Homebrew Aeormaton Species Details

In the time of Aeor, "Aeormatons" were created as artificial helpers for specific roles within society. As such, they tend to have a wide variety of skills and talents, though there are some limitations - each Aeormaton has a base model type that indicates where their strengths lie. While the first aeormatons were mindless creations, the skilled mages of Aeor devoted vast resources to improving the capabilities of this budding race of creatures. An unexpected breakthrough produced sapient servants, giving rise to an age-old question - do Aeormatons have souls?

There are no "new" Aeormatons. Each of them was created before the fall of Aeor, indicating that each of them is at least a thousand years old. However, they have been dormant since the fall and do not know anything about the time that has passed since that time. Every current Aeormaton has either been awakened by Devexian intentionally or via one of the processes he has activated in his goal of awakening dormant Aeormatons. As such, they may or may not have a memory of this awakening, as Devexian has often just left awakened Aeormatons where someone can find them and help.

Living Constuct

Aeormatons are made from metal, though there are additional features such as stone or flexible materials to allow for sturdiness and range of movement. At the heart of every Aeormaton is a crystalline core, embued with arcane energy. Their sapience is unsurprising in that they even function like other living beings - they can feel pain, have emotions, and even bleed (their 'blood' is a mechanical substance that can even be manipulated like blood, allowing classes like Blood Hunter). Built as servants and lost to time, they must now find their way in this world they do not know.

Mechanical Personality

Aeormatons were built to serve, though service is a very general term. For their entire existence before the fall, Aeormatons had a clearly defined function and were encouraged to focus purely on that role. After the breakthrough of sapience, many Aeormatons worked and fought for recognition as equals and were eventually even recognized as citizens. For many, this largely just meant that they could get paid for the labor they were happy to continue doing.

Awakened Aeormatons show wide ranges of emotion. This is often even reflected in their eye color, which seemingly tends to act like a mood ring. Many still embrace a concrete purpose — such as protecting allies, completing a contract, or exploring a land — and embrace this task as their Purpose. However, there are still those who delight in exploring their feelings, their freedom, and their relationships with others. Most aeormatons have no interest in religion, but some embrace faith and mysticism, seeking higher purpose and deeper meaning.

The typical Aeormaton has a sexless body shape. Some ignore the concept of gender entirely, while others adopt a gender identity.

The more an Aeormaton develops its individuality, the more likely it is to modify its body, seeking out an artificer to customize the look of its face, limbs, and plating. Most already have different types of filigree, etching, runes, or other markings to either help identify them or show their allegiance.

Aeormaton Names

All Aeormatons were given designations when they were created, but very few, if any, continue using that as an identifier. Along with citizenship, they began to take on new names of their choice, This could be a word they liked, or related to something they enjoyed, or even a nickname they'd picked up from others. In other cases, some Aeormatons simply can't remember what they used to be called and have picked new names upon their reawakening.
