Homebrew Para Genasi Race Details

Para Genasi are much like normal genasi, except their heritage comes either from two major elemental planes. Or when your were born you were exposed to energies from the para elemental planes. They are more rare than normal genasi are are typically identified as such by those who are not well versed in the elemental planes. The para elemental planes are those that were created by two of the major elemental planes touching and mixing. These planes are typically more hospitable to outsiders than the major planes. The plane of Ice resides between the planes of Air and Water, and while harsh there are numerous small settlements. The plane of magma might not seem hospitable, but it is much more so than the planes of Fire or Earth. The plane of Mud (or Ooze to those who go by more ancient names) is not a well respected plane compared to the mighty ocean of the Water plane or the wealth of the Earthen plane. The plane of Smoke is made famous for it's connection to Sigil, but not as famous as the City of Brass in the Fire plane or the floating cities in the plane of Air. The last two para elemental planes do not actually reside in the elemental wheel as they are made from opposing elements. They cross over in demi planes and have more in common with Quasi Genasi that the other Para Genasi do as their planes are closer to the negative or positive planes of energy. The plane of Dust (also commonly known as the plane of Sand) has connections to the planes of Air and Earth. It leans toward the negative energy plane, and so it is known as a plane of decay, rust, and decomposition. On the other hand the plane of Steam leans toward the positive energy plane. With that and the fact the it is connected to the planes of Fire and Water it is teeming with life, but it is shrouded by the steam created and is commonly known as the hidden plane.

Genasi Names

Genasi use the naming conventions of the people among whom they were raised. They might later assume distinctive names to capture their heritage, such as Flame, Ember, Wave, or Onyx.

Subraces

Six subraces of para genasi are found among the worlds of D&D: dust genasi, ice genasi, magma genasi, mud genasi, smoke genasi, and steam genasi. Choose one of these subraces.

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Primordial. Primordial is a guttural language, filled with harsh syllables and hard consonants.

Dust Genasi

In the minds of most, the Para-Elemental Plane of Dust conjures up images of decay, decomposition, and disintegration. The Plane is inimical to both life and to created items, and both will quickly turn to dust without the proper magical protection. Amid all this waste and desolation are the Loreseekers of the Eroding Sands - the Dust genasi. Fascinated by the history of everything: buildings, magical weapons, famous (or infamous) people, regions, towns, you name it; sages and scholars claim this is because the Dust Genasi are raised on a plane where they're surrounded by constant decay. Their curiosity about the life before decay is only natural. On the other hand, some claim that it's the symbolism of accumulated dust, or sands through an hourglass, representing the passage of time that piques their interest. Whatever the reason, most Dust genasi explore the planes researching a particular location, person, or item for the rest of their lives, or dabbling into all manner of subjects.

You feature a colored pattern to your skin reminiscent of sand. Most usually also have a faint dusting of sand on their bodies. Dust Genasi are also sometimes known as Sand Genasi.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 1, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Knowledge of Decay

You are knowledgeable in figuring out how things have happened in the past. While you may not know specific names or events, you know how the course of history tends to go. You are proficient in History.

Unending Breath

You can hold your breath indefinitely while you’re not incapacitated.

Sandslide

You transform your body from flesh and sinew into flowing sand. In this form, you can spill through the smallest gaps.  Once per long rest as an action, you can turn yourself into sand and pass through small holes, narrow openings, and even mere cracks. This lasts for 10 minutes or until you use an action to fully form yourself again. While in this form, you can only move at a speed of 15 feet. You can enter and occupy the space of another creature. You have resistance to nonmagical damage, and you have advantage on Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution saving throws.

While in the form of shifting sand, you can't talk or manipulate objects, and any objects you were carrying or holding can't be dropped, used, or otherwise interacted with. You cannot attack or cast spells.

Once you reach 3rd level, you gain the ability to control sand at a distance. You can cast Dust Devil as a 2nd level spell once per long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Ice Genasi

Unlike most of the Para-Elemental Planes, The Plane of Ice actually has a fair number of humanoid settlements on it. It tends to draw in a certain type of brasher, and it isn't the meek, timid, or sickly. What you will find on the plane is a group of hard- drinking, hard-living rowdies with the fortitude of an ox (and, some say, the smarts to match), and these traits are usually passed on to their plane-touched offspring. The common joke is that Ice genasi must be emotionless since they're so cold-hearted, but the truth is that Ice genasi are among the most passionate of all genasi. They like to live life to the fullest and slurp the marrow from the bone of life. They're boisterous, fun-loving, and always on the lookout for the next party.

In appearance, all Ice Genasi tend towards sharp, angular features. Their skin and hair are either pure white or bluish-white. Additionally, they usually have extremely cold flesh and sometimes have a thin layer of frost in their hair (even during the summer).

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Cold Resistance

You have resistance to cold damage. You are also immune to cold environmental effects.

Surefooted

You can move across any icy surface at your normal movement rate, without any danger of slipping or falling.

Touch of Ice

You know the frostbite cantrip, but you can only cast it at a range of touch. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the ice knife spell once with this trait as a 1st-level spell, and you regain the ability to cast it this way when you finish a long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Magma Genasi

"Slow, but burning with intense energy" is the description often used to describe the Explorers of the Lava. Like their close cousins the Earth Gensai, Magma genasi tend to be ponderous and deliberate in their outward motions. However, this slow, monolithic movement disguises a fiercely active and intelligent mind. As a consequence, the curiosity typical of all Para and Quasi genasi manifests in Magma genasi as a desire to explore, investigate, and truly understand the Multiverse in a scientific way. Lawfully inclined Magma genasi are usually drawn towards the Guvners, but no matter which Faction they belong to, Magma genasi are usually one of their Faction's most profound philosophers due to their constant inquiry into the nature of the Multiverse.

Appearance-wise, Magma genasi tend to be thick and bulky, but more rounded than their Earth genasi counterparts. Their skin is warm, even hot to the touch, and is usually black or dark brown, and laced with streaks of red or bright orange.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Strength score increases by 1.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. Your ties to the Elemental Plane of Fire make your darkvision unusual: everything you see in darkness is in a shade of red.

Fire Resistance

You have resistance to fire damage.

Power of the Volcano

You know the earth tremor spell. You can cast it as a 1st-level spell once per long rest. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the heat metal spell as a 2nd-level spell at a range of touch once with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it this way when you finish a long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Mud Genasi

As one might guess, most Mud genasi (also known as Ooze) have a hard time getting respect from the rest of the Multiverse. While the other Inner Planes have something going for them, from the burning majesty of the Plane of Fire to the immeasurable wealth of the Plane of Earth, there's nothing particularly inspiring about ooze. The Dwellers of the Mud, as they call themselves, get this repeatedly dumped into their heads from the moment they step off their native planes, and while some develop a crushing inferiority complex, others become over-confident overachievers or live their lives trying to hold mud, ooze, muck and so forth up as being just as worthy of respect and admiration as any other element.

The skin of an Mud genasi always has the color of mud, and sometimes even seems to drip, though this is just an optical illusion. They also usually have the faint aroma of moist earth about them.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Acid Resistance

You have resistance to acid damage.

Slippery

All creatures have disadvantage to grapple/restrain you by non-magical means. You have advantage to escape from grapple and restrain effects by non-magical means.

Muddy Magic

You can cast the Grease spell once with this trait as a 1st-level spell with a range of touch, and you regain the ability to cast it this way when you finish a long rest. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the meld into stone spell as a 3rd-level spell once with this trait, and you regain the ability to cast it this way when you finish a long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Smoke Genasi

While Smoke genasi have to go through the usual adjustments that all Para and Quasi genasi experience the first time they leave their native planes, the smoke and the smog in Sigillian air provides Smoke genasi with at least one of the comforts of home. This probably explains why the Smoke genasi are the most numerous of the Para and Quasi genasi on the Planes. It also probably explains why Sigil has the largest concentration of Smoke genasi outside of the Plane of Smoke.

Smoke genasi always have a faint odor of smoke about them, and this odor usually indicates their mood. The pleasant odor of smoked cedar, for instance, may indicate that the Smoke genasi is in a generous mood, while a sharp and acrimoniously smoky odor might indicate anger or jealousy. Smoke genasi usually also have dark gray hair that moves of its own accord like smoke coming off a fire, or mottled gray skin which seems to change coloring and pattern from moment to moment.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.

Disappear in Smoke

Knowing the nature of smoke and distraction you have proficiency in stealth.

Fog Sight

Because of your familiarity with smoke, you can see 60 ft through smoke, fog, mist, or smog.

Smoke in the Air

You can cast the feather fall spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the pyrotechnics spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Steam Genasi

The Inner Planes have collected a variety of nicknames over the millenia, such as the Boundless Blue for the Plane of Air, or the Anvil for the Plane of Earth. The misty expanses of the Plane of Steam tend to make folks think of mystery, secrecy and long-lost darks, and so it's most common nickname is simply The Hidden. The Steam Genasi, or Lanterns of the Mist, seem to embody this hidden quality of their home plane. Like other Genasi, they are ardent explorers of the Multiverse, but they often specialize in investigating the unknown, unearthing lost darks and seeking out forbidden knowledge.

Appearance-wise, Steam Genasi are the most human-looking of all the plane-touched. The only hints that give away their true nature are things like perpetually wet hair or an odor of fog about them. Occasionally one will have perpetually wet skin, but this is rare.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Fog Sight

Because of your familiarity with smoke, you can see 60 ft through smoke, fog, mist, or smog.

Nature of Hidden Things

Due to the nature of your realm, The Hidden, you have become familiar with how things like to hide. You have proficiency in investigation.

Surrounded in Steam

You can cast the fog cloud spell as a 1st-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the water walk spell (on yourself only) once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Constitution is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
