Welcome to the Worlds of Pphost Alpha v0.1. It's currently just one world (Haven) but everything is in place to begin adding more.
Pphost (okay, post actually) is a persistent setting where Player Characters (PCs) can spend downtime between short or one-shot Adventures, run by any of a number of Pphost Dungeon Masters (DMs). Pphost has been developing as a way to address some serious problems with Play by Post (PbP). The biggest is that campaigns fall apart long before they can possibly finish (or sometimes, even really get started). First it's one PC that disappears, then another. Maybe you start to wonder why you're trying so hard when nobody else is. Next thing you know it's gone. Short Adventures are an obvious solution but they don't give much opportunity for character development unless PCs are going from levels 1 through 20 in a matter of months. An Adventure in Pphost can take place in as little as two weeks real time, corresponding to two days of game time. Everybody knows roughly how long the Adventure will run and they are encouraged to make a strong finish at the end. For every 2 days of game time, a PC earns 12 days of downtime, equaling 14 days total. I don't know if there is a need for a correspondence between real-time and game time. Consider it a happy coincidence for now. Advancement is tracked from Adventure to Adventure. The coin, treasure and Magic items a PC finds on an Adventure, is theirs to keep. PCs can buy or build establishments like taverns or magic shops. They can build castles, monasteries or wizards towers. They can make these worlds their own.
DMs can use these settings to launch their Adventures. An Adventure can take place in the wilderness demiplane of Haven, or in the small settlement by the same name. There are rumors of the discovery of an abandoned Dwarven mine and stories of a forest where Magic runs amok. There are caves that lead to the Underdark. There are planer rifts in Haven that let a DM set their Adventure on any world they choose.
A DM might stake out their own portion of Haven, to develop as they see fit and to launch their Adventures from and provide whatever downtime opportunities they wish. They might even create their own world, connecting it to Haven and to worlds beyond.
More than just a setting, Pphost can be a conversation about what works and what doesn’t for Play by Post.
Worlds of Pphost had been inspired heavily by D&D Adventure's League, but is not intended as a PbP version of AL. Live games, either in person or online have problems and possibilities that are very different than those of PbP, so the solutions are going to be different. Things like 13.25 point average Ability scores and ASI at first level might seem at first glance like giving candy to young children (and yes, there is an element of that) but maintaining interest in a live game with a group of people who can talk to each other is very different from when someone who is just answering text messages day after day. Likewise, the desperate need for Adventurers League to limit magic items to keep them from breaking the game is less of an issue where PCs have so much more to spend gold on than Magic items, the DM has so much more time to think, has a pool of other DMs to draw ideas from and just generally has more room to sandbox.
Also, and this is a HUGE also, we are in no way associated with DnD Beyond or their parent company Wizards of the Coast aside from just being a bunch of subscribers having fun while Adventurers League is official D&D league play.
Also much of the Consent portions of the Character Profile were inspired by Consent in Gaming from Monte Cook Games, LLC and availible through Dungeon Masters Guild (www.dmsguild.com). Consent in Gaming is an important work and I believe (unsolicited, unpaid enforcement) belongs in every DM/GMs toolkit.
To create a Characters Profile for the Worlds of Pphost Players agree to the following:
Follow all the rules you've already agreed to with D&D Beyond
Treat everyone here, DMs, players, moderators or observers with respect.
Any Player Character (PC) that can be created with the current Pphost Character Creation Rules should be acceptable for any Adventure run here.
Posted Session 0s are not just to advertise a DM recruiting for an Adventure, they are there to open a dialogue between you and the DM about what kind of game the players and the DM are looking for.
Once in an Adventure, Players are encouraged to post at least once a day. If a player won't be able to post for longer than 24 hours, they should try to work out something acceptable with the DM. If after 24 hours without a post or word, then, if in combat they take the dodge action, or out of combat they pass.
After 48 hours with no post or word, they can be controlled by the DM or an agent (another player that the first player trusts and designates in advance).
After 1 week the DM (or at the DM's discretion, the agent) can continue to play that PC or remove them from the game.
DMs can create and run Adventures that modify the above rule as long as the changes are listed in the Session 0.
Avoid sharing or trading coins, goods, Magic items and anything else between your own PCs.
Players are limited to three Tier 1 PCs and no more than 12 PCs total.
PbP is very different from live gaming, either in person or online. Consider using the suggestions in Best Practices for Players and if there is something you find really helpful, consider submitting it for addition to the list.
No-one should ever be misrepresented here, in text or in any response to ratings systems that may eventually be set up here. The results should always be fair and objective. Anyone attempting to skew the results of those rating systems, in any direction will not be allowed to continue to use the Worlds of Pphost.
Work with everyone else here to make the Worlds of Pphost even better, in small ways or large, whatever you're comfortable with. Currently we're just getting our bearings. Big changes are ahead.
By clicking here you are agreeing to the above rules. This will take you to the Pphost Character Profile creation page.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Your first step towards joining one of the Adventures in the Worlds of Pphost is to create your Character's Profile page.
For Raw Scores you have 3 choices, Die Rolls, PbP Standard Array and PbP Point Buy.
For Die Rolls, copy the following, between the quotes, but not including them. Paste it into the top of a Reply to this Topic, at the bottom of this page, so that there is no space above it.
Then, if you are taking your ASI as increases add to the end of text so far either:
"ASI: ***[2]"
and substitute the 3 letter abbreviation used in "Ability Scores" for the asterisks if you are taking both points for one score, or use: "ASI: ***[1] ***[1]"
if you are putting one point to two scores.
If instead, you are taking a 1st level Feat, put the name of that Feat (prerequisites if any are listed after each Feat), copy and paste from the list of 1st level Feats at the bottom of this message, on that line instead of an ASI. If you are using die rolls, remove the 6 spaces between the "/" and "roll" in each of the 6 [/roll] block in the die roll section, then Post it the message (you can still edit it later, just don't edit the die roll section or you may invalidate your PC).
Go to D&D Beyond's Character Creation Method and create your PC. Any official Race, Class, Subclass or Background are acceptable. For nonstandard Backgrounds use the rules in the Players Handbook on page 125. At "3. ABILITIES" use Manual/Rolled option and fill in your raw scores to the abilities you choose. If you are taking the ASI, add the points to "Other Modifier". If you are taking a 1st level Feat, then once the character sheet is finished look for "FEATURES & TRAITs", then "FEATS" and use "Manage Feats" to add it.
Click on the Gear icon by your character's name, which will open up the side panel. Scroll down till you see "Shareable Link" and click on it. Copy the link and Paste it as the next line of your Character Profile. Then add the following, very long section between the two quotes (look carefully for the second one, it's a ways down. Adventure types and Consent must be included) :
Fill in all the blanks. For consent there is no right or wrong answers. There is no judgement here. The intent is to match you up with players and DMs you’ll have the most fun with. Any GYR left blank will be assumed "Y". Then save your changes. Your profile page is now finished. To submit it, copy the URL of your character sheet (not the shareable link), the copy of your profile page (right click on the number on the right side of the black bar above the entry) and the name of the PC. Click the link below, add them to the form and hit “Submit”. You will be sent a link to the Worlds of Pphost.
It is hoped that this part of the process will become more streamlined, but this is where we start.
Anything below the dashed line is yours to use as you please. It can be a character diary, notes about your character, just left blank or whatever you want. If you include images, put them behind a "spoiler" tag.
Remember, your character will continue in Haven and in the Worlds beyond it, from one adventure to another. Things your character does, buys, builds or creates continues as well. Have fun!

To run Adventures in the Worlds of Pphost DMs agree to the following:
Follow all the rules you've already agreed to with D&D Beyond
Treat everyone here, DMs, players, moderators or observers with respect.
Any Player Character (PC) that can be created with the current Pphost Character Creation Rules should be acceptable for any Adventure run here.
No DMPCs. If you have PCs you've created for Pphost you cannot play them in the Adventures you run. Try to avoid girlfriend PCs, boyfriend PCs, etc (unless you're introducing (corrupting) a loved one who's new to the game, then just proceed with caution).
Try, if at all reasonable, to give the PCs of other Pphost DMs (or even non-Pphost DMs, it's hard work after all and should include perks) priority for the Adventure you are running.
For recruiting, use the Session 0 Template, or develop your own with your own style, but include, at least, the same basic information. In addition, use it to start a conversation with potential players to tell them what you want them to know about the Adventure you're running, as well as find out what they're looking for in an Adventure
Once in an Adventure, Player are encouraged to post at least once a day.
Likewise, if you are running an Adventure and you know you will be unable to post for some time, find out if there is another DM who can fill in for you for that time, or if you have to drop out altogether, find a DM who can take over to finish the Adventure or at least bring it to a satisfying end.
DMs should use the DM Profile Creation Template to create a profile page that gives potential Players information on the kinds of Adventures they like to run.
PbP is very different from live gaming, either in person or online. Consider using the suggestions in Best Practices for DMs and if there is something you find really helpful, considering adding it to the list.
No-one should ever be misrepresented here, in text or in any response to ratings systems that may eventually be set up here. The results should always be fair and objective. Any attempts to skew the results of those rating systems, in any direction will be tolerated.
Work with everyone else here to make the Worlds of Pphost even better, in small ways or large, whatever you're comfortable with.
Paste the text between the quote marks, but not including them, in the Reply to this Topic form below. Save it, then edit it for all the options below and save the edits.

Just finished a Character Profile (Malichi) to use as a demonstration. If you run into any problems, ask me questions. In fact, if you want to start the Character Profile in a PM where you can work on it, I'll give you whatever help I can give you (this offer continues until this text disappears)

What you should know about me as a DM
I don't have the depth and breath of DM experience that a lot of other people do. Most of it was in the late 70s to late 80s, then real life got in the way. Finding games has always been elusive since then. That's part of why I'm so excited about PbP and a big part of why I'm doing all this. If you're not incarcerated (and probably quite a few people who are) you can get in on a PbP game of D&D. This is an effort to make it more fun and to help more games conclude successfully. I'll be starting out slow, but one things I've always enjoyed is recycling story elements from one game to the next.
Also I like turning things on their head. A voice way in the back of my head will say "turn" and the next thing I do will be backwards, inside out or upside down. It's a lot of fun.
You might be wondering about the inclusion of subjects like genocide, homophobia or racism and such. I think fiction can be a great way to talk about things that we can never talk about. There will be no mention here about the Jews in Nazi Germany, Tutsis in Rwanda or the Serbians in Croatia, however a renegade sect of the followers of Torm has decreed that all Tieflings must be put to death (what are you gonna do?). In real life race is a fictional construct used to allow one group of people oppress and exploite another. In D&D, different races are real and can be use to tell stories we might otherwise shy away from. Likewise religions like . . . ya know, I'm not even going to start. Any character bringing a real life religion into Pphost will be shot, stabbed, set on fire, stomped on and banished. Just don't do it. And, in fact, you can ignore all of it by judicious use of the check boxes in the consent section of your Character Profile. As for me, "Let that be your last battleground" made an indelible mark on me as a kid, both in how I look at things and how I tell stories.
Let's have fun!

So do I understand correctly, that this can be played in the following way? :
I want to play an adventure -> joins some available one
Plays the said adventure
adventure ends -> character takes a break (and goes farming or whatever)
I am not in the mood for another one right now -> Take a break for a few weeks (irl)
I want to play again with my original character -> GOTO 1
Absolutely. And your character keeps whatever progress they've made towards the next level, along with any gold, treasures, Magic items they gain in the Adventure you played (whatever you don't spend in downtime anyway). Your character is ready whenever you are for that next Adventure.
Currently we only have one world, but my hope is that as other DMs realize the advantages of what we're doing here, some of them will want to create their own worlds here as well.
Haven
Haven is a recently discovered wilderness demiplane. Most of it is still unexplored. There is a small settlement, also called Haven with a population of about 650 people and growing every day. Haven has always had a problem with transplaner travel. Rifts have been known to just open up spontaneously, close the next minute or next day, only to reappear a week or two later. Magically created portals are also problematic. They can open up on wildly different locations than the one intended and be much smaller or much larger than intended. One tore out a small mountain a while back and nobody has any idea of when or if, it's returning. The Wizard doing the most research in this area is Cassandra of Cassandra's Magic, located in the scholar's section of Haven. Most of the work done there is by her two apprentices while she forever tinkers with the teleportation circle she's always trying to stabilize.
All kinds of businesses, people and opportunities abound in Haven. Some are "family friendly", some are decidedly not. Players should keep an eye out for "Consent Signs" and just have fun!
Excellent start to the Character Profile. Just a couple of items. At the end of Ability Scores (set off with **s), this is a racial bonus. You get this just by picking Human and DnD Beyond's Character Creation method will add it automatically. The 1st level ASI gives you an additional 2 Ability Score points that you can put as 2 points to one ability or 1 point to two scores (instructions on how to do this. Let me know if they can be clearer). Instead of points, you can take a 1st level Feat. These are Feats exclude anything with "Master", "Adapt" or implies years of study (except "Chef", just cause) Included are anything "Initiate" or implies that you were born this way (Someone "born this way" but not till 4th level just never made sense to me). It's an additional way to define your character, make them unique. They might be a "born leader", someone with a naturally keen mind, tough hide, etc. This goes in what is now a blank line under Class. The Sharable Link you have at the end of Class goes on a new line below the ASI. Otherwise it looks great. Next things is submit it using the link just above the list of 1st level Feats. I know it might look like one of those buttons of some street crossings signals have where you press it but it's not connected to anything, but this one really is. It adds you're profile to a spreadsheet used to track gold and downtime and a few other things. It's my hope that these things will get automated so DMs get less bogged down in "paperwork" and spend more time running Adventures. Having these profiles in a more machine readable form will make this easier.
While I'm here I'd like to appologize to you and everyone else that Haven (with Adventures) isn't online yet. The last couple of days, well, you probably don't want to hear about it. Anyway, I'm hoping to be finished 5/28. In the meantime we'll need a few more players (due to the DM agreement section I can't use Malichi) I have two Adventures almost ready to roll. "Weekend in the Tavern" which will take place over roughly two weeks real time and needs 4-6 1st to 2nd level players and Wilderness Patrol roughly a month (enough to get you to 2nd level), also for 4-6 players.

Character Submission Link

Absolutely. And your character keeps whatever progress they've made towards the next level, along with any gold, treasures, Magic items they gain in the Adventure you played (whatever you don't spend in downtime anyway). Your character is ready whenever you are for that next Adventure.

Thanks for the answer, this seems interesting. I will go through the rules above and make a player application.
The Worlds of Pphost
