Homebrew Rivertail Race Details

“No amount of work is too much effort to protect the freedom to play.” - Rivertail Wisdom

Rivertails are among the least populous races in The Valley, but their reputation precedes them in every burrow, nest, and hill. A paradox is at the center of their culture: they are determined, industrious, and bold, but all that passion is ultimately directed toward enabling relaxation, entertainment, and joy. Rarely thinking beyond the moment, Rivertails will work tirelessly to overcome any obstacle...if it's between them and a lazy afternoon.

Rivertails may be nocturnal or diurnal, meaning that their communities always have something going on. Taverns and shops never close, and holiday festivals or family celebrations might last days without stopping. Food, decorations, and other festivities are elaborate and impressive; Rivertails work their hardest in order to ensure that they're playing hard. This drives their ingenuity and craft; they are renowned for being among the most skilled toolmakers in The Valley, but the majority of their creations have almost no practical use outside of entertainment.

For all their love of a good party, Rivertails are also deeply territorial. Feuds and spats between different groups are common. They rarely result in fighting, and what little there is tends to be mostly symbolic posturing. However, it's not uncommon for a Rivertail to have relatively few Rivertail friends outside their home community. Being territorial also makes Rivertails slow to bond but fierce allies once a bond is forged.

Rivertails maintain completely separate social hierarchies for men and women, and most villages have historically maintained separate leadership groups for each gender. In recent generations this duality has been challenged as unhelpful, and younger generations of Rivertails tend to ignore old social systems. Many villages still confer titles on their elders, but it's become almost completely ceremonial. The feasts thrown for the appointment of a new Elder are among the largest and most lavish, so that part of the tradition isn't going anywhere soon.
