Teleportation
You and up to five willing creatures within 5 feet of you instantly teleport to a previously designated sanctuary. You and any creatures that teleport with you appear in the nearest unoccupied space to the spot you designated when you prepared your sanctuary (see below). If you cast this spell without first preparing a sanctuary, the spell has no effect.
You must designate a sanctuary by casting this spell within a location, such as a temple, dedicated to or strongly linked to your deity. If you attempt to cast the spell in this manner in an area that isn't dedicated to your deity, the spell has no effect.
Is it safe to presume that this spell can't allow entry into a place that has Forbiddance cast on it?
Nice play!
...So what happens if a Bard takes this as a Magical Secret?
Does the "strongly linked to your deity" bit hold?
Can the Bard designate a brothel?
...
I know what my next character is gonna be doing.
If I remember correctly, an unconscious/dead creature is considered an object for all matters rule-wise.
I've suggested to the party that to make a specific place dedicated to a specific god would cost 5000 gold total, of which 1000 gold would be casting the spell Hallow in the area. The other 4000 is collecting and or creating items, idols and offerings to a specific god. They can afford this but it is a toss up, spend coin on this or spend it on a magic item.
To clarify they have 3 different temples in the city devoted to their god (Torm specifically). Each temple is open to hosting someone who can cast 6th level divine spells they see someone like that as proof of the miracles that Torm has gifted his faithful. People of Righteousness, Justice and Temperance are blessed by his hand and should be praised so that others can rise to the example they provide.
Ironically the cleric is against full organized religion and doesn't want to work with the temples, they want a small private sanctuary. Is this too expensive?
Definitely not. An unconscious creature is "a creature", not "an object" - you don't do double damage against them with spells or effects that deal double damage to objects, and you can target them with spells that target creatures (like cure wounds)
A dead body is an object.
Who's here from critical role
Personal opinion and possible hot take, replace words and see if that changes intent. There is nothing inherently in the spell that demands there be only one sanctuary.
You and up to five willing creatures within 5 feet of you instantly teleport to a previously "Painted House". (designated sanctuary) You and any creatures that teleport with you appear in the nearest unoccupied space to the spot you designated when you "Painted the House" (prepared your sanctuary) If you cast this spell without first "Painting a House" (preparing a sanctuary), the spell has no effect.
You must "Paint a House" (designate a sanctuary) by casting this spell within a location "that lines up with your licence permit"(, such as a temple, dedicated to or strongly linked to your deity.) If you attempt to cast the spell in this manner in an area that isn't "On your licence permit" (dedicated to your deity), the spell has no effect.
Again goofy but a thought experiment, preparing a sanctuary doesn't inherently by itself mean you can only prepare one. If I prepare a salad is that the only salad I will ever be allowed to eat? Very easy to control by the DM anyway, You decided what is and isn't strongly linked to a Deity or not. That even opens up the possibility for more rp and questing. Say for example the cleric tries to mark a sanctuary but it doesn't work. All of a sudden I bet the cleric wants to know why a temple built for her god isn't considered strongly linked. Imagine if a temple of Torm or Tyr was embroiled in a scandal where a corrupt official was abusing the law. The temple had been tainted by lies and deceptions and fallen into poor favour with their god.
How long would this spell last for? Indefinitely? One and Done?
My party is on a smash and grab mission and have this spell at their disposal. The spell allows for transporting of objects, but what if possession of the object is contested? Imagine PC and evil guy both grappling for it... Can the PC just touch the object and bamf away with it?
My understanding is cast once to designate the sanctuary. Any future casting can take you to that spot any time until you cancel it.
I believe this spell would act like any other teleportation spell when it comes to Forbiddance
What if the sanctuary / temple is destroyed while you're away? Would you still be transported to the area where it existed when you first cast the spell regardless, or would the transport fail?
Styromus, Ask your DM to be sure, but my thought is that even if the place loses its strong link to your deity, it was still a valid location when set up. This gives a fun story hook of the party GTFOing and discovering that the cleric’s temple had been destroyed since the last time they were there.
"I hereby and heretofore in perpetuity permit implied willingness regardless of my current state of indisposal; Recall consent to <PartyClericName>." :D

Bob the barbarian
Now the DM must prove you are 'unwilling.' In theory you could try this to scrape off a possessor. Open to interpretation though.
I think like IRL unconscious, it means you are unable to consent and therefore you should assume "NO" lol
Does a "sanctuary" made by using the Hallow spell count?
Is this just warping to the area of the Sanctuary spell or is it something else?
So, as I understand it you have to do two steps;
1) Prepare a designated santcuary by casting this spell in an appropriate (and I presume agreed by the DM) 'sanctuary' to establish the point of return for the recall
2) Any time thereafter, cast this spell in the field to then return to the point of recall in the designated sanctuary
Correct?
That is how I understand it and have also asked today to confirm (further below)
