The notices are posted everywhere in the run-down city of Mara, to the eastern edge of the Tanglebrier Forest. It was once a thriving little city as caravans passed through, seeking sell-swords and travelers of all kinds for protective services to and from the Greenwold. Legend has it that even the four great heroes that supposedly ended the Second Great Dragon War a thousand years prior got their start in this very city. It is unfounded legend, but the tale has persisted and the city is determined to stand by it, hence 'Heroes' Gate' the singular entrance and exit from the city for traveling folks.
The sun itself is only just rising above the horizon as a rather dour looking dwarf has settled himself just outside the gate, eyes desperately searching for anyone with either a flier, or who appears fighting fit. Not much further beyond there is a group of six wagons with various folks, some wagons more subdued and others glaringly fantastical. Most of the group is human through various ages with a singular, colorful gnome among them who, after some gesticulating and wild smiles, departs over toward the dwarf in question.
"Don't worry, Duggie, I'm certain someone will show up soon," the gnome said brightly. "After all, there's always someone looking for work in the city. Why...looks like there's someone coming down the road, now, eh?" From his spot settled outside the gate, the dwarf grunted, not in the least amused by the gnome's antics.
Out from the woods stepped a dwarf. It was a rather odd sight to behold, as most people tend not to associate dwarves with forests. The dwarf was wearing armour made of overlapping metal plates that jingles softly in tune with the tune he was whistling. In his hand was an axe that currently pulled double duty as a walking stick. His hair and beard were of a copper red which made him stand out quite clearly against the forest backdrop of green and brown. On his shoulders rested a shawl of delicate fabric and behind him trailed a cloak ripped and mended in several spots. Supple leather boots were on his feet and a jolly light twinkled in his eyes. His name was Tyrgram and if one did not know any better, he could have been mistaken for a lumberjack.
'Mara.' said Tyrgram as he laid his eyes upon the so called Heroes' Gate. He stretched and dusted some of the more noticeable dirt from his breeches. From his pocket he retrieved a slip of paper. He smoothed out the creases and brought it up to his eyes. His nose nearly touched the paper as he reread it once more.
'Caravan guard... 20 days... 25 gold pieces... Report to Heroes' Gate.' Tyrgram muttered. He looked up from the paper. 'That's here so where is...' He looked around hoping to see this caravan in dire need of protecting.
It was the morning after he scoured the city in search for his father, Dahâren wakes up in the smallest room at one of Maraâs local inn. Itâs foolish of him to believe that his father would still be in the nearest town from the Tanglebrier for twenty winters after he met his mother. Everyone he asks told him to go west, to the big city, Greyhaven it called, they say thereâs a big migration around twenty years ago, lots of people from towns like Mara went to Grayhaven for new opportunities.
Dahâren sits up upon his bed and looks at a piece of paper slipped under the door. It reads, âCARAVAN GUARDS WANTEDâŠto the great city, GRAYHAVEN.â
Dahâren smiles. âI suppose the luck is still with me. I should go with the caravan. They would know the way, and strength in number would be safer than traveling alone.â He mumbles to himself and folds the paper and slips it into one of his pocket and starts getting ready.
He wash his face in front of a mirror. The cheap inn still has a decency to put a wash basin and mirror in the room even though the mattress is as hard as a rock. In the mirror he saw an elf, quite an odd one, with black hair, yellow eyes and light bronze skin wearing a red colored tunic. He is an odd one indeed, a half breed, not quite an elf and not at all human. With a dry towel he wipes the water from his face and wraps a red bandana on his forehead to prevent his long hair from blocking his vision. Then he starts donning his armor. It was a blue lamellar armor, he needed to paint it in different color than his clanâs green, in order to differentiate himself from his clan after he became an outsider.
He checks on his weapons, his bow and arrow, his two hatchets and his sheathed elfblade, equipping them one by one before taking the rest of his inventory on a satchel. On the way out he grabs his trusty walking stick and goes out to the streets below.
Outside the world is still grey, the sky is still dark with a sliver of sunlight on the horizon. The paper said to meet at dawn at the Heroesâ Gate so thatâs where heâs going. Upon arriving at the gate he looks around for one that might be the caravan master and his eyes and ears focuses on the dwarf and gnome pair who was discussing something not far from what seems like to be a group of wagons.
âMorning sir, is the caravan heading to Grayhaven? I happen to go the same way, might as well got paid for it if you need a guard.â He asks, hoping his arms and armor are enough to convince them to hire him.
Riyphou emerged from the dense foliage of the Tanglebrier Forest, his grey, rubbery skin shimmering in the early morning light. He had traveled far from his home in uncivilized mountains far beyond the Tanglebrier Forest, drawn by a curiosity he could not ignore. As he approached the outskirts of Mara, the first town he had ever laid eyes on, he couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation mixed with excitement. The city stood before him, its crumbling walls and bustling streets a stark contrast to the wild and untamed lands he had traversed for so long. It was a world unlike any he had ever known, and he was eager to explore it, to uncover its mysteries -- especially its magic.
As Riyphou passed through the gates of Mara, he couldn't help but notice the curious stares of the townsfolk. His kind hadn't been seen for a long time, known only from stories passed down through the ages. He stood out among the crowd, his massive frame towering over the other inhabitants of the city. Unsure of what to do or where to go, Riyphou wandered through the streets, his eyes wide with wonder at the sights and sounds of this new world. He made his way to the shrine of Myrrah, goddess of the arcane, where he served as an acolyte for a few weeks, learning the ways of magic from the kindly priest who had welcomed him so warmly. During his time at the shrine, Riyphou learned of a large temple dedicated to Myrrah in Grayhaven, a city many days of dangerous travel away. Determined to continue his journey of discovery, he resolved to travel there as soon as he could. As he pondered his next move, Riyphou came across notices posted everywhere catching his attention and announcing a job opportunity as a guard. The kind priest at the shrine told him that it means to protect something, and he thought that this would be his chance to get to Myrrah's temple -- he knows to protect.
Leaving Mara the next morning, he noticed a group of people gathered near the entrance to the city, their wagons packed with all manner of supplies and goods. Among them was a colourful gnome, his wild gestures and bright smile catching Riyphou's attention. Intrigued, Riyphou made his way towards the group, his massive form towering over the gnome. The gnome, noticing him approach, turned and greeted him with a friendly smile. "Hello there, friend!" the gnome said, his voice filled with cheer. "Are you here to join our caravan? We're heading out of the city and could use someone with your... stature to help us along the way."Riyphou nodded, intrigued by the offer. "I am Riyphou," he rumbled. "I seek passage to Grayhaven, and can... hum... help to protect." The gnome grinned, motioning for Riyphou to join them. "It's a dangerous journey, but with your help, I'm sure we'll make it there in one piece."Riyphou nodded, a sense of excitement building within him. He realises, that this was the opportunity he had been searching for. Though, where it will lead him - other than the city he had heard so much about in the last few weeks - he couldn't tell. But wherever his journey may lead him, one thing was certain - he would face it with courage, wisdom, and a heart full of curiosity.
In the morning, Maxie crawled out her her backpack, where she had made a nest out of a blanket. She had rented the smallest room in the inn, which was still far too larger her her. In comparison, the backpack nest was nice and cozy..
Maxie pulled out the flyer again, unrolled it on the bed, checking it one last time. This was the start of her adventure! It might not be as glorious as fighting dragons, but everyone needs to start somewhere, and caravan guard was an important job. She just hoped they didn't have a height requirement... Well it was time to get going, using her magic to freshen up, she starting casting the ritual that let her move easily though the city.
At the Hero's Gate, those gathered by the wagons were treated to an unusual sight. Coming out from the gate was a backpack. It moved as if it were being worn by someone, but there was no one there. Just a backpack strolling down the road. As the backpack got closer, a mouse wearing robes could be seen riding atop the backpack, with a dagger strapped to it's back.
While there were many around, it wasn't too hard to figure out who was in charge. Having her unseen servant head in that direction, Maxie called out in a high squeaky voice, "Hi! I'm heat to apply as a caravan guard." She then proudly added, "I'm a wizard!"
Zeren Rhoad wakes from his slumber in the back of the wagon he'd hitched a ride on. The young man had filled out after his thefts had gotten him enough coin to buy proper meals and his health had improved accordingly. Slim, sharp-featured, and handsome with short-cropped brown hair and green eyes, still he didn't have much to draw attention to him. That was on purpose, a good criminal didn't try to stand out.
Pulling on the cloak that he'd been using as a blanket Zeren hopped off the back of the wagon. Free was the best way to travel and it'd been easy enough to convince the wagoner to let Zeren ride with him as a conversation partner/'guard.' As if anyone was going to attack a wagon full of chickens! Well, best of luck to the wagoner, but Zeren needed to find his next income source.
It was incredibly unlikely that the trouble that had chased Zeren from Slew would follow him to Mara, but Zeren saw no reason to risk things by turning to theft too soon. Especially since this city might have its own gangs who wouldn't take kindly to a newcomer cutting in on their profits. No, he'd keep his head down for now unless something big came up.
Walking up the city gates Zeren spots a group of wagons set up just outside the city. Spotting people moving towards them he falls in behind them to see what's going on.
As he does so Zeren checks over his belongings. He'd had to spend most of his loot on means to protect himself, and weapons and armor weren't cheap. Still it was worth every coin if they kept him alive. With his rapier at his side, bow on his back, whip hanging from his belt, and studded leather armor Zeren looked the part of a mercenary. He hadn't learned how to use his weapons in the typical manner, instead pickings things up while he'd lived on the streets of Slew. Still, that didn't make him any less dangerous with them.
Overhearing the job offer Zeren spots an opportunity. He'll surely be able to convince one of the other people with the caravan to feed him, so all needs to do is do a convincing job pretending to be a guard (as if this caravan will be attacked) and he not only gets a free ride to Grayhaven he'll be paid for it! Luck is on his side!
Zeren starts when he sees the mouse person carrying a backpack, but just waits in line behind her to sign up. He's seen stranger things. Then she introduces herself as a Wizard. Zeren was always interested in magic, it was a quick route to power, but he'd never had the knack for it. If the two of them were picked maybe some of her talent would rub off on him.
After the mouse person finishes Zeren steps up and offers his hand to shake.
"Zeren Reel, pleasure to meet you."
Zeren's actual last name was Rhoad, but he wasn't sure if the trouble from Slew was following him here
"I'm as deadly with my bow as with my blade and would be a valuable addition to your caravan guards."
As the sun began its morning ascent to give life and light to the land, Zzyzyn too began to rise within the city of Mara. The shafts of the early morning light streamed through the window of his small room within the inn he spent the night at, and he slowly drifted back to consciousness as the light awoke him. Groaning, he sat up in his bed and looked blearily around his room. His attention immediately went to his pack and equipment resting in corner of the small room, and a feeling of slight relief washed through as he saw that it was all still there. His life on the streets had taught him several things, one of which was the fact that you were most likely to be robbed while sleeping.
He absentmindedly runs a hand along his jaw, feeling the mass of short, prickly hairs sprouting from his face. While he didn't know who his father was, Zzyzyn could only assume that his father must have had some impressive facial hair. Zzyzyn's own starting growing quite thickly the past year or so, right around the same time his body shed the vestiges of a scrawny teen and adopted that of a well-muscled man. He assumed that the changes that had come across him so quickly were due to finally having a healthy diet and good exercise by being the groundskeeper for the Temple of Baeldor back in Slew, but a part of him instinctively knew that wasn't the case. One didn't transition from being a malnourished beggar into a powerfully-built man in the space of a year and a half simply because they started eating well.
Now feeling fully awake, he tossed the covers off swings his legs out of bed. What was he going to do today again? Right, he was going to go check out that caravan that needed guarding. Should be a simple enough job. Afterall, he had spent the past 3 months roving around being a caravan guard since his escape from Slew, so this caravan shouldn't be much different than the other ones he had guarded. Realizing that the flier he read yesterday mentioned that the caravan was going to leave in the morning, he quickly starts to pack his things up while getting dressed. He didn't want to miss that caravan before it left!
About ten minutes later, Zzyzyn found himself walking hurriedly down the streets of Mara towards the Hero Gate. As he did, he clung to the sides of the street, and despite his imposing figure, he looked furtively at those that passed him on the streets. He couldn't help but feel slightly anxious as he passed others, an old fear that they were going to attack him for his items like the other beggars would have back in Mara. Old habits died hard.
Once he finally arrives at the Gate, he quickly spots the caravan that must be leaving soon. He spots a small group standing near a dour dwarf and cheerful looking gnome. The group seemed to be comprised of the other would-be guards that wanted to go with the caravan, or at least Zzyzyn assumed so by seeing the weapons and armor they wore. He hesitates in his approach when he notices the towering elephantine figure amongst the guards. What in Baeldor's name was that supposed to be? Maybe one of the giants that lived in the mountains? He had never before seen anything like them, but he continues his approach once he gets over his initial shock at seeing the behemoth.
He cautiously joins with the others standing near the dwarf and gnome. "Is this where I'm suppose to sign up as guard for the caravan?" he rumbles in his deep bass voice, something else that had manifested itself in the past year or so. Noticeably, he stands slightly apart from the others, feeling much more comfortable having some distance between him and the strangers.
For those that turn to look at the newcomer, they see a young human man right around 20 years of age. Powerfully built, the man stands at just over 6 feet tall, and his simple clothing is taught and ill-fitting against his brawny frame, almost like he's had an unexpected growth spurt and hasn't had the opportunity to buy better fitting clothing yet. His rather stern-looking face, while still baring the faintest glimmers of youth, sports thick, dark stubble from a few weeks without shaving. It's the same color of his hair, a dark brown the gleams bronze when the sunlight hit it just right, and it was shorter on the sides and just a bit longer on top. His sun-tanned skin spoke of many days laboring under the harsh glare of the sun, and his dark brown eyes under his brooding brow had a deep intensity to them. One of his meaty hands connected to a well-defined forearm with a sprinkling of dark hairs rested on the head of a warhammer hanging from a loop on his belt. A wicked looking greataxe is strapped across his back, its jagged edges glinting in the morning sun. You get the sense that this was a man that did not smile often as his stern features look warily at each of you in turn.
After looking around for a couple of minutes Tyrgram got the thought in his head that the gathering full of people bearing weapons and the like would be his best bet to find the caravan needing guards. He folded the piece of paper in four and tucked it away underneath the armband of his armour, ready to be pulled out if needed. He had only taken a few steps when his eyes grew wide.
'What manner of beast is this?!' Tyrgram exclaimed when his eyes witnessed the grey elephantine creature. It was big. Too big, with pointy tusks and leathery skin. As if someone, a wizard most likely Tygram wagered, had crossed a giant with an elephant into a gross amalgamation as an affront to the gods.
'Stand down, monster!' Tyrgram grabbed his battleaxe in both hands. 'Leave these innocent people alone and we can both walk away from this.'
Dahâren had been eyeing the elephant-man for a while since the gnome had talked to him. He never seen one before, just heard a couple of stories from the elder about it. But since the giant is somewhat gentle in his speech and everyone else are just looking in awe and not fear, he is not on guard. He should be the last person to judge someone based on his looks, he knows how that feel all to well.
He began observing his environs and saw a varied amount of people of all types plus what seems to be a mouse person on top of a floating backpack? He scratches his head but remember about the story of the forest curse and thinks this must be one of the victims.
Then come the dwarf, he dress up like a knight but act not like one, accusing a gentle giant to be a monster based on how his looks alone and threatening him.
Dahâren, given his personal feelings about people like this, and to prove himself a good caravan guard, the half-elf quickly draws his bow, nocks an arrow, and holds it while pointing it towards the dwarf.
âPlease stand down, sir, the elephant-man is not a monster. The only one threatening here is you.â He says, his voice stern and confident. He is sure he could strike the dwarfâs foot before he ever goes a step.
Riyphou looked up and around when Tyrgram announced the presence of a monster, not immediately aware that he himself was the source of the commotion. It was only after Dahâren confronted the dwarf that Riyphou realized who the dwarf had addressed, and he turned slowly towards Tyrgram, âI apologize good sir,â he says as he had learned that politeness goes a long way with new acquaintances and it isnât the first time that his appearance caused panic or anxiety in people around him.
He remembers the first time the priest had sent him on a farm just outside Mara to fetch fruits and vegetables. The first farm hand he had encountered almost stabbed himself to death on their pitchfork when they scrambled away in panic. âI beg you, donât be afraid. I mean no harm. In fact, I came here to offer my services, to protect the caravan to Grayhaven.â He aims for a calming voice and submissive gestures in an effort to diffuse the emerging conflict as best as he can.
Tyrgram had half a mind to charge the large, grey man-creature with his axe. The other half also wanted to charge but in the opposite direction. In the end the decision was made not by him but the elephant man himself.
'Oh, it speaks.'Tyrgram was surprised at how pleasantly surprised he sounded. He lowered his axe and hostility. He had not had much experience with talking animals, large or small, but anyone capable of speech, polite speech at that, would have to be a civilised fellow.
'Hmm, yes, right...'Tyrgram said. He lowered his hood and cleared his throat with a mighty harrumph that shook a moth out from his clothes. 'Perhaps I was a bit hasty to... Well, you know.'
With his axe in one hand Tyrgram gave the elephant man the courtesy of a bow. 'Apologies.' He said. He pulled a piece of paper with a flourish from underneath his armband and flicked it open with a practised motion of the wrist. 'You said you are looking for a caravan? This one perchance?'
He nearly pushed the paper into the elephant's face. Or as close to the face as Tyrgram could manage given the height difference.
âYou have nothing to apologize for,â replies Riyphou solemnly. âYou arenât the first, and wonât be the last, who react with caution to my imposing stature,â choosing his words carefully. âMy name is Riyphou,â he drones his name with a very nasal pronunciation. âThis is the caravan I was looking for,âRiyphou points out the merchants and other potential guards with his trunk, âIt might be the same one that issued this paper?â
When the crimson-haired dwarf starts brandishing his ax towards the elephantine figure, Zzyzyn instantly becomes alert, and he has his hammer and battered wooden shield out before he can even has time to fully register what was happening. You had to have quick reflexes in the streets of Slew. His inherit jumpiness had saved his life several times over when he was younger.
As quickly as it started, the moment of hostility passed after the giant figure began to speak. Sighing in relief, Zzyzyn starts to return his hammer and shield back to their respective spots on his figure. He was glad that he didn't have to participate in bloodshed this early in the morning.
Turning his attention back to the others in the group, he can't help but be impressed by the elven man's readiness with the bow. Having a fellow guard that was quick with a bow would definitely make for a solid companion to have. Maybe he could... Wait, was that a floating backpack with a mouse on it? Looking confused, Zzyzen peers closer at the miniature figure atop the backpack. To his surprise, he saw that the mouse had clothes on it, an a dagger was even strapped to its back. Could it be one of the mousekin that he heard stories about?
Shaking his head to clear his mind, he shifts his attention back to the group as a whole as he folds his burly arms in front of him. This was probably the most interesting group of caravan guards he had ever seen, though to be fair, he had only seen a handful up to this point. Maybe they were always this diverse. He chooses to stay silent for now, his brooding gaze flitting from one guard to another, sizing them up. Most interesting indeed...
Maxie watched the almost fight from the perch of her floating backpack with interest, but stayed quiet during the encounter. After all, she was the very opposite of imposing! Who among these big folk would listen to a squeaking mouse?
âYou have nothing to apologize for,â replies Riyphou solemnly. âYou arenât the first, and wonât be the last, who react with caution to my imposing stature,â choosing his words carefully. âMy name is Riyphou,â he drones his name with a very nasal pronunciation. âThis is the caravan I was looking for,âRiyphou points out the merchants and other potential guards with his trunk, âIt might be the same one that issued this paper?â
Tyrgram turned his gaze towards the people the elephant mentioned. There was indeed some gathering indicative of what the paper promised. He held his axe once more by the head to use as a walking stick, gave the elephant man an acknowledging nod and headed off into the direction the trunk pointed. Tyrgram had been taught that pointing was rude but he guessed the rules only applied to fingers and less so toproboscides.
Tyrgram had only taken a few steps when a voice rang out to his right.
With the hostility ceased and the matter resolved, Dahâren puts back the arrow and slung the bow back on his shoulder.
âGlad that itâs over.â He said followed by a sigh.
He produced out of his pocket the same paper as the one the dwarven knight has.
âI think youâre in the right place, ser knight.â His tone a bit sarcastical. âBut next time should point those axe in the right direction.â
'What in the blazes?!' Tyrgram shouted, quite startled at the sudden appearance of a man in blue armour holding a bow. 'Where in the Nine Hells did you come from?'
Chaos, that was the cleanest and most specific design that could be given as six strange strangers gathered at Heroes Gate. It was enough that the dour dwarf, the leader of the caravan in question seeking to employ guards, lost just a bit of his dourness to stare, open mouthed, at the lot before him. At his side the gnome shifted, a wide and pleased smile across his slightly wizened face as he stroked along his white beard, quite pleased as he tapped his staff lightly into the ground.
"Well what did I tell you, Duggie? Guards aplenty!" With a flourish the gnome gave a bow to the gathered six, including Riyphou whom he'd spoken to briefly earlier. "I am Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle at your service fair friends!" Findal swept his red hat of his head, pressing the blue feather in the cap against his chest before he swept it right back into place. He slapped the dwarf on the shoulder. "This here is our lovely, if currently speechless, Caravan Master Duggie!"
"Dugal. Stonepick," Dugal ground out. "Not Duggie or any other incessant nickname."
"Got you to actually speak, though, didn't it?"
With an aggrieved sigh Dugal ran his hand over his face, through his beard, and shot a mild-mannered glare in Findal's direction who merely laughed, entirely too pleased with himself. "I'll just go and let the others know we'll depart soon, then. We have plenty of time to talk while on the road!" Findal waved, cheerfully, before he wandered out of the way over back toward the cart with a pleased tune hummed under his breath.
"Right. Well enough of that." Dugal huffed, climbed to his feet, and straightened his leather jerkin as he looked out over at the gathered group. "All of you here for the job? Good." He looked over each of the gathered members in front of him with a narrowed gaze. "Wasn't expecting six of you, but fine. It'll do. You have your own gear I take it?" He didn't wait for a response before he continued, "Also good, I won't be supplying you with anything except two meals a day and your pay at the end of the road. You keep the caravan in one piece, you get your gold at Grayhaven. Twenty days is the expected journey, as long as nothing goes awry." He took another moment to go over each of them in turn, gaze lingering on the smallest group with only the slightest confusion for a moment before he waved aside the sight of the strange mouse-like creature with a mumbled, "Must've drank too much last night."
With a firm stance, a no-nonsense look at everyone, Dugal finished with firmly, "Any questions?"
Seeing him approach with out stretched finger, Maxie twirls her wand, which causes the backpack to spin around a spot a bit in front of it. Meanwhile Maxie spins the opposite direction to keep facing Zeren.
OOC: To help you visualize it, the unseen servant that's wearing the backpack is spinning in place so that Zeren doesn't try reaching though it. I was starting to post that happening, but realized that Maxie would avoid that.
Putting her wand in her mouth for a moment, Maxie take the offered finger in both of her tiny paws to shake it vigorously, at which point Zeren will realize that Maxie is stronger than one would expect for someone her size. (she's MUCH stronger than the unseen servant!)
Taking the wand out of her mouth, she answers in her squeaky voice, "Yes, I'm a Wizard! I''m happy to be working with you! I'm Maxie. What's your name?" Maxie seems full of excitement and energy.

We're heading out of the city and could use someone with your... stature to help us along the way." Riyphou nodded, intrigued by the offer. "I am Riyphou," he rumbled. "I seek passage to Grayhaven, and can... hum... help to protect." The gnome grinned, motioning for Riyphou to join them. "It's a dangerous journey, but with your help, I'm sure we'll make it there in one piece." Riyphou nodded, a sense of excitement building within him.

'Oh, it speaks.' Tyrgram was surprised at how pleasantly surprised he sounded. He lowered his axe and hostility. He had not had much experience with talking animals, large or small, but anyone capable of speech, polite speech at that, would have to be a civilised fellow.
'Hmm, yes, right...' Tyrgram said.
Or as close to the face as Tyrgram could manage given the height difference.

âYou have nothing to apologize for,â replies Riyphou solemnly. âYou arenât the first, and wonât be the last, who react with caution to my imposing stature,â choosing his words carefully. âMy name is Riyphou,â he drones his name with a very nasal pronunciation. âThis is the caravan I was looking for,â Riyphou points out the merchants and other potential guards with his trunk, âIt might be the same one that issued this paper?â

Tyrgram turned his gaze towards the people the elephant mentioned. There was indeed some gathering indicative of what the paper promised. He held his axe once more by the head to use as a walking stick, gave the elephant man an acknowledging nod and headed off into the direction the trunk pointed. Tyrgram had been taught that pointing was rude but he guessed the rules only applied to fingers and less so to proboscides.
Tyrgram had only taken a few steps when a voice rang out to his right.

Ignoring the near-homicide Zeren decides not to draw too much attention to himself.
With luck the antics the others engage in will let him pass unnoticed.
@cyreon
He offers his hand to shake to the elephant-person.
"Pleasure to meet you, fellow guard. I feel silly for packing lightly when I see you've brought a trunk."
A second later Zeren realizes that his mouth hadn't checked with his brain before moving. And to make matters worse he'd made a pun.
Hopefully the elephant-person didn't take offense. Or Zeren could fast-talk his way out of trouble. Or run. He'd prefer not to fight.
@JSenecal
Moving on quickly he moves to mouse person, offering his finger to shake.
"Are you a Wizard?"
"Zeren Rhoad."
Surprised at the mouse person's strength Zeren says his real name.
Darn.
Oh well, that shouldn't matter much.
"So what kind of magic can you do?"
