Homebrew Tiefling of Dal Race Details

Humans catch other bloodlines as a crystal in a window might, and tieflings are a perfect example of this. Our heritage may be infernal initially, but I know not a one of us who considers themselves a devil. I may not be able to recognize all my siblings by their horns or tails or hooves, by their eyes or the tones of their skin, but I can always pick them out in a crowd by the way they embrace who they are.

Infernal blood trickling into the human populace is what first brought Tieflings to the material plane, but the adaptability of their human parentage is what truly bore them. Human bloodlines already tend to catalyze whatever is introduced rather than suppressing it, and after countless years of existence, the Tieflings of Dal have honed that capability. You could say that they are the "mutts" of the material plane. Rather than take that as an insult, however, most Tieflings are proud of their unique place among the other beings of Dal.

Infernal Bloodline

Tieflings are derived from human bloodlines, and in the broadest possible sense, they still look human. However, their infernal heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Tieflings have large horns that take any of a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelopes’ horns. Some have thick tails, four to five feet long, which lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their canine teeth can be sharply pointed, and their eyes vary wildly in color, both sclera and iris. Their skin tones and hair colors come in every shade of the rainbow, and then some. Many tieflings even have markings like stripes or spots on their bodies.

Confident and Loud

Tieflings are quick to find comforts in almost any situation. They are exceptional at seeing the silver lining and often serve well as a morale boost when those around them may be struggling. They are often drawn to bright colors and vibrant patterns, sometimes wearing clothing stitched of many different fabrics for the variety it offers. While their variable nature makes them fit for any style of adventuring party, many find their place with the bardic arts, using their own confidence to bolster their companions.

Tiefling Names

Within their own communities, Dallian Tieflings have a fleeting relationship with names. By the time an individual reaches adulthood, they've likely chosen a name other than the one they were given at birth. Some cycle through names regularly, others choose one and hang on to it for the rest of their lives. Names come from many sources, but seem most often to be real world objects as opposed to traditional names among other cultures. Below are some examples, but do not feel bound by any hard rule.

Names: Silk, Clove, Maple, Fig, Rose, Cane, Bee, Suede, Bell, Velvet, Sky.

Tiefling of Dal Traits

Tieflings share few traits amongst themselves, the following are the options you may choose from.

Ability Score Increase

You may choose one ability to increase by 2 and one ability to increase by 1.

Age

Tieflings mature at the same rate as humans but live a few years longer.

Alignment

Tieflings of Dal are not bound by any particular alignment. They trend toward neutral or good alignments but this is not exhaustive.

Skill Versatility

You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice.

Size

Tieflings are about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Variable Resistance

You have resistance to one of the following: fire, cold, acid, lightning, thunder.

Saving Face

Dallian Tieflings are confident, and good at covering their missteps around others to maintain that confidence. If you miss with an attack roll or fail an ability check or a saving throw, you can gain a bonus to the roll equal to the number of allies you can see within 30 feet of you (maximum bonus of +5). Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one language of your choice.

Avarling

Born from a union with tieflings and some of the region's smallfolk, Avarlings are slight, quick on their feet, and often sassy. They have all the same exuberance of their taller brethren but only half the size. They are often slippery, able to squeeze out of any tight spot they find themselves in, and able to dart in and out of a crowded room without ever being noticed.

Nimble Escape

You can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of your turns.

Avarling Footwork

You can move through the space of any creature that is of a size larger than yours.

Size

Avarlings are smaller than the average human. Your size is small.

Great Tiefling

Sometimes some of the region's larger folk take comfort in a tiefling spouse, and Great Tieflings are the result of that. They are broader, bearing horns that seem disproportionate to their heads in size. These extra large horns often aid them in battle, becoming a valuable close-range weapon in the midst of combat.

Powerful Build

You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Hammering Horns

Immediately after you hit a creature with a melee attack as part of the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to attempt to shove that target with your horns. The target must be no more than one size larger than you and within 5 feet of you. Unless it succeeds on a Strength saving throw against a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier, you push it up to 10 feet away from you.
