Homebrew Aaefling Species Details
Aaeflings are often seen as a strange and unwelcome deviation from the natural order by those around them. Many people, especially other aasimar and tieflings, harbor intense dislike or even hatred towards aaeflings, viewing the combination of their ancestry as reprehensible and the resulting individuals as beyond redemption. Aaeflings may choose to isolate themselves to escape this persecution, but some instead embrace a life of adventure as a way to prove their worth and defy negative expectations. These adventurous aaeflings have the potential to become exceptionally powerful and successful in their endeavors.
While they may be rare, there are different variations of aaeflings that exist. Their environment can play a role in determining the type of aaefling one may become, but some aaeflings are born with a unique connection that shapes their appearance and personality. The extent of aaeflings' diversity is not yet fully understood due to limited knowledge about them. Below are the known and documented types of aaeflings that have been discovered so far
Aaefling Traits
Aaeflings share certain racial traits as a result of their infernal and celestial ancestry.Ability Score Increase
Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.
Age
Given your combined ancestry, your normal lifespan increases twofold. You mature at the same rate as a human, but can live up to 200 years.
Alignment
Some aaeflings lean towards goodness, while others are more prone to chaos and violence. Still, others try not to take a side and balance the scale, preferring to remain neutral.
Size
Aaeflings are about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Flight
Your base flight speed is 20 feet. Due to demonic and celestial powers mixing, aaefling offspring grow wings on their backs. Their wings usually remain small throughout their life however, some have wings no larger than medium size. Aaefling wings vary in shape and color, usually reflecting their personalities or aspirations. Most aaeflings tend to conceal their unique wings as they can be easily distinguished.
Hand of Health
You have an innate ability to heal because of your aasimar ancestry. As an action, you can touch a creature and cause it to regain a number of hit points equal to your level + your proficiency bonus. Any hit points exceeding the target's max are converted into temporary hit points. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.
Hand of Fire
You reserve fire energy equal to your proficiency bonus that you can expend to release some of the hellish energy inside you. When you hit a target with a melee attack, you can expend 1 energy point to deal extra fire damage equal to your proficiency bonus. You can only use 1 energy point per hit. You replenish all fire energy after each long rest.
Darkvision
Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Resistance of Hellish and Celestial Energy
You have resistance to fire and necrotic damage.
Languages
You can speak, read and write Common, choose between Infernal or Celestial, and one other language of your choice.
Emberborn Aaefling
Emberborn aaeflings are a subrace of aaeflings with a strong connection to the elemental plane of fire. They possess a fiery appearance, with their skin often having a reddish or orange hue and their eyes appearing to glow with an inner fire. They possess an inner heat that can be felt by others and are known for their fiery personalities, being passionate, fierce and often impulsive. They are naturally drawn to the heat and the fire, and they feel more at home in a desert or a volcano than in a cold, damp forest. They are often fiercely independent, and they value their freedom above all else. They have a strong sense of adventure and they are always looking for new challenges and experiences. They are also known for their fierce loyalty to their friends and family, and they will go to great lengths to protect those they care about. They possess a strong sense of self-worth and they are determined to prove their worth to others.
Inferno Overload
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your bonus action to release the blazing energy from the Plane of Fire, coating your body in flames (blue or red) thirsting for fuel.
Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. During it, the flames surrounding you emit immense heat causing creatures that start their turn within 10 feet of you to take 1d6 fire damage and once again if they end their turn within 10 feet of you. Also, once on each of your turns, you can deal extra fire damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or a spell. The extra fire damage equals your level.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Fallen Aaefling
Fallen aaeflings are a rare and often misunderstood subrace of aaeflings. They are individuals who have been touched by evil and have struggled to successfully free themselves from its influence. Some may have turned to darkness in response to the cruelty and persecution they have faced, seeking vengeance against those who have wronged them. Others may have actively pursued the power and allure of evil, seeing it as a necessary risk to protect themselves and others from harm. The process of cleansing oneself of evil is a difficult and rare feat, and those who succeed are forever marked by their experiences. Despite freeing themselves from the hold of darkness, fallen aaeflings are left with a shadow within them, a reminder of their past. Despite their troubled history, fallen aaeflings are not inherently evil and may go on to lead virtuous lives, using their experiences to help others who may be tempted by darkness.
Necrotic Shroud
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your bonus action to unleash the divine energy within yourself, causing your eyes to turn into pools of darkness and two skeletal, ghostly, flightless wings to sprout from your back. The instant you transform, other creatures within 20 feet of you that can see you must each succeed on a Charisma saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or become frightened of you until the end of your next turn.
Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. During it, once on each of your turns, you can deal extra necrotic damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or a spell. The extra necrotic damage equals your level.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Protector Aaefling
Protector aaeflings are a noble and honorable subrace of aaeflings who are blessed by the powers of good to guard the innocent and strike at evil. From a young age, they hear the call of their celestial patrons, urging them to take up arms against the forces of darkness. They are driven by a strong sense of duty and a desire to defend the weak and helpless. They often pursue careers as paladins or clerics, using their divine powers to smite evil and protect the innocent. Despite the persecution they may face because of their aaefling heritage, they do not let that deter them from their sacred duty to defend others. They use their sense of good and evil to be able to detect evil intent and to discern the intentions of creatures around them. Protector aaeflings are respected and admired by many for their courage, selflessness, and devotion to a higher cause.
Radiant Wings
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your bonus action to unleash the divine energy within yourself, causing your eyes to glimmer and two luminous, incorporeal wings to sprout from your back.
Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. During it, you have a flying speed of 40 feet, and once on each of your turns, you can deal extra radiant damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or a spell. The extra radiant damage equals your level. Creatures you choose within 5 feet of you gain a bonus to their AC equal to your proficiency bonus due to a radiant aura bestowed upon them.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Scourge Aaefling
Scourge aaeflings are a fierce and powerful subrace of aaeflings, imbued with divine energy that burns fiercely within them. This energy fuels a powerful desire to destroy, a desire that is at its best, unflinching and, at its worst, all-consuming. Many scourge aaefling wear masks to block out the world and focus on containing this power, unmasking themselves only in battle. These masks have become a defining feature of scourge aaeflings and they wear it with pride. Despite their fearsome reputation, Scourge Aaeflings are not necessarily evil and can use their abilities to fight for a just cause. They are often seen as unflinching warriors, who will fight to the death to protect their loved ones and their home. They are respected for their power and courage but also feared for the intensity of their divine fury.
Radiant Consumption
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your bonus action to unleash the divine energy within yourself, causing a searing light to radiate from you, pour out of your eyes and mouth, and threaten to char you.
Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. During it, you shed bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet, and at the end of each of your turns, each creature within 10 feet of you takes radiant damage equal to your proficiency bonus. In addition, once on each of your turns, you can deal extra radiant damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or a spell. The extra radiant damage equals your level.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Starborn Aaefling
The starborn aaefling are a subrace of aaeflings with a strong connection to the celestial realm. They possess a natural radiance, both physically and spiritually. Their celestial heritage is evident in their appearance, with a halo of light above their heads and a radiant aura surrounding them. Starborn aaeflings are known for their peaceful and serene personalities, often drawn to lives of contemplation and spiritual pursuits. They possess a strong sense of morality, and often strive to live in accordance with the principles of good and purity. They are compassionate, kind, and always willing to help those in need. Despite the persecution they may face because of their aaefling heritage, starborn aaeflings do not let that deter them from their goals. They possess a strong sense of self-worth and are determined to prove their worth to those around them. They are confident in their abilities and their connection to the celestial realm gives them a sense of inner peace and tranquility. They are often seen as shining examples of what is good and just, and they inspire others to strive for the same ideals.
Starlight Aura
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your bonus action to release celestial energy in the form of starlight, causing your body to glow and emit an aura around yourself. The instant you transform, creatures you choose within 20 feet of you that can see you must each succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or become blinded until the end of your next turn.
Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. During it, you cast an aura within 5 feet of you that cause creatures inside to glow and gain +1 to all attack rolls they make while inside your aura. Also, once on each of your turns, you can deal extra radiant damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or a spell. The extra radiant damage equals your level.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Stormborn Aaeflings
Stormborn aaeflings are a subrace of aaeflings with a strong connection to the elemental plane of air. They possess a dynamic, electric appearance, with hair that seems to crackle with static and eyes that seem to flash like lightning. They are known for their energetic and charismatic personalities, and they are often drawn to open spaces and high places. They possess a natural affinity for the air and are often seen as free-spirited and adventurous. Stormborn aaeflings are always looking for new experiences and challenges, and they are not afraid to take risks. They have a strong sense of self-expression and they enjoy the attention of others. They have a strong sense of pride and self-worth and are determined to prove their worth to others. They do not like to be constrained by rules or expectations and they value their freedom above all else.
Tempest Wings
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your bonus action to unleash the energy from the Plane of Air, causing a pair of wings made of violent winds to form on your back. The instant you transform, other creatures within 15 feet of you must each succeed on a Strength saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier) or be pushed back up to 10 feet away from you. If a creature collides with another creature, object, or terrain they take 1d6 bludgeoning damage.
Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. During it, you have a flying speed of 40 feet and all ranged attacks against you are made with disadvantage due to the violent winds created by your wings. Also, once on each of your turns, you can deal extra lightning damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or a spell. The extra lightning damage equals your level.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
