Homebrew Faun/Satyr Race Details

...a very strange person stepped out from among the trees into the light of the lamp-post. He was only a little taller than Lucy herself and he carried over his head an umbrella, white with snow. From the waist upwards he was like a man, but his legs were shaped like a goat’s (the hair on them was glossy black) and instead of feet he had goat’s hoofs

- C. S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Hailing from the Feywild, Fauns (female) and Satyr (male) are naturally capricious and playful entities. Oftentimes tricksters, Fauns love nothing more than sitting in the sunlight, preparing a harmless trap or trick for an unwary traveller.

Fey Nature

From the waist upwards, Fauns and Satyr may appear to have the body of a human, save for the animal-like horns atop their heads. Below the waist, however, these creatures have the hind legs of goats and rams. These powerful animalistic qualities can give Fauns and Satyr tremendous bursts of speed and strength. Satyr use these displays of strength in fights against one another to determine rank in a tribe or to win the affection of a Faun. Fauns will often perform outstanding displays of acrobatics or rhythm, or for speed in battle.

Pipe and Sword

Fauns and Satyr are most well known for playing the pipes to amuse themselves or charm those who would seek to do them harm, but several tribes have strict honour codes and strong military traditions. Although any Faun may take particular classes, different tribes may have propensity towards certain classes.

All Fauns and Satyr have a number of traits in common with all other Fauns and Satyr

Age

Fauns, due to their unnatural fey nature, often live as long as 200 years but reach maturity at the same rate as humans

Alignment

Fauns and Satyr are typically capricious and chaotic in their nature, delighting in revelry and mirth. Those who fall under the dominion of a particular Fey court, Seelie or Unseelie, will often take the alignment of their court. Those who don’t, tend towards good, but can range from Lawful to Chaotic.

Size

Fanus and Satyr vary in height according to their sub race. Aries tend to be the shortest and stockiest, standing closer to 4 feet tall and weighing around 130lbs. Capra are next, averaging around 4 and a half feet tall and weighing around 120lbs. Cervus are the tallest, standing around 5 feet tall and also weighing around 120lbs; including horns (antlers), male Cervus Satyr can stand almost as tall as humans. Regardless of sub race, your size is Medium

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet

Fey Nature

Musician

Natural musicians, Fauns and Satyr are well known for playing instruments for their own amusement. You gain proficiency in pan pipes, flute or ocarina and may use them as a spellcasting focus should you take an Arcane class. Your DM may allow other musical instruments.

Charming speech

Your natural charm and desire for revelry award you proficiency with Charisma (Persuasion) and Charisma (Performance) skills.

Reveler

The revelling lifestyle of the Satyr mixes with the magic of the Feywild to award Fauns and Satyr protection against the demands of partying and hedonism. You have advantage on saving throws to resist the affects of alcohol and you are capable of celebrating and partying throughout one night without suffering a point of exhaustion; you will not receive the effects of a long rest, however.

Lanuguages

You can speak, read and write Common and Sylvan.

Subrace

When Fauns and Satyr are born, the type of animal from which their legs derive is mostly determined by their parentage. With the Aries and Capra subraces, if two Satyr of the same subrace mate, their offspring will almost exclusively share the same subrace as their parents, if two of different subraces mate, there is an almost half chance that their progeny will follow of either parent. Carvus Fauns and Satyr are incredibly rare and it is said that only one in a generation appear to any combination of parents. If a Carvus mates with Aries or Capra, the likelihood is that their offspring will be either Aries or Capra. Two Carvus Fauns and Satyr may mate, but will produce no offspring.

Aries

Instead of the more commonly recognised goat hind legs, these Fauns and Satyr have the hind quarters of a sheep or ram. Their horns tend to reflect the nature of these animals and are often more prominent and curl around the ears.
