Homebrew Vironi Species Details

Bipedal aquatic creatures covered in fish scales and Bioluminescence patterns, easily recognised by the twin antennae like lures on their heads. A feature that remains from some of their earliest days as a species, when these lures helped them hunt fish that were faster than them before they had developed effective underwater weaponry. Now they remain as mostly decorative.

The Vironi are very community-driven people, even if it may not seem like it at a glance. They do not commonly live in towns or villages, instead preferring to continue to move around in a general area or looping route. Only remaining in an area for up to a month at most before moving on. It is almost unheard of to find lone Vironien wandering around, as they will always travel in a group. These travelling groups consist usually of one really big family or a couple of smaller families sticking close together. Vironien families are usually quite large, and many generations of them will all remain together. It's not unusual for a Vironien to have up to 10 siblings, and about half of them will usually stay with their family group.

To a Vironien adventurer, their party is their traveling group now. They will often begin viewing them like family, and treating them like it too.

A Vironien has an average life expectancy of about 150 years. At the age of 25 young Vironi are considered old enough to leave their family group, and are considered fully adults at 40. By 130 they are considered elders, and will no longer leave their family group.

Being a heavily nomadic species means there is not much in the way of civilisation or law. Vironi will do whatever they feel is generally good and most will have a personal standard for what that means. Even without a species wide recognised "correct" way to act most Vironi will more or less agree on what it would be, with slight differences from person to person of course.

Vironi Traits

Your deep sea origins as a Vironien leaves you still with many of the traits suited to thrive in such a setting, even despite upwards migration.

Darkvision

Made for life down beneath the waves where its harder for light to reach, they are well adjusted to the varying levels of light that it provides.

Gills

Your gills allow you unlimited breath beneath the waves, at the cost of being able to remain above them.

Bioluminescent

Life deep underwater led the Vironi to develop Bioluminescence to be able to more easily identify one of their own from a distance, by seeing the familiar patterns of light.

Not made for land

In water the weight of gravity is lessened, and you are completely submerged in a substance and can therefore move freely in any direction you wish. On land, you have to balance yourself upright and move with only your legs. Things don't float like they do in water. Being underwater creatures, Vironi are not used to this and will struggle with the disadvantages these differences causes them.

Ability score increase

Vironi have shed their deep sea strength in exchange for speed and agility.

Languages

Aquan is a dialect of primordial same as Auran, Ignan, and Terran. Each for a specific element, they are all variants of Primordial.

Vironien language has drifted from plain Primordial into speaking the Aquan variant, along side learning common now that they interact with a wider range of species. Including, though quite rare, those who live on land.

Depths Vironi

The older variant of Vironi, the ones who never left the deep. They are stronger to account for higher water pressure but lack the adaptations for life where the light reaches.

They have considerably smaller families and will not group up with others, but moving freely instead of on a set route means it's rather common to run into others.

Light sensitivity

Accustomed to darkness, bright light is harder to bear. Depths dwellers will struggle to see properly in anything more than dim light, and be blind in bright light.

Alternative sight

A limited amount of times per long rest, you can activate blind sight for 1 hour. This allows you to perceive your surroundings within a 60ft radius without the use of your eyes, such as through sound or water vibrations.

Ability score increase

Used to extreme water pressure, Depths dwellers are stronger than an average Vironien. Though not quite as Agile.

Languages

Depths Vironi had no need to learn common due to the rarity of encountering a species that would speak it. They speak Primordial, same as the huge and ancient creatures that live in the deep. They also speak Aquan specificaly for ease of communication with other sentient species, or even just among their own.
