AI Dungeon Masters

If you're like me and have a ton of adventures you've bought but haven't actually been able to play (Not just from Beyond, but from anywhere you can get adventures, homebrew, official, or otherwise), I found that if you pass a PDF of the entire adventure into a LLM like ChatGPT and ask it to DM the adventure for you, it will; surprisingly well. I'm part way through a couple now, and having a lot of fun with them.

It feels like a great way to play through adventures you otherwise wouldn't have the time for, or for new players to get a better taste for D&D and get into the game more. I'm wondering now how such a feature could be implemented into Beyond, to play adventures you've purchased directly on the site, associated with your character sheet and everything. Could be a really cool feature, and an actual positive use case for AI.

I'd rather trip face-first into a bucket of d4s than let AI tools anywhere near D&D.

ChatGPT and similar tools are not capable of actually understanding the rules of D&D (or anything, really) so this kind of thing is a particularly poor use case for them.

 AGREE 1000%. Beyond the myriad of reasons that AI has no place in creative spaces, there are so many nuances in D&D that ChatGPT/other AI tools are just not able to replicate. D&D is a social game, a creative game, meant to be collaborative storytelling between a group of people, and replacing any part of that experience with AI takes away from everything that makes D&D what it is.

No. A million times no. I would rather get eye surgery from Volo. If any official generative AI integration is ever announced for D&D Beyond I will immediately cancel my subscription. 

Feeding full text into an AI, unless it's a fully owned one of yours that services no-one else (unlikely but would probably fall under fair use in that case), does in fact violate TOS.

I'd rather D&D do a universes beyond with Peppa Pig than Wizards of the Coast as an AI slop machine wearing the still dripping skin of a dungeon master. I cannot convey how much I do not want this. I'd rather dance barefoot on my d4s.

Edit: other things I'd rather experience than AI in D&D

• Snort wasabi
• Squirt lemon juice in my eyes
• Write a Naruto X Yu Gi Oh X John Wick X World War 2 D&D campaign
• Transcribe the entire SRD in crayon using my left foot
• Spend a day debating rules optimizers
• Permanently house rule that a nat 20 lets the player do anything they want
• Burn all my D&D books
• Eat meat
• Sleep on a bed of beard shavings
• Forever play D&D purely as an "adjudicator" and strictly to RAW with no house rules or DM screen

The list could go on...

I found this can of worms lying around; does this belong to anybody?

I'm going out on a generous limb and assuming the OP isn't aware that, what seems like a good idea in theory, in actuality is not healthy for the hobby.

 Oh, that's a good one! I'd rather eat a can of worms with a rusty spoon than have AI in D&D!

I ain't letting no clankers near D&D unless it's a warforged. I'd rather draw 10 cards from The Deck of Many Things in real life than do that.

I'd rather skewer myself in the junk with rusty freshly used Burger King grill tongs then can-can naked in Saudi Arabia in front of the royal family than have AI DMs be a thing.

AI DMs... I'd rather go broke playing Pokemon and gacha games and the  get into bankruptcy going I to warhammer if it means none of my money goes to AI "DMs."

They should really never be a thing. Ever

I'm really pleased to see so much of this community aligned on this.

Maybe something like a Lit RPG would be a better fit for someone desperate enough for an adventure to consider letting AI get its nasty metal paws on one's game. It supports an actual creator, is similar to d&d, and it's not actually illegal. There are also supplements designed for Solo Adventuring. Whenever someone suggests using AI, there are already alternatives available that they usually don't even know about. At least, that's what I assume with good faith.

Look I’m already a very lonely man, I don’t need to start roleplaying to a computer by myself. That wont ever go well, trust me, I was addicted to Character AI before.

I'm not an anti-AI person in general but even I would absolutely detest the idea of bringing an AI DM to D&D Beyond. I have no interest in an AI DM. It won't understand rules, it will not understand what players need, it will not understand nuance of roleplay or creativity - it just fails across the board. That's without factoring all the environmental, social, ethical and economic factors surrounding LLM and Generative AI. 

Huge servings of 'not a fluffing chance' from me.
