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden releases on September 15th, 2020. This story will be updated as more information is revealed throughout D&D Live 2020.

Yeah! White walkers!
Very excited for this.
Any word on whether or not this module will also have the same WPN store discount code that came with pre-ordering the Theros book at a local game store?
Awesome, another adventure set in the Forgotten Realms...
Tbh though, I'm super glad they're finally touching more on Ten Towns and Icewind Dale, ever since reading the Drizzt books I've found that location to be particularly interesting and awesome. And, even though it isn't the Greyhawk or Dark Sun I've been waiting for, I know my DM will be hyped, and I'll be happy to play in it.
A little sugar with the salt, ha I love it.
I think Wizards still have some tricks up their sleeve for this year. I bet we see some other settings get some love.
I hope we see some new cold damage spells with this.
Usually new spells are only in sourcebooks...
I can't wait for this! Awesome!
Have there been any hints on new subclass/race options in this?
I am so excited for this!
I made a Zariel Tiefling Paladin just before they announced Descent Into Avernus last year, then last fall I made a Fallen Aasimar Paladin created by/devoted to Auril... So excited!
James: "Learn all the secrets of Icewind Dale as D&D Beyond's Todd Kenreck speaks with lead designer Chris Perkins about the mysterious dangers you might encounter in this dark and magical land."
Chris Perkins in the first video: "While I may have been more comfortable in years past talking about some of the key aspects of the story, I'm really kind of shying away from that and speaking in generalities so as not to spoil any of the the secrets and surprises."
Cool, glad to see everyone's on the same page.
Usually. There were spells in Princes of the Apocalypse, but that was probably a one time thing.
In one of the interviews it is mentioned that there will be new spells in it as well.
Does anyone know what levels this adventure is for?
The page for pre-order states it's a level 1 to 12 adventure
Well put. Icewind Dale is fun, but I'd really like WOTC to get out their FR comfort zone with their yearly campaign releases and revamp something like Dark Sun or Plansescape. Or even invent something new. But none-the-less, I already pre-ordered it and I am sure it will be quality, like all their stuff is.
I'd been hoping for a Shadowfell-themed campaign with the MToF monsters, but this also looks pretty good
The realms are a big place, I would love to see them do something other then the sword coast. What about Cormyr, or the Dale lands, or maybe a full setting guide, like they did with Eberon.
Levels 1-12 based on the announcement.
They can't. I think I've heard that it's part of their contract with the FR creator. They have to release a new Forgotten Realms book of some sort every year.
EDIT: Replying to LordHennessy
What new sourcebooks do you think they will be coming out with next year/the end of this year.
