Fiefdoms in a Broken Land is a new Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Campaign in an original world. The focus will be on a combination of roleplay, dungeon delving and critically, managing an isolated fiefdom beyond the frontiers of civilization.
The Setting
77 years ago Marator enjoyed a golden age until the execution of Witch-Queen Shilboth unleashed the Withering on its ruling class. Captured in battle by the Justice Guard, all had thought Shilboth's power broken until she poured forth her death curse. The Withering, as it came to be known, infected the very land of the far flung Maratorian Empire with a malaise which beset any who would seek to lead so much as a village council with misfortune, disease and untimely death.
Though the Emperor and his Court were protected from the curse by mighty wards in the Imperial Palace walls, the rest of the Empire were not so fortunate. From the far eastern reaches of Mithridel, where the Skybreaker Mountains split the land to the shores of the Agaean Ocean to the west, chaos soon reigned. From barons to hamlet matriarchs, leaders fell to the curse or saw their every decision twisted to calamity by the Withering. The curse lingered in the very land and affected any mortal upon whom the mantle of leadership was thrust. Soon, the ranks of those willing to carry that burden grew thin.
The Maratorian Empire retreated, region after region left to fend for itself as nobility, governors and lawmakers became scarce and then unheard of. These came to be known as the Withered Lands. The threat of the Withering kept the territorial ambitions of neighbors largely at bay, but raids for the treasures of a decaying kingdom became common place. As the light of civilization dimmed, other things emerged from the shadows, things requiring no leaders to prey upon villagefolk or even those too distant from mortality for the Withering to trouble.
Present Day Rumors circle in the dilapidated streets of Thar, the capital of what is still mockingly referred to as the Maratorian "Empire," the Withering is beginning to fade. The rough taverns and filthy docks are awash with whispers that several expeditions have lain claim to villages in the Withered Lands. Already, ambitious Lords and Ladies, those who have managed to hoard away some meager funds threw the decay of the Empire, are putting out the call. Those with a thirst for adventure and riches, or just those with no place else to turn, can find a new future by joining an exhibition.
One such Lady, the Duchess Bizmaria, has issued exactly such a call. Having each performed some small service for her in the past, she offers each of you the chance to sign on before the rabble does and forge a new future in a land which may finally have emerged from beneath the shadow of Shilboth 's vengeance.

Jacob Bray - The Call of Lon-Dia, Human Bloodhunter 3
Backstory: Aio was raised in a small tribe to the North, living off the land as a hunter and gatherer. She was a cheerful youth and a content adult until a tragedy befell her people. She, alone, survived and was marked by a dramatic shift in her appearance. Her feathers turned a jet black from their previous white and tan. She was turned away from all the other tribes she visited because of her curse. She dedicated her life to ritual, somberness, and meekness in order to make up for her failure to save her people. She is determined that she will not fail to save innocents from destruction again.
More to be revealed about her past as the story develops.
If Aarakocra Monk doesn't work out, I can swap her for something else. She just sounds like she could be pretty fun.
3. Backstory a bit: Qitrana (Qit for short) was abandoned on the side of the road as an infant baby. Was floated around home to home with random strangers making my way to a town with an orphanage that would take in a Tiefling child. Taking many years before an orphanage would take him in, he slowly developed a chip on his shoulder.
Once getting town (Silverymoon was my original idea but for your setting i can change it to a medium size town or city) that took him in, he was in a religious orphanage. The headmaster seem to have it out against Qit, giving him hard time and extra work. He instilled into Qit self loathing for his bastardized heritage. Headmaster took a liberal hand in discipline on Qit growing up. Qit also growing up with people pushing him off to another family, he picked up the distrust humans have for his people. Qit grew up hearing all the whispers around him about Tieflings and their evil tendencies. Qit always had pair of eyes on him no mater where he went in town. Qit took all this unwanted attention and with his upbringing in a church internalized. This led to him believing this behavior people have against him is because of his heritage and is part of the gods punishing him. Qit grew up never meeting another Tiefling he assumes this is what it is like for all his kin.
Once Qit was old enough and smart enough he left the orphanage to attend a school in Daggerford (Large city name can change to on that has a magic school). Apon arriving at the school for magic in Daggerford, he was promptly shown back out the door for being a Tiefling.
Qit wondered the streets with no more coin in his pouch. After weeks on the streets and local towns until he found a temple for Lathander. The temple took Qit in and offered the young man a place in the worship if he vowed to reject his past. The kindness of the temple residence was different from what Qit has ever experienced in his life. His skilled insight told him that these people where genuine and had no bias because of his race. This religion of rebirth that his god perched was welcoming path for Qit to make up for his heritage.

Rel is known for having a smug look on his face or a Nervous one, Usually its the nervous one. Luckily he had a few habits he’d fall back on to keep his nervousness at bay - Either taking a pinch of salt from hit seasoning pouch or in dire times stuffing his face with bread. He grew up in a loving family with both parents. He gained the looks from his mother, especially her green eyes and freckles
Biography: Rel's family ran a bakery; known as Sour Dough Breads in a local port town most of their customers were travelers and adventurers so Rel saw all kinds of people. Though one day their goods brought in someone from a Prestigious Noble house to their port town. normally this would be good news, yet they wanted to buy the shop and the surrounding properties and it was good coin - Yet Rel's family would not give up their family business and declined their offer.
Opposing them did not go well. Within a month agents bought up all the surrounding properties and began to open other shops that took away all of the Bakery's profits until they finally went belly up and had to sell the shop for less than dirt.
Rel was about 19 when he began falling into a life of crime to try and bring some money in for his family so they could stop living in poverty or at the very least move elsewhere. sadly it didn't go as planned, "Nothing ever does" Rel commonly said
He was found out before he turned 20 and was kicked out of the port town he grew up in, he never let his parents in on his plans so lucky they didn't also get run out of town. He now stands at 5'8 feet, his mid-length chestnut hair. He wears the bandanna he used to wear to keep his hair out of his face while working at the bakery tied around her arm, normally wearing a simple vest and shirt with a few hidden pockets and pants while going about town.
Having no home to go back to he looked to find another, But first he'd find out who caused such grief for his family and why they had to destroy his parent's livelihood - seeing his chance to get closer to royalty he took up the lady’s call, though if he were to find out the lady was apart of the reason, he would be her downfall. His overall goal is to one day open his own bakery once he had found the one responsible.
I would love to join this campaign. I'd like to play a heavy magic character Sorcerer/Warlock. I'm also cursed with Adult responsibilities, but I do find time to post very regularly.
Thank so much for the interest so far guys. No problem with any of the character concepts or backgrounds posted so far.
Happy to consider the Aarakocra Monk, but if we get into it and flying is just completely breaking things left and right, a wing injury or the evolution of the curse may limit her ability to soar (or some other story-relevant contrivance). If that possibility doesn't sound like fun, perhaps a different race might work. As I said, happy to start off with flying fully enabled and only resort to wing-clipping if it proves absolutely necessary to keep the game interesting and challenging.
Sounds good. I don't think it will be a problem, though. They can't hover and they need tons of space to take off and such. The real bonus is really just extra distance. I could do the same thing with Tabaxi and feline agility with more range, only having to spend a turn immobile. Which wouldn't be too bad, since she's a monk. I just liked the flavor of Aarakocra better.
But if we have data share, Lizardfolk would be my first choice, to be honest. A similar backstory, but Lizardfolk is just fun.
I'd be interested in playing as well, if you have any spots left. I don't have much experience in PbP, but I should be able to commit to at lease 1 post a day.
Male Half-Elf Draconic Sorcerer. I'll fill in the details later.
EDIT: Erdan, Charlatan half-elf Sorcerer. He is going to focus on manipulation over straight damage.
If a spot is still open then I would like to try playing either a full or half orc barbarian by the name of Thokk.
Thokk was raised in a barbarian tribe that wanders the lands claimed by the ancestors of the tribe as holy grounds. From a young age he was taught to fight so that any outsiders that wandered into their lands could be repelled. Through his younger years there was battle between his and the other tribes that claimed the ground as sacred. While they would not wipe each other out the various tribes would do whatever possible to thwart others. This was the simple life Thokk lived until he was an adult.
As a young adult Thokk was able to join war parties and did so when a large group of outsiders ventured into their territory. As was usually done, the warriors rushed on and slaughtered them to the last man. Little did they know the leader of the group had been a the child of a warlord that had risen to power in the region and that by killing him they had brought the wrath of warlord upon themselves. It only took days before a host that outnumbered them two to one charged into the tribes camp, annihilating any that so much as lifted a weapon to them. Thokk mamanged to fight back but was wounded to the point he was assumed dead. When he woke up, Thokk mamanged to walk to safety but had to spend several weeks near death before he recovered enough to travel. Now with no where to go he has taken to wandering as a lone warrior who sells his skills for food, money or just for the thrill of a fight.

Wow, these campaigns fill so fast! I'd love to join but it looks like you have quite a few applicants!
If you could put me on the waiting list that would be great! I won't make a whole backstory yet but if someone drops or you have room my character idea is basic: A human ranger by the name of "Jeff". He did some shady recon work for the Lady back in the day so she knows I can keep my word and be trusted. Jeff is keen to be done with these trying times and jumps at the chance to join her expedition.
(Good luck to everyone, have fun and get in touch if you'd like me to roll Jeff up!)
An interesting setting, I would love to join this.
Haseren, male, Folk Hero, Half-Orc Fighter.
After Haseren was abandoned by the orc tribe his father lived in, he was found and adopted by a kind old man, a cook by the name of Salomen. In his new home in the village of Eldifel, Haseren grew up, and learned the use of Cook's Utensils.
On the fall following Haseren's 18th summer, a band of bandits set their focus on his new home. Their leader was infamous in the area, having many bounties on his head, including one set by Lady Bizmaria herself. The bandits came in the dark of the night and everything was going in their favor, except for two things. Firstly, they were all humans and thus had no darkvision of note. They did carry torches, but they were currently unlit so they could surprise the few guards the village held. And secondly, Haseren had woken with the need to hit the loo. He was just about done when he heard a few whispers outside the outhouse. He quickly caught onto what they were up to and grabbing an unlit torch from the wall of the privy he sneaked after them. He opened with a flurry of blows from his makeshift club, and as the first crook managed to light their torch, they saw an angry half-orc roaring at them with their dead boss at his feet. They ran.
Next day the body was identified and after word reached our beloved Duchess, she decided to reward Haseren for ridding her of this thorn. He was sent some money for equipment, and an invitation to the school of fighters in Larawl. There, Hasaren's quick progress and evident common sense cemented his worth in Bizmaria's eyes.
It took me a couple hours to write this while doing something else on the side, and quite a few people managed to post in that time. I hope you'll consider all applications equally.
Going to allow applications to accrue for about 12 more hours so as not to discriminate against people outside of my timezone, then go through them all and put a party together.
A huge thank you to everyone who has submitted character concepts so far. The quality has been phenomenal and choosing between them will be a nightmare.
Thanks for the opportunity to join. Hope to get in, the campaign sounds like a great idea.

Hello, I would like to join this campaign. I appreciate that you have given people a chance who weren't able to apply immediately. I think your world and campaign are very interesting, I have always wanted to play in something like this. I enjoy roleplaying in all of its forms and working in a team. My character concept details are as follows (of course, I would be willing to change anything):
Kimbatuul Farideh, female bronze dragonborn paladin, will swear either oath of devotion or oath of conquest at 3rd level.
The Kimbatuul family was once a great and noble one, but with the coming of the Withering, they fell into chaos and infighting. Farideh's grandfather dealt the final blow by declaring a hopeless and petty war on another family that had been their staunchest allies for decades. Farideh was born into poverty in a small and dirty tavern, The Good Blade, in Thar. She never knew her father, and her mother died soon after she was born. Her only memories of her parents are the stories about the days before the Withering that her mother told her. The human owners of the Good Blade took Farideh in as their daughter, and although they grew to love her and she loved them back, they were always busy with trouble at the tavern. Growing up mostly on the streets, she witnessed the terrible violence and anarchy that reigned around her and vowed to put an end to it. Upon reaching adulthood around 15, she retook the all-but-forgotten name of Kimbatuul and swore an oath to Tyr to prove that the memory of law and order was still alive. She has tried many times to organize some kind of law enforcement organization, although it has always failed miserably. Her one success was capturing and executing a bandit intent on murdering and stealing from the Duchess Bizmaria, who has now offered to repay the favor by giving Kimbatuul Farideh the chance to return justice to at least part of the world.
Horatio Hirschfeld - Squire imbued with fae powers, in the Coliseum of Conquest (W2/L1) DM for Reavers of Harkenwold, and sometimes The Fighting Grounds of the Coliseum
Some background for Erdan. (Can I send you a PM to discuss some stuff about his backstory?)
Erand was born 50ish years after the Withering. He did not remember much about his mother. Erdan's father, Bert, was a tall slim man (human). He was also a thief, and not a good one at that. The problem was, he was also a good man. Bert would only steal from those he felt deserved it; but then he would give away most of there earnings. He also would not stand for any injustice, if he saw it.
Bert taught Erand much; how to survive in the Withering lands, how to cut a purse, how to forge documents. You know, the essentials. Erand was fairly talented with people; he could convince a man to sell him the shirt off his back, then sell it back to him the next day for a profit! The only thing Bert couldn't teach young Erand was about the magic that was building up inside him. "I'm sorry, my boy. That comes from your mother." He would always have a sad smile on his face whenever Erand practiced his magic.
Then it all went sideways. When Erand was around 13 years old, they were passing through a small town (insert small town here). They stopped for a quick meal at a tavern, when a Goliath burst through the door. He demanded all the money from the Barkeep. Erand could see his father tense, but did not interfere.... until the Barkeep's little boy tried to confront the bandit! Before the Goliath was even able to raise his hand to backhand the boy, Bert was up and attacking. Erand had never seen his father move so quickly or viciously before! He bested the Goliath with ease. They tried to leave town quickly, but the Barkeep insisted they stay the night. The next morning, several of the townsfolk offered Bert a job as the towns protector. Bert, being the good man that he was, could not say no.
Bert did a good job as the town's protector. This caused the people to start looking up to him and asking for his advice. Every time Erand raised concerns about the Whithering, his father had the same answer. "Its been a long time since that old witch cursed this land. And besides, these people need our help." It took about a year before the Whithering took him.
After that, at the age of 14, Erand left that town. He conned, swindled, and stole his way across the old Maratorian Empire. He vowed to only look out for himself from then onwards. But, he was his father's son. He couldn't help but to leave some coin with the children on the street corners. He occasionally cast some spells to allow victims to slip free of there aggressors. He just couldn't help himself.
He did occasional work for Duchess Bizmaria, usually just forgeries. When she told him of this expedition, he couldn't pass it up. He had to see for himself if the Whithering was truly fading.

Pit of Vipers: Watl Wiggins - Halfling Rogue(10)
League of Improbable Adventurers: Alan Quatermain - Human Fighter(3)

Sounds like fun. I would like to join,. if you are accepting. I was thinking of a Dragonborn Fighter/Sorcerer, would that be ok? Would be mostly for combat or interrogation, maybe a frontline fighter.

Hi all.
