Homebrew Kriol Race Details

Kriols are descendants of Ice Devils that ruled the earth during the last ice age. It is unknown how a gene of such strange creatures found its way to be mixed into blood of humanoid races, for Ice Devils belonged to species so different, that crossbreeding was simply impossible. Some suggest that first Kriols drank the devil’s blood, others say that they started as homunculi in a lab of a mad sorcerer that was researching Ice Devil’s fossils. Nonetheless, one day a race of humanoids with strong affinity to element of ice came to inhabit northern lands of Fangoria’s mountain range and ice desert known as the Ashen Tract. Kriols are in possession of unstable bodies – their body parts can switch from flesh to hardened, magic ice during long rests. This process can be reversed, allowing Kriols to heal themselves by absorbing magical energy from cold based attacks. Some Kriols can use this ability instinctively in order to temporary adjust their limbs to difficult terrain. Race itself does not resemble their progenitors much, as Kriols tend to stop aging after achieving adulthood (after 20 years) – their bodies are rather slim and gaining weight or muscle mass is difficult. Kriols do not form societies and are usually diffused across the world, with the biggest group of several hundred still living in frozen north. Depending on place that they originate from, Kriol hair is either light blue or ashen. Their eyes are in color of dim ice (turquoise), which is why they are easy to recognise among the masses. In order to hide their ancestry Kriols tend to dye their hair and mask their eyes while traveling. Kriol females are considered extremely attractive due to their natural beauty and fact that they do not age after a certain point. Kriols are sometimes treated with distrust due to their faces that lack typical for humanoids expressions – they rarely laugh and won’t smile even in good mood.

Kriol traits come from magic infused blood of Ice Devils that manifests its powers in various ways.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity and Inteligence score increases by 1.

Age

Kriols reach maturity at the age of 20 and cease to age afterwards.

Alignment

Kriols tend to choose neutral style of life, rarely taking a side in wars and conflicts.  

Size

Kriols are between 5 and 6 feet tall and weight between 160 and 220 pounds.  Your size is medium. 

Speed

Your speed is 30ft.

Magnificent Glacier

Your body is capable of absorbing any magical attack and physical attack that is infused with the element of ice (labeled as cold damage). You are healed by amount equal to number of damage points that you would have received. This ability is used as a reaction, no more than once per long rest. 

Eternal Beauty

You cease to age after reaching adulthood, as during long rest your body returns to its ice form and reshapes itself. Once per 24 hours you are able to remove one disease that hinders your body (in case of more than one present, chosen randomly).

Language

You can speak, read, and write Common and one tongue of your choice.

Ashen One

Ashen Ones are Kriols endemic to the Ashen Tract - a great snow desert situated close to the north pole. They rarely leave their isolated neighborhood. Ashen Ones have hair is shades of light gray or completly white. They are known to manipulate ice crystals in order to create mirages. It is said that aurora borealis that appear in the far north is not in fact, not a natural phenomanon, but Ashen Ones practicing magic. 

Ability Score Increase

Your Inteligence score increases by 1.

Zero Absolute

You can command a body of water (in or out of a container) to freeze instantly. Any being caught in this ability will have a disadvantage on its next attack. This ability is used as a bonus action, no more than twice per long rest.

Ice Mirage

Your body temporarily cracks and turns into magical ice that reflects your surrounding as a mirror. All melee attacks aimed at you for the next 10 minutes are at disadvantage. This ability is used as a reaction, no more than once per long rest.

Fangorian

Fangorian Kriol are a subrace living in mountain range of frozen lands called Fangoria. Due to years spent on hunting in frozen climate, they learned to infuse their weapons with element of ice. Fangorian Kriols usually have hair in shade of light blue. 

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Ceaseless Shifting

Difficult terrain has no negative influence on you. Your first attack in encounter at enemy standing on difficult terrain is at advantage.  

Streamline

Once per long rest you are able to cover any slashing or piercing weapon with streamline icicles, causing its counterweight to improve. Streamline weapons used by Kriol turn into finesse weapons (modifier can be chosen to be either Strength or Dexterity).
