Homebrew Aeralfos Race Details

"Take a good look at his shield! When he holds it up, that's your chance! When he's holding his shield up, your arrows will just bounce off...but that's exactly the chance you need! If your timing is right, you could use it to pull him down."

Winged Dinosaurs

Aeralfos claim features of other reptilian races, like scaley hides and cold-bloodedness. If it weren't for their large, pterosaur-like wings, They might be mistaken for lizardfolk. Unlike other similarly blooded races, aeralfos are soft mouthed, possess three-toed, raptor-like feet, and have no frills or spines. Their scales are usually dull green, although shades of red, black, and indigo also occur. Scales on their undersides are light yellow or cream colored, while the leathery wing membrane is orange in most cases.

Typically among aeralfos, only the lightest of clothing is worn, along with steel helmets covering their long, flat foreheads and covering sharp, backwards angled horns. Jewelry of bones, fangs, and beads are worn to further decorate themselves. A colorful round shield and a shortsword are the aeralfos' choice form of arms, but some individuals attach spikes or axe blades to their tails to be used as an extra weapon. Flying with too much clothing slows them down greatly.

Quiet Cities

Aeralfos make their homes in the long abandoned cities of the sky. The cities themselves are mysterious and foreign; and scarcely studied by anyone but fanatics. Most are held in the air by huge propellers, but there is one notable ruin built off a floating rock structure. The aeralfos themselves don't care for the history of their home. It's unknown and uncared how territories of ruins are divided up. Dragons have occasionally taken up residence in the ruins, and some aeralfos devote themselves to the service of these beasts.

Oocca: The Oocca, a creature with the head of a man and the body of a golden chicken, also make their home in the cities in the sky. They have the ability to walk on ceilings and vertical walls as if they were normal ground, and can warp creatures and objects using their chicks.

The cities are rather barren, meaning aeralfos have to value survivalism early on, lest they starve. An Aeralfos may become enticed to travel only so they have loot to bring home, or because of their curiosity about the surface world. They may even adventure for the exotic food they'll get to eat.

Languages and Names

Aeralfos know draconic, but hardly speak unless necessary . Names are not customarily given to aeralfos; those living amongst other races are named by those around them. Names reflect where the aeralfos has chosen to live, for example an individual living among dwarves would likely have a dwarven name, and an individual living among elves might have an elvish one.

Aeralfos Traits

As an Aeralfos, you have certain starting abilities that could be game breaking. As such, special consideration from your DM is necessary to play this race.

Ability Score Increase

You receive a +1 to your wisdom score.

Size

You are slightly taller than an average human, and can make yourself look even larger by opening your wings. Your size is medium.

Claws

Your claws can be used to deal damage in a pinch, dealing 1d6 + your dexterity modifier of slashing damage.

Flight

Your wings make you as comfortable in the air as you are on the ground. Your flying speed is 30. Wearing light - medium armor lowers flying speed to 25, and wearing heavy armor makes it impossible to fly at all.

Aerial Combat

You are so comfortable in the air that all actions from swinging swords to drinking wine feel just as natural in the air as they do on the ground. Any actions taken while flying should be treated as if you were standing on solid ground.

Natural Armor

You have tough, scaly skin. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
