Up to three creatures of your choice that you can see within range must make Charisma saving throws. Whenever a target that fails this saving throw makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target must roll a d4 and subtract the number rolled from the attack roll or saving throw.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st.

I'd say yes if he has seen or heard the caster compose and direct the spell, but otherwise no (re; divine soul sorcerer - metamagic, situational/environmental factors too) . I should also mention that the Bane spell is not a curse, but an enchantment. You could use dispel magic to remove the effect of bane on one character, but not the remove curse spell.

5E is all about the wording of things, so words matter here. I would agree that the "intent" of the phrasing for "Critical Hit" would state that a natural 20 roll is an automatic hit, while a natural 1 roll, is an automatic miss. That's why I was surprised when my players broke out a "bless" spell and pointed out the phrasing of the duration: as long as the caster doesn't fail a concentration check, the effects last the entire minute. "Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw" (PHB, p 219). Thankfully, we only agreed it worked on one attack roll per round. Theoretically, every attack or saving throw made within that time period, if under the effects, allows the PC a heck of a bonus. That is following the word. I think there is a reference somewhere else in the PHB or DMG that says that only applies to one or the other, one time, a round. So if two attacks, only one attack gets the bonus. That is the intent.
Back to this. So, following the wording of the spell, since a natural 20 is a dice roll, then reducing that roll by a d4 applies. If this is the case, then a 1st level spell is so OP its ridiculous! But, that would be what it says. However, the intent would be a natural 20 roll should negate any other modifiers for hitting, since its an automatic hit. Likely, the intent is what most DMs will go with. Would be interested to hear the developers thoughts.
ClaytonLuke: Interesting ponder but doesn't really fit in this thread.
No it works on all of them. Each attack is “an attack”. If it meant only one, it would say “your next” or “your first” or “one attack”.
Yes, Bless and Bane are powerful. House rule your game however you want though, as long as it works for you and everyone is having fun. That’s all that matters.

No. Your DM is wrong.
Question peeps ,is a death save a saving throw? And would bane effect its rolls?
Remember the d4.
Yes, a death save is affected by anything that affects all saves, like Bane, Bless, a Paladin's aura of protection, or even an Exhaustion level of 3+.
The worst thing about this spell is the complete lack of actually describing what it does. Usually, spells have fluff descriptions that can be used by DMs to invoke certain sensations and feelings, especially with spells that have no visual or auditory effects.
In contrast, look how the 3.5 version of Bane's description reads:
See that brilliant structure? {Fluff description}, and then {mechanical description}. Why Wizards of the Coast didn't do that with this spell is entirely beyond me, and I don't fault new DMs for not knowing entirely how to describe PCs being affected by this spell, thanks to this very awful description.
Bless is superior since it doesn't require a saving throw. Enemies do have a lot of save attacks above level 3, that part is just false.
What sort of enemies you'll encounter are dependent on your DM and the sort of game you're playing. At 3rd level, goblins and bandits are commonly used and have no innate abilities to force saves, while many beasts can attempt to knock you prone or poison you via saves.
In addition, not all party members fight with attack rolls. Many spellcasters I've played forced saves with practically no effective ways to directly attack, essentially wasting what some would call the better half of bless.
