Hello everyone, I haven't run a campaign in a while and I have a nice Out of the Abyss book staring at me here. Who wants to explore the Underdark?
About the campaign and the story so far: most of the story will take place in the Underdark, a continent sized cavern maze under the Sword Coast in the Forgotten Realms. Players will wake up in a drow prison cell and figure things out from there. You can decide how you came out to be capture by the dark elves or choose that the poison used to capture you messed with your memory and figure out the details later.
About the play style: the game will be contained here in this forum and we'll use the integrated dice roller. We'll have a IC (in character) thread and will keep OOC (out of character) in private messages. I'll do my best to post daily.
About characters: everyone will start at level 2. All official sources are allowed, please no homebrew races or classes. You can roll for ability scores here (no rerolling of ones) and then decide if you want to use that array or point buy. You'll start in prison, with no equipment or coins, and will have to scavenge your way out.
If you want to join: post here stating your character's name, class and race. You will also need to roll a d10 and a d20 separately in your application post. I plan to leave this open for a few days and then roll here to pick 4 or 5 players.
Name: Tanis Shaidaro (<-- link to dndbeyond character sheet) Race: Custom Lineage (mutt with one quarter wood-elven blood) Class: Ranger Background: Custom - Scout (see backstory below) Backstory: Those cursed duergar!
Tanis Shaidaro grew up in Icewind Dale, son of a half-elven fletcher father and human baker mother, accustomed to playing and hiding in the cold and dark woods. And always good with arrows, quarrels and bows of all types as trained by his father. The youngest of 3 children, as an adolescent, he ran away from home in Caer Dineval to Bryn Shander and enlisted as a scout under sheriff Markham Southwell.
Tanis was scouting for a detachment on the tail of duergar causing mischief on the surface, down into the tunnels below Sunblight Fortress, when he committed the fatal sin of getting out too far ahead of his party. He found himself blundering into the edge of a pitched battle between the same duergar and a small force of drow elite warriors in a deep subterranean cavern. The dark elves had routed the gray dwarves and Tanis was just not quite good enough at hiding to escape the sharp notice of the victors, who added him to their line of chained captives.
... (thought he was cleverer than the drow, thought he was just as slick as any arcane trickster ever foaled, and wound up getting arcane tricked himself) (Charlatan background)
Backstory: Pog was born the second son of a second son of a b... well, never mind ;) His family always wanted to groom him to be his sister's chief advisor and political majordomo in the maneuverings and negotiations so common to nobility anywhere, Underdark or no, but Pog ... frankly, just didn't want to. It's not that he didn't have a mind more than sufficiently sharp for that position -- more that his mind was TOO sharp. Add to that a streak of contrarian that loves to flout convention and dazzle people OPENLY with his brilliance, rather than in the hushes and shadows of high level politics anywhere, and his wayward disappearance was only a matter of time. He wandered idly through the Underdark at first, always sensing he was called to he knew not what, but having no purpose or occupation until then save what he crafted for himself. Which was to PRETEND he'd crafted something himself and then get someone else to pay him for it. Until the day he found out it was he who had been tricked, and purchased, and now belonged to the unchained and wild magic who was born where the Feywild and the Weave of Faerun proper rub against each other, and wild mages and sorcerors are the volatile sparks that are struck.
But his eyes sparkled nonetheless ... they truly did ... when he thought of the drow. Those dark bastards had been tricking and fooling his people for millenia. Maybe it was time they got a dose of their own medicine ...
====================
The only svirfneblin to have the foggiest clue where he was, even before his capture, was ... his twin sister. Although she has always been secretly jealous of his freedom and distressed by his rebelliousness, they have shared a secret bond since childhood and indeed sometimes pretended to be each other before certain ... anatomical obviousnesses ... made that impossible to pull off. And like many twins, they shared a secret language that only they could understand, and every now and then a note would come to her that only she could read. He'd sent her the last one over a week ago, he knew she'd worry ... he had to get out of here. No, he really had to. Now. And if he manages to actually pull off bufalloing at least a few drow, so much the better. Maybe these nice people might help ... doesn't look like too many of them have any particular reason to like drow either ...
Background: Was out mining for gems, strayed a little too far from the safety of the dwarven tunnels and was ambushed by a party of drow. Woke up to find himself a prisoner. May Moradin save him.
Backstory (if you want): Thunk is not the brightest bulb in the litter. But he may be the biggest. Thunk may have just been invited down into the prison and asked to put on the chains, there's a better than average chance he would just shrug and do it. Unless they made him mad... So, dumber than average Orc Barbarian who is easily swayed by those around him, though more easily angered and blindly smashing things.
Ability Scores: Ability scores: 161111141116
D10: 1
D20: 14
Wait... did you say you are rolling to chose who gets in??? lol, that's new.
Backstory: Orlando weren't never an especially well-liked man... with a nasty mark on his face from the start and a nasty attitude to match, it was only natural that he fell into a life of crime. Now look where it got 'im, locked up in some pit somewhere. But there's a silver linin' to it all... that mark comes with some strange powers that just might prove useful in bustin' out of this pit...

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
