Recruiting players for a story set in Waterdeep, characters starting at level 1. The story is something I've been working on, but obviously set in the FR. I tend to write stuff that has more of a noirish murder mystery kind of feeling to it than the typical fantasy story, and that's what I want to go for here. I have access to the core books plus Xanathar's Guide, so that's what we'll use for this campaign. I want to use the dice roller and tags provided here as well for easy reference for everyone (especially me).
Some background on me: I have a lot of RP experience but it's been a long time since I had any kind of active game in any forum. I'm currently running another game on another forum, but it's moving kind of slowly, and I'm looking for as much PBP experience as I can get. I'm more interested in good RP and character development and setpieces than I am doing any of the super advanced combat tactics stuff, so that's what this game is going to focus on. If that's interesting to you, please PM me your character sheet and a little bit of backstory. I'm not looking for any specific party makeup or anything, I can make anything work. I want your sheet in DNDBeyond just to be clear.
Also in the interest of full disclosure, I am a professor at a University in northeastern Pennsylvania and am currently working on launching a D&D group for students at an area high school who have struggled with a variety of issues. The purpose of this game is to help me up my own game so I can train my volunteers more effectively. But I'm also fine with this going on more or less indefinitely and spinning this campaign into a new story, if people are having fun. In other words, I plan to be here for the long haul.
Once I get a few people interested we'll start up, and if people want to jump in along the way, I'm fine with that too - if you're reading this in the future and everything is going great and you want to jump in, please message me. I try to be as player friendly as possible. Looking forward to playing with everyone.
I have a rogue character that I've wanted to drop into something like this. Not super combat focused, so a city adventure could work. I'll make up the character sheet in a bit and edit it into the post.
Quick backstory for him: His family was traveling through the FR and they stopped in Waterdeep to see what all the fuss was about. From a small gnome village in the woods it was a very new experience for them. Staying in the in Usulwas, one night, sneaking down to grab some sweets from the kitchen when a fire broke out in the Inn. Because he was already downstairs he was able to escape, but the rest of his family was not so lucky. In the years that have passed he's grown up on the streets, in and out of orphanages, learning to keep himself alive by his wits and stealth.
here is my orc fighter. He was captured my a band of mercenaries hired to remove his clan when he was a young child. The leader of the mercenaries raised him as his own and now he works odd jobs out of wateedeep, taking the jobs that are so dangerous that anyone with half a brain would know to walk away from... but Crush isn't known for his smarts...
I was just going to edit the OP to say that my copy of Volo's Guide came earlier than I thought it would, so races from that book are allowed - so Crush is good now that I have a reference for Orcs. Welcome!
It is pretty easy, PM me and I can help you. It allows you to edit any of the character sheets people upload and you can see all their abilities and stuff. you dont want to post it in the recruitment thread though be cause then anyone could join.
Recruiting is closed. If you've been in touch with me about joining the campaign, you're good. We have a big party to start with but in time, spots might open. I wasn't anticipating such a reaction. More information coming - we'll use this as the RP thread.
Our adventure begins in one of the less desirable parts of Waterdeep, in a hostel called The Saving Point, a small place for traveler's to rest their head for as long as they need, kept safe by the reputation of its caretakers, Mother and Father.
The Saving Point is almost as far from the lap of luxury as one can get. It is a single great room with a small food prep and storage area in the back. The room is roughly 40' x 40', with sleeping arrangements of all shapes and sizes jammed in with just a narrow amount of space between each bed, cot, and pile of straw for its guests to - kind of, sort of - move past each other. There are more travelers than there are spaces available, but for one bronze piece a night, it's a hard deal to beat. Some of the people staying here are adventures well past their prime, recovering from another bad experience in the Undermountain. Father tends to them, moving gingerly through the rows of beds with a large pitcher of water, probably with a few drops of a healing potion and some crushed goodberries added for good measure. Others are young families passing through the city, looking for a more permanent residence. Mother sits telling a story about her younger days to a pair of little girls who are completely enthralled with her story. There are several other people who are here and who want no one, including you, to know their business, and both Mother and Father respect their privacy. And then there's you.
It is early in the day, the children have eaten and the adventurers who were up late...adventuring are starting to stir. People are getting ready to start their day.
How did your characters end up at The Saving Point? What are they thinking and feeling in this moment?
Alexandra is no stranger to The Saving Point, over the years she has stayed here many nights listening to tales of adventures before packing up again the next day. Last night, after making her rounds and selling the last of this month's charcoal to Mother and Father, she paid for a plain cot in the corner of the room and settled in. The sound of people and children stirring and a sharp pang from her stomach bring her out of slumber and back into the waking world.
Once the children have all eaten, Alexandra makes her way to the little kitchen in the back to get a bite to eat for herself.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Usul has been around this area of Waterdeep for a number of years. He's been one of the boys and girls that Mother and Father have fed from time to time. This time he had claimed a corner under one of the tables to sleep. As he wakes up he whispers some noises into his pocket, stands up, stretches, and looks around the room. Today is another day to either try to entertain some people on the streets with an illusion or two for some copper, or perhaps find some pockets to put make a bit lighter. Just enough to get some bread and cheese. If he can add to his small savings to get out of this town all the better. Though before heading out he'll look around to see if there is anyone new in today that might prove interesting.
PERCEPTION: (assuming we're using point buy for stats) 25
Crush makes his way into the saving point, his loud heavy footsteps only made louder by the clanking of his chainmail and the flail swaying on his belt. Having just finished another job that payed more in scars than gold coins, he makes his way through the room and collapses in a pile of furs in the corner. Within moments of laying down and wiping the dirt and blood from his thick hairy mutton chops, he is bombarded by children. Being a fairly regular guest to The Saving Point, they are very familiar with this orc and begin climbing all over him like a large pointy jungle-gym. After a few seconds of reluctance, the orc finds himself tossing children high into the air and lifting them up and down like dumbbells. Although trying his best not to smile, he always enjoys the looks of amazement the kids give him and is always willing to take the time to show off his strength. After a while, the orc will eventually grunt that he is finished and try his best to relax and get some rest on the makeshift bed.
Sendon has been awake for several hours, but is still sitting on his bed, eyes down, trying not to attract the attention of the others in the room. He clutches his coin purse tightly in his hands, and from time to time he opens it and checks, but it's still empty each time. This was Sendon's first night in Waterdeep; he made it in through the city gates last night, shortly before sunset. He then spent a couple of hours wandering through the streets, unsure what to do with himself, expecting to be set upon by gangs or other predators at any moment. When challenged by a city guardsman as to what he was doing out and about so late, Sendon answered that he was looking for a place to stay, and was directed, firmly but not unkindly, to The Saving Point, where he spent his last copper piece on a bed for the night. I suppose I should be grateful the guard didn't arrest me, he thinks. Or, perhaps that would have been better. Still, the day is young. He sighs, and once again checks his coin purse. Still nothing. He puts it away and, as he does so, he checks the inside of his robe, as has become his habit. Then he stifles another sigh and looks around the room. How does one earn a living in this city anyway?
Usul would notice a very nervous Sendon almost obsessively checking his coin purse.
As Alexandra, Usul, and Crush are all regulars at this hostel and are familiar with Mother and Father, they have free run of the place, more or less. Not quite employees, but Mother's memory is going sometimes and Father's back and knees sometimes gives him problems and they are more than happy to rely on these people they have practically raised to assist them.
Veryes had been a few days in The Saving Point. Having worked out a loose arrangement of plucking a few notes to accompany Mothers stories in exchange for a small pile of straw and an occasional meal. Being less than 3 feet tall she doesn't take up much space or eat much food. She loves hearing Mothers tales and always has an ear out for a story any of the adventurers bring in. When she isn't accompanying Mother she is often seen sitting on her straw, writing in her little book and chewing on the end of her pen. Sometimes she gets so enthralled in her writing that she accidentally puts the wrong side of her pen in her mouth and has a semi-permanent ink stain on the right corner of it. Her lute, book, ink and pen are her most valued possessions and are never out of her hands or safely tucked away.
Aria awakens from her sleep to the sounds of the children playing with Crush. Tucked away in a corner, she sits up and says to herself These people were very hospitable. They really are good people here. She stands up, brushes herself off and quickly does a few stretches. She pulls out a small notebook that was tucked away in her pouch and scribbles down something quickly before placing it back. She's only been at the Saving Point overnight but she has heard of the place before as many adventurers have used it as place to make a quick stop along the way. Except Aria isn't sure where she's going or if this will be a quick stop. She sits back down, back against the corner of the wall.. eyes fixated at the entrance.

Usul will start the day approaching Mother, saying "Hey Ma, as always, thanks for the spot on the floor. The streets aren't always safe for little people at night."somewhat bashfully, adding "Before I head out to try to find some coin, have you anything that needs be done around here that I can help with?"
Gatterson Geiger Roe jolts awake and immediately clamps a hand over his own mouth. As if to continue the conversation with himself, his stomach gurgles rather loudly. Worried that someone overheard, he looks around for a moment before getting to his feet. To no one in particular, he says, "Uh... Kobolds. Nasty things. They steal your food, but only when you're dreaming. They invade the mind... I believe they do the devil's work. Anyway- time to... go find a job to do... or something."
And with that, Gatterson--Gatt, for short--is awake and ready for the day.
