Homebrew Nephilim (Aasimar-Tiefling) Species Details
Never before have I found such a race of people who struggle to find their place in the world. On one hand, people praise them for their Celestial heritage, yet they are shamed and belittled for their Infernal heritage. I hope one day they can find a place to call home.
– Gilman Fizzlewix
Nephilim are the product of the rare union between an Aasimar and a Tiefling, which results in a potentially powerful people.
Conflicted Souls
Being the result of a union between an Aasimar and Tiefling, the public’s opinion on the Nephilim puts them in a strange place. On one hand, the Aasimar are a beloved race due to their celestial heritage, but then they are mistrusted and shamed due to their infernal heritage. This results in most people feeling undecided, casting them aside in fear that they might have taken more influence from their infernal heritage. As such, Nephilim usually end up being outcast wherever they travel.
Mixed Bloodlines
Even though a Nephilim are a race of mixed blood between Aasimar and Tiefling, most still hold an appearance similar to humans. This does not mean that their celestial and infernal heritages have left them unmarked. Nephilim can take on any of the various features from their parents. Such as the solidly colored eyes or the horns of a Tiefling, though those horns are usually smaller than a Tiefling’s. They may even possess the golden eyes or pale skin of an Aasimar. However, these are only a few of the possible features that a Nephilim can be born with.
Nephilim Name
Nephilim names will vary, some may choose to use a naming system closer to the Aasimar or the Tiefling. This means that they may end up with a name native to where they are; otherwise they can end up with infernal or virtue names. Though it is not uncommon for a Nephilim to adopt a name of their choosing as they come of age as a sign of independence or rebellion from their heritages.

Fantastic! I'll add this one. :D Thanks!
No problem man, thanks for the help.
Great Race! Love the added details about alignment based on upbringing. Two of my favorite races smushed together! :)
i have always wondered what whould happen in the rare case of an aasimar and an tiefling having a bit offorbidden love, but that aspect of the lore is not quite properly explained. How would your parents factor into your upbringing? was it an loving relationship between an tiefling who rejected their infernal heritage and an good aasimar, was it an tactical union between an tiefling and an fallen aasimar? perhaps one parent was the victim of assault? you should talk about this aspect of the lore of your race more in the description for the race, since your characters parentage is one of the most important aspects of that character, even more than it is for aasimar or dwarves or even tieflings, encurage people to think about this, about what their character knows about their parents, if they where raised by them, what they where like and how they became a couple is
Also, while certainly mostly in line with what other races are capable of and will in no way break the game, it is still potentially a bit more powerful than an regular subclass. The dungeon masters guide went into detail on how the aasimar variant race was designed, mentioning how they gave it resistance to necrotic damage as well since radiant is not an very common damage type.
after this, they mention that "the aasimars expanded resistance might require limiting this trait to basic utility spells".
in the nephilim, we have an race with an more potent version of the spell casting features of both races, that gets the cantrips of both andhas an slightly higher spell level on the darkness innate spell, but also an more potent version of the resistance feature of both races, as well as an more versatile ability score increase
i'd hardly say it is so overpowered that it would somehow break the game, but i will say that it greatly devalues the existing aasimar and tiefling races by creating something incredebly similar that does everything they do but better, and other players might get yealous, and overall you might need to scale back and tweak the power of this race a little bit, it does not need to have both cantrips, it needs not all the damage resistances. You do not need to make many changes most of this race is fine, but some tweaks to their legacy of mixed blood so that it is equal to the legacy features of the aasimar and the tiefling, not stronger, and make shure that the resistance of mixed heritage gives an apropriate number of resistances.
I would agree that this class is stronger than most official content because of all the options that it allows, plus if all the flavor is removed, it can just be seen as a tiefling 2.0 or an Aasimar 2.0. Was that my intention, no, but I felt letting the player having fun with having the options to choose what part of the heritage is more focused on for their character. Plus, even though that this is a stronger race, halflings, gnomes, vuman, and half-orc can be debated as stronger races in their own right, but resorting to those races as the potentially stronger races isn't saying much.
Now I will say that if I did go back to rebalance this class, I agree that giving both cantrips is a bit much, and only when through with giving both spells simply because they're mostly flavor spells. Now if I really wanted to balance that, I would make it a choice between the two instead. I do have another option for this but it's tied to the resistances.
As for the given resistances, that's a bit tricky because tiefling only gets one with fire because it is the most common damage type only coming behind bludgeoning, piercing and slashing if I remember right. While Aasimar get two lesser common resistances, and mixing the three options is a bit over doing but I still wanted to keep with option of two resistances mostly due to the rule of cool. So if I was going to reblance this part, I'd do it either as the player gets either the tiefling or aasimar resistances. OR they can pick one of the resistances, but they get to keep both cantrips.
As for the lore questions you have, I mostly left it vague so the player can fill in the gaps for their specific campaign or character situation. I have my own thoughts about it, but those would mostly be tied to my groupmate's character's situation more than anything.
Using this race to make a Bard, and thanks to the +2 in charisma. My gal is going to have a freaking charisma of 20! I am so loving this race!
A bit overpowered -- I would nerf it a little in my own games -- but I love it! really takes the tantalizing idea and makes it work.
What part seems over powered? The only thing that I'd say could lead to that assessment is the customization and the additional cantrip vs the tiefling/aasimar scaling.
I love this race and plan to play in my next campaign but I do have a question. Is there anyway or a possibility that you could add a flying mechanic to this race? If not that’s totally fine. I love it has already is but was just thinking about it.
Glad to hear you enjoy it. I know you're not able to make edits to what I've made public directly, but if you wanted to add a fly speed you can manually do so on your character sheet.
If you're asking for how I'd balance that, I'd just play it while ignoring the spellcasting and have the fly speed equal to your walking speed.
How would you add it to the character sheet for the fly ability?
Left click on Speed (default should be walking) -> customize -> add the fly speed (can even add the source if you wanted)
