After a long day working in the family tannery Korey was ready to kick back and get a much needed drink. Life was tough here in Hagar a remote town of the Bellor Empire. She knew that Bawd’s Saloon was just the place to be. Making her way into the dingy wood tavern was like a second home. Light peaked in from the windows, and set the dust to look like golden fireflies. In the corner sat a huge black bear, stuffed from some hunt long gone. The creature stood eight feet tall, maw agape as if it was in the midst of getting at it’s attacker. Past the saloon door Korey made out her old friend Halton Bawd. Halton was walking about the tavern, his long blonde hair tossing about as he grabbed empty mugs and cleaned off tables. It seemed there had been patrons before Korey arrived, but the tavern was empty now. Except for the old chipper halfling dancing about. “Oi! Korey!! How’s it lass? Come come.” The halfling pointed up toward the bar. “How’s ya pa?”As he spoke he walked up to where he was pointing, hopping up to the bar and grabbing a new cup. "What's it ya drinking today?" then looking around his bar one last time, even though he knew it was empty. "First one is on the house." He whispered.
"Heya, Hal," the silver-haired human replies. She dusts off her leather jerkin, handmade by her father, as she steps into the bar. She makes her way towards the counter. A sign of concern shows on her face when Halton asks of her father. She lets out a slow sigh after a long day in the leatherworking shop, "He's doing...okay, I suppose. Wish he'd take it easy around the shop. He's not as young as he thinks he is. Thinks he has to keep up with me, if you know what I mean" she flashes a half-smile as she is quite proud of her skill at the family trade. She crosses one leg over the other and gives her boot a quick polish. "Lemme see... Gotta any of that dwarven stout? Stuff's thick and delicious, not to mention has a nice kick," there's almost no ale she won't turn down."Quiet in here tonight. Didn't think it was that late." She surveys the empty bar, giving the bear in the corner a slight, respectful nod.
"Aye those dwarves of clan Stonesmith really know how to brew. Here ya go." Halton stepped off his raised platform behind the bar to walk over to one of the many casks of ale. A tarnished iron tankard in hand. He stopped at the third barrel down, and began to slowly open the tap, letting the first dredges fall into the trough below before placing the tankard under the tap at a precise and practiced angle and filling up Korey's stout. "I'm working on a new mead, I still haven't gotten everything down on this ale brewing process. I can whip up a good firewater but this beer is getting the best of me at the moment, but its coming along." He was speaking to Korey but not at the same time, just speaking out to his empty bar.
Halton finished off pouring the stout, a nice brown creamed foam at the top. He made his way back over to Korey, and stepped up on his pedestal so that he would be somewhat eye level with her as she was sitting. He leaned up against the bar, his golden eyes showing concern and understanding. "I understand about ya pa, mine was the same." Mentioning his father Halton looked around the tavern once more and then began speaking to Korey again. "Some men, just feel like they need to give us everything. Last I heard him say, there wasn't anyone in the three kingdoms who could keep up with you." The halfling gave a laugh and smile. "Aye it's empty in here tonight. Some of the boys from the town heard of some beast prowling the woods. Supposedly killing some live stock or something. So they decided it was up to them to go get glory. One of the fools promised to mount the beasts head above the bar for me." Halton gave out another laugh, this one coming from deep in his belly. "He's a damn fool, gods love him though."
"Tricky stuff, that brewing is. You'll get the hang of it soon." Korey grabs the tankard with both hands and brings it up to her face, just below her chin. It's almost as if it has a warming effect over her. "Ah...yes. Here we are."She takes a sip and some of the foam adheres to her upper lip. "Why don't you join me? Don't think nobody's gonna mind."
She takes a deeper drink and adds with a salute of her mug, "We're lucky to have such good guys in our lives." She then becomes lost in her thoughts for a moment recalling her younger years with her father, Vance. She is definitely a daddys-girl, and they have always been close since she was an only child and her mother, Olivia, died from the coughing sickness when Korey was six...
Coming back to the present, Korey cocks head to the side at the mention of dead livesrock. "That's no good. Hard enough as it is out here. We don't need something poaching our food supply." She pulls a small knife from her belt and begins twirling it with her fingers."Fools indeed. Some of them more likely to cut off a foot, if it's the same group of boys that I'm thinking of. Hell, I saw Aldric Powell with his head stuck in a bucket the other day!"She shakes her head and snickers, "I hope that they took someone along that knows what they're doing."
"I will have to take you up on that." Halton said as he reached under the bar and pulled out an old silver flask in one hand and two small stone cups. Popping the top of the flask he pours the brown liquid in each cup, the smell of pine needles and charred wood fill the air as the cups are poured. He pushes one forward to Korey, and raises the other to his lips and takes a sip. "They say the beast tour the livestock to shreds. Some big beast could only have done to these animals what they described, that or they were making stories. That Powell boy is an idiot, I do have to say so myself. That fool Garrin Husk is the one that leads those boys, I foresee that going about as good as that Powell boy leading the courageous men on a dragon hunt." With the last comment the halfling gives another laugh and brings his cup to his lips again taking a longer drag than the first time.
"Whew! That'll put the hair on your chest," Korey ribs Halton with her elbow after taking a sip of the liquor, then a sip of the ale to cleanse the palate. She gives a hearty laugh thinking of the inept boys trying slay this beast, and slides off her bar stool a little.
Her brow furrows a bit and her grayish-green eyes turn sharp. "To shreds they say? Sounds like the bears are getting brave again. Wouldn't be the first time we've had a bear problem,"she points over shoulder with her thumb at the bear in the corner, "and shouldn't be too hard to this time around. I've been training with that half-elf, Laucian Nailo. He's taught me a thing or three with my bow." She gives a wink to her friend and takes another sip from the stone cup.
Halton finishes off what was left in his stone cup with one last drink, and then pours another out from his flask before putting the top on and hiding it under the bar. "Could be a bear, but it sounds more ferocious. Then again, those could be just exaggerations." He says while taking another sip, "So training with the bow. Hmm. What do you plan on doing with that, hunting some big game yourself?" Halton asks while looking Korey in the eyes. He opened his mouth to say something else when he stopped and looked up towards the door of the tavern squinting his eyes and cocking his head.
A commotion could be heard outside, it sounded like two boys were running and screaming. Just barely Korey could make out, "..it killed them... it tore their... one big claw... it was a beast..." She could also hear other older voices shouting for healers and through the window she could see three people, one being carried by the other two.
"I've always enjoyed hunting around the nearby woods. Ya know, to get away from it all from time to time." One can tell she longs for more time out in the wilds by her tone. "But it's hard sometimes to find the time as much as I'm needed around the house and shop these days." Korey matches the halflng's pace with her drink. She begins to tell Halton of how Nailo has taught her how to combine some minor arcane magics into her arrows; she doesn't quite have this technique down. Also, he has been helping with her accuracy and general survival skills.
Hearing the frantic voices from outside, Korey jumps from the barstool and dashes to the door. "Oh my lords! This doesn't look good, Hal." She brings a hand to her forehead and watches as the two of the boys carry their friend down the street. "Looks like they bit off more than they could handle. We were more right than we knew ,"not so much mockingly, but more sorry that they were correct in the assessment of boy's abilities. "Oh dear, Hal! C'mon, let's see if we can help!" She steps out into the street and calls after the boys, "What did this?!"
"It was a beast. A wolf the size of a... of a bear... It tore Athelm in two, with a single claw. It was waiting for us... it was by the great oak in the forest." The healers had arrived as Korey and Halton make it out of the bar, as well as other members of the village. They took the boys to the healing house in town. Making her way to the hut Korey could hear townsfolk gossiping about the cuts and scratches on the boys, the look of fear in their eyes.
"This doesn't seem good dear. If a beast is that big, it can cause a real threat to this village. It can... well it can wipe out our food supplies. Take down our hunters, kill our game in the forest. Many of us rely on that. As well I won't be able to get anymore of the gooseberries I need for my new mead." Fear gripped Halton's eyes. Yes he made a jest about his mead, but that was a coping mechanism that Korey new all to well. Hard times for the village meant villagers needed more drink, but had less money, also with more drink meant more rowdiness, and Halton wasn't built to handle all of the village causing an uproar in his little tavern.
Entering the the healing house, Korey prepares herself for what she's about to find inside. Hearing the bits of the encounter, the concern grows on her face, "Waiting for you? As if it knew you were coming? Were any other's left behind?"
She turns back to the halfling and gives a slight chuckle at his attempt at jest. "Can't have anything keeping you from that. I haven't tasted the perfected brew yet." Korey turns to make her way out of the healing house having heard enough. She lets out a sighs and scratches at her temple, "Whelp, suppose I should head back to the house and grab my gear. Time to put these new hunting lessons to use."
Korey heard a yell from one of the boys as the healer begin working on him. She was quickly pushed out of the healing house with the rest of the that had showed up and were trying to get answers. "He must of heard us, he must of seen us before we saw him." Was all she heard from Aldric as she finally was forced out on the street.
"You be careful now. If anything were to happen to you I myself will travel to the heavens and rip you back from The Nine. You're to good a friend for me to lose, one of my only." Hal said as he looked up at Korey. A sense of worry across his face.
Korey kisses her fingers then applies the kiss to Halton's cheek with a bit of a smack. "Don't be getting mushy on me now, Hal."Considering her friendship for a moment, she goes down on her knees to get at eye level with the halfling, and takes his hands in hers. "I'll be okay."She gives him a meek smile, then a quick hug. She stands, dusts off her britches and begins to walk away, "Keep a mug of that stout ready for me,"she calls back with a wink.
There's definitely nothing extravagant about the Ridley homestead and leathershop. Their plot of land lies towards the edge of town as the tanning process produces some rather foul odors at times. A simple two bedroom house lies toward the front of the property near the road. On the porch sit couple of rocking chairs made with straps of woven leather for the seat and back - the leather sags a bit indicating frequent use.
Korey throws open the screen door and calls out into the quiet house. "Goose...," not really expecting an answer as her father is likely in the shop. She continues through the quaint kitchen/living area on to her room. She grabs her bow off the wall, and quiver and other hunting gear which rest in a corner below. Beneath her bed she grabs a small shield, which she throws over he back, and a sheathed scimitar, which she attaches to her belt. Lastly, she picks up a necklace that hangs on one of the posts of her headboard - a small glass orb of swirling purple and green glass on a silver chain. She gives it a kiss and whispers, "Might need your help here, Momma." She puts it around her neck then tucks it inside her jerkin.
The woman approaches the back door and prepares herself for the coming conversation with her father. Out the door, off the back porch she scoops up her pack with some other useful items and throws it over a shoulder. Various animal hides are seen draped about drying racks in different stages of the tanning process are outside the shop. Lamp light shines out out - as the night is almost fully upon the town - through the double sliding door of the building. Vance has probably been working away through the evening, being in the same position at his work bench where Korey left him. "Hey, Goose....You're working too hard again," she lightly scolds. She nervously adjusts her gear as she waits for her father to turn around.
"Have to finish that order for the Alderman." Vance's voice is raspy, and Korey could hear his more ragged breathing. Years of working with the potash alum and salt mixture that Vance himself came up with, making the tanning process faster but also cleaner and more efficient had caused some havoc on his body. Mostly seen from the sounds of his voice and a horrible cough he has at times. Looking up from his work of shaving the hair off a particular deer he turns and looks at his daughter, "Korrina, just where do you think you're going? I know not hunting, there is a beast out in those woods. Someone just brought me an ass that it slaughtered. That monsters had the taste of blood and it won't soon stop at its fill." with the knife he was using in hand he pointed to a dead mule in the corner. Korey could make out different cuts and tears in the animals body. "It's too dangerous honey." Worry sank into the man's voice, and face while he took in his daughter.
"I can help you with that when I get back,"Korey approaches her father and places a hand on his back. She glances down at the slain animal then back to Vance. "And you're going to have more of these animals show up if we don't do anything about it. Some boys tried to go after it but one of them almost ended up getting cut in half. I can't let anyone else who doesn't know what they're doing." She moves around to face him, "You know I can handle myself out there, plus I've been training with Nailo."
"I know you can my Korrina, but I worry. I wouldn't be able to go on without you my dear. You're my entire world, you're my Korrina." So much affection and love pour into the man's face as he looks down at his daughter. "I also know you have so much of your mother in you, and even if I forbade it, you would still go because you want to protect those whom cannot. So go, and dispatch this beast, and come back home to me."
Her father looks on at her as Korey starts grabbing the last of the things she needs, and then blows her a kiss and a wave as she steps out of the shop before returning to his work.

Korey's eyes begin to well a little with tears hearing her father express his concern. She clears her throat and blinks her tears away so as to not get too emotional. In her head she keeps repeating: Nothing to worry about, just another hunt. Before she leaves, she gives her father a peck on the cheek. "Love you too, Dad."
As she makes her way out of the shop, she lets out a long breath. Pulling the hood of her cloak up, she then marches off toward the forest - making her way to the mentioned great oak where the boys encountered the beast. The closer she gets to her destination she takes more care as to be quiet and keep an eye out for signs of the beast. So as not to be caught off guard, she has her bow in hand with an arrow notched.

Making her way out of the town of Hagar Korey begins to trek along the path to the edge of the forest. The Great Oak was a place that all those of Hagar knew, it is in a glade next to some rock formations and a little cave that many of the townsfolk have played at for years. It seems that every member of Hagar has had some kind of fun or interaction there. Korey made her way through the under brush trying to be as quiet as possible but her nerves were getting the best of her stepping on branches and twigs that have been long dried. It takes her about an hour to reach the outer edge of the glade where the great oak lay.

Looking about the glade Korey can barely make out her surroundings in the dimly lit glade. The moon had not yet made its way high enough in the sky to provide any light down on the woods. Korey could barely make out the cave opening ahead and to the right of her. The forest was quiet and still, it seemed the forest was at peace even though there was a beast within it.

Growing nervous that she hasn't seen any sign, however Korey does not want to alert anything to her presence with any sort of torch. She continues on through the grove to the cave opening. She presses up to the wall outside the cave and listens for any sign of life.

Korey could barely make out the cave opening ahead and to the right of her. The forest was quiet and still, it seemed the forest was at peace even though there was a beast within it.

OOC: Is Korey familiar with this cave, knowing how deep it goes?
