Homebrew "Hell's touched" Mind flayer WIP Species Details
A Mind flayer is often regarded as a rare encounter in Faerûn, A being rightly seen as alien...but a Hell's touched Mind flayer is so rare it may as well be a 1 in a billion encounter. simply put the processes of cataphoresis is well studied and mundane knowledge to your average wizard. the story usually goes; a Mind flayer tadpole is inserted into a host, it grows and consumes the brain matter of said host, and after a relatively short period, a Mind flayer is born.
Not so for a "Hell's touched" Mind flayer though, as the process of creating one is quite difficult. First you must get a devil or arch-devil infected with the tadpole, then the devil must ALLOW the creature to feed upon it, and only then can a "Hell's touched" Mind flayer be born. Despite their strong hosts, they are almost always extremely frail both in strength and dexterity, as such they cannot walk for more than 10 feet, but almost entirely rely on their levitation for locomotion.
These extremely rare creatures are quite peculiar looking with very unique features (Mind Flayer's normal look not withstanding) such as:
- Horns
- Multi-colored skin similar to Tieflings
- spikey more angular bodies
- a devils tail (optional)
- are often seen floating about a foot or two above the ground (this is just a walking speed, they cannot fly or hover, and can be knocked prone)
They have access to the following traits:
Illithid Sight
you Have dark vision with a range of 60ft
Devil's in the Details
Due to their hellish nature they are resistant to fire damage and Your innate psychic defenses grant you advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the charmed and frightened conditions on yourself.
Mind Flayer's Psionics
You know the Mind Sliver cantrip.
Starting at 3rd level, you can cast the levitate spell with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can also cast the detect thoughts spell with it. Once you cast levitate or detect thoughts with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast either of those spells using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race). None of these spells require spell components when you cast them with this trait.
Brain Extraction
Starting at 3rd level, you can consume the brains of a deceased creature, when doing so you gain the benefits of a speak with dead spell as if you're recalling these memories with this trait. Once you use this trait, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest.
Mind Blast
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an blast of psionic energy in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a Intelligence saving throw (DC = 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the creature takes 1d10 psychic damage. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d10 when you reach 5th level (2d10), 11th level (3d10), and 17th level (4d10).
You can use your Mind Blast a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
