Homebrew Abella Species Details

the Abella lived long ago, before the sky had fallen in, when the world was still round. in their original world they were little but sentient insects. they were plagued by a species of wasp that nearly bullied them into extinction. when the sky fell in however, along with near all other species save for dragons they were wiped out entirely. it wouldn't be for 10s of millennia before they would make their return to a much stranger world. their resurrection came about by accident, or at least their discovery did. while mining deep under the petrified wood miners came upon a huge mass of amber, as they dug it out they came to realize that within was a perfectly preserved insect specimen inside. eventually the amber was taken to be identified and after much negotiation the church of IO took it into their protection. while under their roof one of the high priests used diamond dust and his mighty magics to cast a true resurrection spell on the creature in wild hopes that its soul would be willing to return to its body. as luck would happen the soul returned, and in a stroke of even greater luck the Abella saved was a queen bee, and she was still able to reproduce with the reproductive material preserved within her.

Before the return of the Abella the forest they now reside in was known as the petrified woods, in the 100 years since their return the forest has gone under a transformation and thusly has been renamed. where once grey trees that looked long dead stood sickly, those same trees stood sprouting beautiful yellow and purple flowers and fragrant fruits. at the very center of this forest is their home, made from a tree many hundreds of feet high. inside is their hive, the travelers willing to visit note that the city smells wonderful but you have to get used to everything being sticky. the main export they have is the honey they make from the flowers of the forest.

the Abellas culture is not terribly dissimilar to their smaller counterparts. a queen bee is the leader, royals fight for power and the right to replace her when she passes, workers gather and create the honey they sell, and drones aim to give the queen their genetic material to reproduce. the main difference is that they are somewhat democratic, the queen does not rule with unquestionable force but she does rule. genetically drones, workers, and royals vary a bit. royals are much larger, have larger more formed wings and are nearly only female, very rarely a male is born to the royals, they are generally deemed the only mate the queen is to have from then on. the drones do not have a stingers but are faster and more silver tongued than most of their species. finally workers are the most versatile of the abella, their jobs are generally determined by their strengths and weakness

a generally friendly kind but hard working species the Abella have made fast friends with dwarves and gnomes, and wood elves have come from far to see what they see as a magical species.
