Don't go into the wild unprepared! Just because your family scrounged enough gold together to buy you a sword doesn't mean you know how to use it! Don't be lured by tales of heroes and might. Those tales told around campfires to keep out the night. Listen instead to the yips on the wind. The crack of branches at night and the ravens caw with the sunrise. They will tell you when to be prepared!
And prepared you shall be..."
Blobbin, an unusually small halfling, rotund and well worn pops another olive in his mouth, gets up from his stool by the fire and looking around says...
"So who of you dreams of being an adventurer?"
Blobbin's adventurer camp is a training program for new players. I've been running Parth's adventurer camp and had gotten more requests for folks to join so I've started another camp. The 2 campaigns are not related in terms of story but I am going to use some of the same settings because they make for good training.
Blobbin was once a mighty adventurer, who struck out from the comforts of home to help in defeating a great evil. After the evil was defeated he returned home in hopes of resuming his happy old life, filled with merriment, food and good simple company. He was content for a while. But the itch for adventure never left his bones. He started sneaking away to seek out trouble and his clandestine trips from home started growing longer and more frequent. One day he just never went back home. He had found a nice plot of land in the hills in an area troubled with nuisances of one kind or another. With his treasures from past adventures, bought it up and decided to start a training program for others seeking adventure. At first none came to his camp. Nobody in the area believed one of his... stature, had done all he'd claimed. But after frequent, and sizable donations to certain causes and orders in the area, and after one particularly nasty incident with a bugbear, the name Blobbin became known.
Slowly, young ones seeking adventure started coming to hear his tales and train at his camp.
Now he is happy again being able to live out his adventurous spirit through his charges. Blobbin's Adventurer Camp, or just, The Camp as it's known by most, has become the place to seek out for the very best training. It's also well known that if you are being harassed by bandit or creature, Blobbin rarely turns down a request for help.
(You can kind of think of him as what may have happened to Samwise many years later)
I would prefer using basic races and classes since this is geared towards new players, however, I will consider other requests. If you are an experienced player you are welcome to join and lend a helping hand.
The whole purpose of this campaign is for folks to get their feet wet, so to say, have fun and learn how to play. To that end, we all need to have patience, be kind, and lend a helping hand where we can. Feel free to ask questions, or for clarification if you don't understand something. Cheers and welcome!
Limit of 6 players. More than that gets a little tedious in PbP.
Please use standard array, or quick build, for character creation. (if you don't know what that means, that's ok, send me a message)
To keep things moving if we are waiting on someone for an action for more than 24 hrs I reserve the right to take an action on their behalf.
I'm a make the players heroes kind of DM. Not that I'm going to give you all magical items after your first victory, but I want to set the stage for a story you can succeed in. I also reward good play in general, good role playing, cleverness and following character traits. I can also be a little devious and intentionally misleading to test you. The way I reward good game play is with stuff like advantage rolls, automatic DC checks, and yes, occasionally good (maybe magic) items :)
I got lucky with Parth's camp just letting people post to join but I'd like to make sure we have a good mix here so please message me your race and class of choice. I'll send the campaign links out and we can get started.
Blobbin is sitting on his favorite stool in front of his firepit, mug in hand, in the midst of merrymaking with some fine friends when he notices a rather large (to him) Minotaur walking into the main gate.
"My my my, what have we here? You're walking in with a sense of purpose so I don't need 3 guesses to know you're not lost." He eyes you up and down paying close attention to your axes and says "Ah, a young adventurer perhaps? Come closer to the fire and tell us who you are?"
The stout Minotaur, less than five feet tall with long brown hair enters through the gate. She eyes the various facilities of the camp. She walks forward with a large greataxe slung across her shoulder and approaches the halfling by the fire. She extends her free hand and says,
"Uhm...are you Blobbin? My name's Tauriel Oxford and I'm looking to become a proper adventurer. My village supported my dream and they even helped me get all this gear, you see. I know the world is a dangerous place, but I hear your camp is one of the best around for training."
"Ahh, Tuariel. I am indeed Blobbin and I'm glad to hear my reputation proceeds me." He struggles to stand up from his stool and weaving slightly offers his hand.
"We were in the midst of some merrymaking. Come, come, sit by the fire. I had received news of some new charges but weren't expecting them so soon. Perhaps you weren't one of the ones mentioned. No matter, no matter. Please join us and I'll make the intoductions"
As he weaves his way back to his stool he abruptly stops and shaking his head says "How terribly rude of me. You must be hungry and thirsty. Let me offer you a cup and a plate"
Tauriel takes a seat near Blobbin and replies, "Oh yes please. I've traveled quite a ways to get here and I'm afraid there weren't many accommodating places to eat."
Oslamir wanders into the camp, at first unsure if he is in the correct place, until he notices a Halfling and a Minotaur sitting by a fire. "This has to be the right place," Osamir thinks to himself. With confidence and a smile, he approaches the pair and introduces himself.
"Greetings, my name is Oslamir. I was told an adventurer training camp operates in this area. Would this be the right place?" Turning to look the Minotaur up and down Oslamir says with a smile, "Aren't you a little short for a Minotaur?"
Sinjin blunders his way into the camp. He hoped this was the place, it sure did sound like it. The stubby Gnome looked around, noticing tents, people, and ah! A firepit. He makes his way to the pit, careful to keep his whits about him. Darkness was always a disadvantage to Sinjin, even with his seeing orb. He came to rest by the fire, planting his quarterstaff in the dirt and leaning on it to support himself. Looking across the pit and observing the three standing there. 'What an odd bunch this is. Should be fun!' The old gnome thought to himself, cracking a bit of a smile.
"By the gods I hope this is the adventurers camp, or else I would be looking pretty stupid 'ere" Sinjin said out loud and took the orb from in front of his eye and sliding it into the pocket of his robe.
Tauriel looks up at Oslamir. "And aren't you a little rude for a human?" she retorts with a pout. "For your information I drank my milk every day and became strong enough to work the fields as well as any ox. And that's all I could ever ask for."
Oslamir responds with a chuckle, “It was not my intention to offend you my friend. I’ve only heard stories of your kind and every one portrayed your people as, well .... I guess that just proves you can’t believe everything you hear. I came here with the hope of seeing new places and people and I would say today has provided both.”
Turning his attention to the new arrival, “Hello friend, my name is Oslamir and you are...?”
"Well I'm Sinjin, Nice to meet you Olsamir. I'm judging by that name you're an eeeh.. " the gnome went back into his pocket, pulling the small orb back out and squinting through it. "Half elf?" He asked and pinned the orb between his cheek and brow, holding it there like a monicle.
"I'm Tauriel. Pleasure to make your acquaintance," says the Minotaur extending her hand to both men. "Mr. Sinjin do you happen to be...a dwarf? I'm sorry I've been secluded to my family's farm most of my life so I'm not all to familiar with the outside world."
He shook her hand, suprisingly strong for a frail looking old man. "Nay lass, I be a Gnome. Dwarves are stockier." He explained with a little smile. "Oh! And a dwarf would be drunk off his mind!" Sinjin chuckled a bit. "Don't worry though Tauirel, if we happen to remain in the same party, you can ask me anything you need. " Sinjin rested both his hands on the quarterstaff.
“Well then let’s see... a Halfling, Gnome, Minotaur and Half Elf all walk up to a fire pit... This sounds like the beginning of an epic tale or perhaps a short poem. Either way, I look forward to whatever comes next!”
ooc: Sorry to start and then leave you guys hanging last night. It was in the negatives here in New York and I had to deal with some frozen pipes in my bathroom. Fortunately nothing ruptured but it took me a couple hours to get them heated up enough to get water back in there.
Blobbin and his 2 friends continue drinking with half smiles on their faces observing the conversation. Finally Blobbin breaks out laughing... "Hahaha, indeed Oslamir it does sound like the start of a great tale. hehehe, I do in fact know a tale of a Gnome, a Halfling, a Minotaur and a Half Elf. The tale starts when the gnome was just knee-high to a grasshopper..."
One of Blobbins friends clears his throat loudly. Blobbin, looking somewhat embarrassed smiles at his friend "You are indeed right Master Sledge. I'm going off spinning tales before my duties as a host. Forgive me my friends. This elvish wine is going right to my head!" He winks at his elvish friend.
"I am indeed Blobbin and you are all in the right place" He rings a little bell that's sitting on the table beside the wine bottle. "Food and drink will be served to you all shortly, but in the meantime allow me to make introductions"
"My friend here who so kindly reminded me of my duties is Master Sledge. Our Elven friend who is trying to make me forget my duties by plying me with wine is Fyr'ta. They have both come by different roads to discuss a similar problem. We will get to that shortly, but as it turns out they are in need of some help"
Feeling quiet proud of himself for remember his politeness, Blobbin smiles at all his guests and pops another olive in his mouth from the tray of cheese and olives sitting on the table.
Blobbins property has the feel of a well appointed country gentleman estate perched on the top of a gentle hill. The gate that you all entered through was well wrought iron with intricate scrollwork with brass lamp post on either side. There is a large 2 story stone house, a much smaller house built into the side of the hill and a couple scattered outbuilding. For those of you with decent darkvision you can see the estate extends down the far side of the hill into farmland and fenced pastures with 2 large barns and more smaller outbuildings. In a fenced area beside one of the barns is an area with training dummies, targets and assorted obstacles.
Around the firepit are an assortment of chairs and benches of various sizes as well as a table beside Blobbin with a wine bottle and a tray of cheese and olives, a small bell and a folded note.
Sinjin laughed "Sounds like a great tale Blobbin! Any tale with a gnome has to be good. Heheh!" He listened to the halfling intently. " What kind of help do your friends need?" He asked and put less weight on his stick. Sinjins eye was getting tired so he put his orb back into his pocket.
"Well, young master gnome, Fyr'ta was just telling of of some trouble he's been having delivering his goods. If you will Fyr?"
Fyr'ta leans in and says "Yes. As I was saying, we've had some of the western trade roads collapse quiet unexpectedly. We have had to make very long detours that put our caravans at risk of thieves. Many of our shipments have gone missing. While the missing shipments are indeed a concern I'd like to find the cause of these collapses." He nods to Master Sledge "I had not realized until arriving that Sledge here has not received our last 2 shipments."
While he is talking 3 young humans arrive carrying 2 small tables, more wine and plates of cheese, bread, and vegetables. They are set down in easy reach of the party members.
Sledge nodding says "Yes, yes. I see. I had come seeking help to search for the missing shipments not knowing their fate. I had not realized the trade road was in jeopardy. This is most troubling indeed"
Blobbin smiles broadly, extending his arms "Well, isn't it fortuitous that I have new charges who may be just perfect to investigate such a mystery!"
Don't go into the wild unprepared! Just because your family scrounged enough gold together to buy you a sword doesn't mean you know how to use it! Don't be lured by tales of heroes and might.
