To apply for the game, please submit a character sheet (as denumerated below), including your roleplaying experience and posting availability. I'm not a harsh judge, but I want to ensure that this game has a lot of frequent, meaty posts, as it is a roleplay-heavy sandbox world that several friends of mine and myself have been working on for some time now - and I am hoping that this particular campaign adds even more to the world of Meer.
This campaign takes place in an alternate world within the universe of Kinloran. If you're not one of those players, that's fine because this is waaaay different. The Elemental Plane of Meer, is a veritable water-world; vast stretches of endless oceans punctuate the overwhelming majority of the realm, and very few land-masses large enough to bolster kingdoms exist. Most of the world's inhabitants reside on small isles protected by these few larger factions, who play at war with one another when not being wracked by the seas suring Storm's Harrowing. In general the political landscape of the realm consists of pirates and raiders who hate to be called pirates, The Philanthropists, and their counterparts - merchants, royal liasons, courtly spies, and assassins who are known far and wide as the (publicly) friendly Trade Federation. You play as a traveler, who has come to the far western reaches of the world, the Shattered Isles. You are in search of something, or someone, or even nothing. Perhaps they have come from a background as a captain who was mutinied against? Perhaps they have been contacted by some deep, ancient spirit, and search answers somewhere - anywhere? Or maybe you are simply passing by, and heard there might be work nearby? The choice is yours to make, as are all the choices... In Meer Ragnarök.
The sun, Lia Fail, hangs high in the sky. You've recently moored a tattered (if still existing) rowboat from weeks of sailing through the sixty long days of Storm's Harrowing on a small island in the Shattered Isles called Port Nevara. The islanders cling to a lazy summertime atmosphere, with sailors and passerby merchants drunkedly laughing and jeering as the ships slowly weigh their anchors and bring in their hauls. It is now Gaonda, the fifth and final day of the second week of High Fail. The blazing heat burns hottest, and the island crops are sewn and grown over two-hundred-forty days of blissful respite. There is not much here on the island. An old lady named Olga runs the small farm, where she makes enough to sustain the small populace of the island. Scary Terry runs the Inn, the Neverdry Flask, which surprisingly has ample and cost-effective rooms for adventurers and travelers. The Trade Federation headquarters lie atop a small hill, and it is run by an elusive figure, whom you've never seen out and about. Across the bank, Skull Cove can be spotted a mere two-hour's travel, from where it's said a small band of The Philanthropists run their raids. Whatever you've arrived at port for, you're going to need some coin to get started, and probably a new ship. Perhaps the Neverdry Flask serves a patron who has some work they don't want to do, or need help with?

Looking for TWO SEPARATE PARTIES with 3-5 players each. This is the first thread/party. The other has been posted HERE, and you may choose to join that one if you like. The two parties will be in the same game!! You may meet each other several times. You may become tentative allies, fast friends, or even bitter rivals. Which party you choose does NOT predetermine the story whatsoever, and the beginnings of both campaigns have the same potential to be either entirely identical or drastically different. It is unlikely you will not be approved as long as you are willing to participate on a regular basis, and post a decent amount of content (2-5 sentences average). This is a game with much more focus on creating your own narrative and roleplaying heavily with wildly varying characters and kingdoms and factions in a fully screw-with-able world, with less of an emphasis on combat and abilities. I look forward to all the appuhlicayshuns! Let's have some fun!!!
Background: Varet is the younger son of a moderately wealthy merchant in a small provincial town of the Khybrus Empire. His friends got him involved in a group of wannabe intellectuals who met in taverns and cafes to discuss the politics of the day and, in time, their thoughts turned to how the Empire might be ‘improved’ by greater decentralisation of power. This attracted the attention of the authorities, who arrested several of Varet’s friends; Varet and two others were able to escape on a merchant ship, and spent months running from island to island before finally heading off in a rowboat to end any chance of being tracked (he hopes). He now wants only to make a new life for himself in the outside world, doing whatever his skills allow to earn him a living. He’s also hoping to find the two friends who escaped as well, if they managed to stay free.
Roleplay experience: I’ve been playing DnD for almost a year, having discovered it through Critical Role. I’ve been playing in two PbP games on DnDBeyond, one of which ended recently, and in two Discord/voice games since August.

When Seldor was young, he fought in a war against an empire that was moving to conquer the small nation he lived in. He wasn't the most skilled swordsman on the battlefield, but his skill with the arcane and the ability to inspire his comrades made him a valuable asset to his platoon during the war. His nation's army fought valiantly and it looked like they might actually beat back the larger empire. But the empire wasn't going to be denied. They brought out horrible new weapons that devastated the armies of Seldor's home. That brought an end to the war, as the small kingdom that Seldor lived in had no choice but to surrender and be absorbed by the empire. Rather than bend the knee to the people he spent years fighting against, Seldor fled. He became a man without a home, doing whatever he needed to do to get by, all the while hiding his grief behind a confident, joking demeanor.

Thrash is an orange and black colored tabaxi. He was taken from his family at a very young age by poachers hunting exotic animals for trade. For most of his childhood he was traded between exotic goods dealers before the ship he was on was raided by pirates. Much to the suprise of the pirate captain, when the chains containing the tabaxi were damaged in the fight... Thrash aided the pirates in overthrowing the ship. Afterwards he served on the ship under the pirate captain until a terrible storm resulted in him being thrown into the sea clinging to some debris... a few days later he was plucked from the ocean and took the first job he could.. eventually the capiton learned of his past and Thrash fled the ship in a rowboat to prevent being locked up again... Thrash has vowed never to be chained up again.
Here are my rolled stats for whichever character I make!

Friggin' amazing!! So right now, story-wise, Varet would likely know that at the time of his "treason" the Khybrus Empyrium is preparing for war with Kamildorran the Third, the wild kingdom to the North controlled by one of the Six Dread Skeletons: King Gazoff. The son of a wealthy merchant, your face would likely be known to anyone important locally within the Trade Federation. The Shattered Isles are a hotly contested area; Khybrus once owned the islands, and has held a very loose grip over them ever since. Only one of the isles, Port Sarim, remains loyal to the Empyrium. Over the other, the TF and The Philanthropists battle for control, with the northern territories mostly, and some entirely, under the buccaneers' control.

Horrible new weapons? A terrifying force? Sounds like Seldor's little island was ravaged by Dread King Gazoff of Kalimdorran III, and his armies of hellions and monsters. One thing to note about elves is while they aren't unheard of, they're rarely ever seen. The only known surviving elves are the Saedh-Aelle, who live deep underwater a la Justice League Atlantis (and it is called Atlantis lol). Very regal, honor-bound, isolationist people. While slavery is actually very uncommon in Meer, Atlantian society is entirely built upon it. Think Athens, but with Sparta's reliance on slavery to literally function at a basic level. Your Saedh-Aelle parent would have likely had to leave behind Atlantian society to have you - or the alternative, the human parent was a sexual thrall and escaped while pregnant with Seldor.
Backstory: Having grown up in a fishing village, Alex is no stranger to boats or the water. Alex joined a large fishing crew at the age of 15 and spent months at a time on the water going port to port with their catches. After years with the same crew Alex decided to try a new ship and found a home on the Sunbeam with captain Shamus Needler. The Sunbeam was an older 3 mast merchant ship. After several years without major incidents the Sunbeam came across the wrong pirates. After days of fighting and being chased the Sunbeam came to her final rest miles of the coast of a larger island. Alex was thrown from the ship mid battle and floated to shore. Alex awoke to debris from the Sunbeam scattered along the coast. After a few days of wondering, Alex found himself among the civilized world again. Alex is still looking for a new home aboard a ship and the pirates who sank the Sunbeam.

Backstory: At the peak of his physical condition, tall, broad shouldered, with Auburn hair and tanned skin, Ve looks like the poster child for a sailing advert. This man, trained in Heaven's Palladia, has spent the past two years and change braving the frosty Varlstula alongside some of his fellow Wanderers. Having been given the order to return from his tour, Ve found himself devoid of cause and, for the time being, decided to take to some wandering of his own to find spiritual guidance in this strange, strange world.
I didn't know that Elves were isolationists in the world of Meer. If that's the case then I will say that Seldor's mother was also a Bard (maybe less combat oriented than him) who managed to seduce his Saedh-Aelle father with her good looks and natural charm into leaving Atlantis and having a child with her. And I'd probably say that Seldor takes more after his human mother than his regal, Atlantian father.

As elves are isolationist, would it make more sense if Varet was human? What non-human species are common, and able to prosper, in the Empire?
(( It wouldn't make a significant difference, since racism isn't really a thing in Meer. There are many different kinds of people and folk, and generally they are not discriminated against. The Khybrus Empyrium is a different story, however - not to spoil anything. But you wouldn't be out of place as a male aelle on the surface. Female aelle are uncommon, but males... you can expect, as a commoner in Meer, to probably encounter one or two male aelle in your life. ))
Thrash will look up to the sky, shielding his eyes from the bright sunlight with his large claws and taking in a deep breath in through his nose and out through his mouth. "Aaaahhhh, smells like opportunity!" the large tabaxi will say to himself before making his way to the Flask for a drink. "What better place to find a new job than the pub.." Thrash will say himself with a large tooth grin. The lumbering tabaxi will then make his way across the harbor, his large uncovered chest exposing a variety of scars from battle past.

Seldor enters the Neverdry Flask. He is a Half-Elf in his late twenties. He's wearing a green waistcoat with a long-sleeved brown shirt underneath. It looks fairly rough, as if he's been wearing it for a while and hasn't been able to take care of it outside of casting Prestidigitation on it every morning. He's also wearing grey trousers and brown leather boots. He'll look around the room and see if anyone needs someone to do a job for them.

Sitting by himself at a table in the Neverdry Flask, for the third day in a row, Varet notices the newcomer and gives a slight, almost inaudible grunt of surprise. How long had it been since he had seen another with elven blood? He casts his eyes over the man, trying to get any sense of who he is or where he has come from: Perception 22.
No matter what, this is probably his best chance of a decent conversation today, so he raises his hand slightly to catch the half-elf's eye, then motions to one of the empty seats across the table, inviting him to sit.
(Varet is a half-elf in his mid-twenties, wearing slightly shabbier traveller's clothes, in various shades of brown, but a bit cleaner. Though he's been sat at the same table all day, he's taking his time with a very weak ale and picking at the remains of a meal.)

He's also wearing grey trousers and brown leather boots. He'll look around the room and see if anyone needs someone to do a job for them.

Alex does not know for sure if Capt Shamus survived the fight or not. She does go back to the beach every now and then to see if anything washes up.

Seldor walks over to the Half-Elf at the table and takes a seat. "Good afternoon. Is there something I can help you with?"
