“Prophecies, saving the world and helping people is for sentimental fools. Coin is where the real power lies…” – Pike Brickbane
The city of Dun Farum is situated in in the northern region of The Empire. To its north lies the White Mountains, to the southeast lie the Great Plains and the Brackwood forest lies to the southwest. It’s a major trading hub for the region, but its real wealth and power comes from its access to rare ores from the mountains, its easy access to the Underdark and the fact that mages claim that the barrier between Planes is weaker here. The city acts as a lightning rod for those wishing to study the arcane, for good, evil or profit. Thriving businesses, schools and independent mages utilise the resulting abundance of magical resources and energies to generate much wealth in the city.
But this is the story of only half the city. Whilst the Mages’ Quarter and Merchants’ Quarter bustle with prosperity, “Dogtown” is little more than a slum of those who have struggled and failed to make it big and those who never had a chance. Poverty and crime are rife. This is where the Silver Blades come in. The Silver Blades are a criminal syndicate run by the elusive and shadowy “Godfather”. They threaten and extort. They steal and they cheat. They blackmail and kidnap.
You are one of the “fix teams” of the Silver Blades. You’re a rung above the standard enforcers – entrusted with more difficult jobs than shaking down shopkeepers for protection money. You’re expected to be sneaky, smart and capable as well as tough. Your handler is Pike Brickbane. He is your line to the Silver Blades and the Godfather, gives you your assignments and, most importantly, gives you your pay. And he has a job for you.
This campaign aims to provide something a little different to the “hero’s journey” we all know and love. The goal is to provide a chance for characters who are nastier and meaner to shine and thrive. If you want to play a “Good” alignment character, you’re welcome to, but you’ll need a convincing in-character reason to keep working with the Silver Blades through all their nasty schemes and you may find it a tougher roleplaying experience.
The campaign will be set in and around the homebrew setting of the city of Dun Farum but will not use any non-standard rules or game features. The game will, initially at least, be episodic in nature – based around jobs given to your fix team by Pike. You might need to steal a treasure from a mage noble, perform an assassination or find blackmail material. Missions will typically go better if you spend some time performing recon and forming a plan instead of charging in swinging a warhammer.
This doesn’t mean everyone needs to be a Rogue – the normal balance of classes will still help you as there will be plenty of combat and the magic permeating Dun Farum means magic users will doubtless prove useful as well.
On a practical level, I expect to keep playing with daily postings from myself and all players. Naturally, real life gets in the way from time to time and I don’t intend to be super-strict, but I expect players to let me know if they’ll be away for more than a day or two so we can pause or temporarily GMPC their character etc.
If this sounds like something you’d be interested in, then please leave a brief description of your character (including name, race and class), along with your attributes (or a link to your character sheet), a short background, including a description of your relationship to the Silver Blades (How long have you worked for them? What’s your motivation for working for them? Any interesting history with them? Etc). You can choose to do a point buy for your stats or roll for them (4d6 and drop the lowest) in this thread. Characters will start at Level 1 and milestone progression will be used. I’m happy for you to take some (reasonable) liberties defining the setting in defining your backstory – I find giving players some input to setting often leads to a richer backdrop. I’m happy for you to draw from all official sources.
I intend to leave this thread open for a day or two and then start the campaign with the players I have chosen to play with. I intend to play with 4-6 players. I will prioritise players who:
have a persistent post history
engage with the setting in their backstory
have a writing/playstyle I think will gel with my GM style
post earlier in this thread
I recognise my post-history on these forums is limited, but I’ve been playing and GMing RPGs for the best part of a decade but now struggle to find time to frequently play irl and so would like to give pbp a try.
quick backstory: Laza was born during the darkest part of the darkest eclipse in the last many many years. He was also the only one of his litter to survive. This seems to have marked him, as he is pure black in fur, though his eyes are a light grey color. He started to develop a talent for the arcane at a young age, which further isolated him from his community. Running away in his early/mid teens he found a group of Silver Blades traveling through the area. They recognized his talents and put him to work.
Living his life in Dogtown, Brayton found himself working as a blacksmith under Duwane ForgeHammer during the day and being a bouncer at night. Putting his life on the line fighting with drunks over at the Dust Glow Inn. Barely scraping enough coin together to provide for his family and working himself into an early grave. One day he was given a job to do on behalf of the Silver Blades. Something that seemed to fit with his skills; roughing up some people wasn’t great, but the coin was good enough to buy his loyalty. His Wife and daughter have learned not to ask what he does all day, but live comfortably with the lifestyle he now provides.
Ripi was freed when his master a leader of one the Silver Blades enemy gangs. Arron a member of the Silver Blades took Ripi to train and then he was able to rise through the ranks and eventually join one of the famed "Fix Teams". He has been with the Silver blades for the past 3-4 years to finally become part of a fix team. Ripi's motivation is simply to get better and better and to learn as much as he can.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
P: The Traveling Ward: Natural Napalm Enthusiast. (AURYN: The Hunt For The Last Unicorn.)
Rothnar was born in another city in the southern part of the Empire, unader another name. Born in a wealthy merchant family his father and uncle ran the bussiness. Unfortunately they were more succesful than a rival family and they hired assasins to take them out. Rothnar was saved thanks to a friend of the family who took him to the north, to Dun Farum. Seeing that bounty hunters were after his trail, he was forced to leave the boy with some coins in Dnu Farum's streets.
Rothnar managed to survive. A quiet and rude boy he made a name for himself among the rest of the street dogs and it wasn't too long after he catched the attention of the Silver Blades. He started as a errant boy, then as simple enforcer. But he was good in one thing- Finding the ones that tried to hide from the Blades. He didn't explain to anyone that he was applying the same methods he saw the bounty hunters used against his family long ago, during the months that they were pursued and then when he fled to Dun Farum. He gained the trust of Pike Brickbane and now he counts on him to make more difficult jobs.
He want to perfect his skills so he can find the merchant family that killed his family and take revenge on them. And the ones that pursued and killed their family. What he doesn't know is that the other family hired the Silver Blades to do the job.
Backstory: When she was just a young child 'Harpy' was discovered in the White Mountains and taken as a slave to Dun Farum. There she was sold and resold over the years from one master/mistress to the next. Sometimes she was kept as a menial household servant or a glorified messenger while others took her as a companion or just curiosity to show off to their friends. As Harpy grew she was passed from one household to the next picking up skills along the way until she eventually wound up with Pike Brickbane who recognized her potential. Under his tutelage, she was trained to serve his needs until she was old enough and skilled enough to be placed in a Silver Blades crew.
Backstory: Nyx is a native to the Dogtown of Dun Farum. She doesn't know much about her parents, except that her mother went insane and tried to kill her after her father left. Nyx's older brother, Erebus, saved her from this, and began working jobs with the Silver Blades, earning enough money to scrape by. Nyx began work with the Blades at the age of ten. Her small size allowed her to slip into hard-to-reach places, so she was usually assigned to thieving operations. She and her brother began to slowly climb the ranks of the Silver Blades and were eventually put on a larger merchant house hit. The crew they were working with was relatively large, and Nyx and her brother were out of place among the brutes and killers in the group. Regardless of this, the hit went exactly as it was supposed to, and the crew got away with a substantial amount of gold. However, the leader of the crew, a wiry human by the name of Brom Glowtaker, wasn't satisfied with the cut of gold he would be earning. A few hours after the hit, Brom gave the location of the crew's safehouse to a rival gang, the Copper Bloods. This rival gang made short work of Brom's (former) crew. And although Nyx was able to hide, she was helpless to save her brother from the hands bloodthirsty Dragonborn. After narrowly escaping death, Nyx trailed Brom as he returned to the Godfather with his gold. She tried to kill him before he could reach safety, but Brom was far more capable with a knife than Nyx was, and he left her bleeding out in an alley. Nyx's only motivation for staying with the Silver Blades is the hope that she will one day destroy Brom (by humiliating him and killing him in the most painful way possible). Nyx knows that her brother was probably killed by the Copper Bloods, but she can't help but wonder if he survived. If Erebus were alive, finding him would be Nyx's only goal besides killing Brom.
Backstory: Haus was a scholar studying different languages and histories. It wasn't until he found a spellbook by accident that his interest in the arcane sparked. To continue his research and studies, he work various jobs but the pay was not to his standards. Haus eventually encountered Pike Brickbane who offered to not only help fund Haus' research but give him the opportunity to test his skills.
Siegfried the Drenched (Primary Alias: Brother Herelaf)
Human Trickery Cleric
Siegfried's introduction to the Silver Blades nearly ended with a dagger in his throat. A common charlatan and con-man, he'd been wandering the roads using his wit and wiles to cheat and trick his fellow travelers out of their hard-earned silver (and gold, when he was lucky). Things changed when he entered Dun Farum and, after only a few months, managed to con someone he honestly should not have. His victim, an enforcer of middling rank in the Silver Blades, was furious when he discovered that the potion he'd received from Siegfried to... "enhance" his manhood, had absolutely no effect, and dragged the con-man before a higher-ranking member of the Silver Blades. It was here, however, that fate took a turn. Instead of being shanked and left to die, Siegfried was recruited (his alternative having been being shanked and left to die) by the bishop of a nearby chapel. A bishop who was not, as he appeared to the people of Dun Farum, a bishop to the standard gods of the city, but rather to La Donna Annegata, the Drowned Lady, a little known patron of tricksters and thieves. It was under the bishop's tutelage and the knife of the Silver Blades that Siegfried became a valuable asset to the organization. Now (slightly more) trusted by the Silver Blades, his talents in subterfuge are at their disposal, however they see fit to use them.

Being one of neither Dun Farum nor the Underdark, Ruhvon found a place of his own in between the two skulking in the sewers below the city. It is amazing what sort of stuff gets discarded, especially when sifting through the trash under the Mage Quarter. Not only pieces of minor random trinkets that allows one to be more in tune with the spirits of nature, but also able to pick up pieces of information that can be overheard or collected from the streets above.
Ruhvon initially survived by offering any useful bits from his scavaging to the Silver Blades. Now that his connection to nature and the cycle of life and death has grown stronger, the Blades have offered him used him a number of times as a spy to get close to their targets - not many take a second look at the passing sewer rat or alley cat.
Some say Pereval is the cast-off issue of a scandalous love affair between an ambassador and a milkmaid. Others insist he was kidnapped from the Deeping Wood by Imperial slavers. Others whisper behind the safety of their tankards that the Black Thorne was twisted from the bones of a freshly-slain dragon into the semblance of an elf. Though none can agree on his true origin, Blackthorne's present lies squarely with the Silver Blades.
Pereval's fine elven features have been thoroughly ground into a fine, cosmopolitan paste common to the underbelly of society. Though in good light (hard to find in these parts) some of his ancestral etherealness can be seen in the tilt of his darkly-haired head, the shock of a twice-broken nose and cauliflower ears somewhat spoils the effect. His nose was freshly broken when She found him. All his hard-won survival skills melted away as Her hand emerged from a raven-crested ebony shawl, holding out a crust of bread (still warm from the oven, not a hint of rot!); he fell asleep in Her arms before he remembered himself enough to bolt. Pereval awoke wrapped in a threadbare but clean blanket, newly indentured into servitude to the Silver Blades. Many would have resented the Woman, but Pereval never forgot Her kindness, nor how She saved him from a lifetime of pointless beatings. The beatings now taught Obedience and Respect; later, when Pereval's aptitude for violence surfaced, they instilled Discipline, Technique, and Prowess. It was the Lady's will to serve the Silver Blades, and Pereval relished the lessons and eagerly teaches them to others. Pereval chose the surname Blackthorne to honor Her, and volunteered on the most onerous, far-flung missions seeking to catch a glimpse of Her. Pike Brickbane has friends in the intelligence branch of the Silver Blades; he even knows the Godfather. When Brickbane went looking for a new Fix Team (never mind what happened to the last one!), Pereval jumped at the chance. Pereval knows that someday, somehow, he will discover the details of his indenture and be one step closer to finding the Lady.
Thank you for considering my application. This is my first foray into play-by-post, and I hope you'll take a chance on me! The Woman defines Pereval's motivation, but at your discretion She may only be a fevered dream wrought by a broken child's mind (don't feel like holding the campaign hostage to my backstory).
Lacia was born in a human community who had a racist outlook on life. Her family was given kindness by the oddest of people a criminal who goes by the name Arion and so the only human that was accepting of them was a criminal.
After a significant drought and famine, the community thought this was divine punishment for harboring fiendish humanoids (Tieflings) so they declared a hunt to kill any and all Tieflings in the area. Lacia at the time was being taught by Arion on how to survive in this bleak world filled with hate. The residents stormed Lacia’s household and killed her parents. This drove Arion to run with Lacia, fearing both his life and hers.
Fast forward when she is 18 Lacia has been taught the way of life of a rouge, she also had a talent with instruments and actually had magical talent. Then she was directed a bards college for a year.
After a few months worth of conning she was recruited to the silverblades and has been working with them ever since. The reason she was recruited was a recommendation from her mentor Arion, he must have been pretty high on the ladder because she was recruited without much difficulty into a fix team. That means her skill set must be quite prized. Although she was given nasty looks from the members her exceptional skills more than made up for it. Her principle of doing things is do whatever you want as long as you benefit from it

That is a fairly unfortunate set of rolls, but that's the nature of doing a roll for attributes! But, at least, you have a couple of 14s, so your build shouldn't be ****** too hard. I would prefer you to keep the stats you rolled but, take it as an opportunity for roleplaying prompt - that 5 in particular means you have something you are truly awful at. What would that be? How would it affect how your character acts? You've put it as charisma, which you could make fit with your backstory nicely if you wanted to?
I'm not planning on making this campaign a ruthless test of strategy, so don't feel the need to min-max and don't feel it means you won't have fun!
Yeah, I put it in CHA since one that spends a lot of time in the sewers wouldn't be the most presentable nor would they likely be skilled social aspects.

(Yeesh... Perhaps the chance to take standard array?)
Name: Ruhvon
Race: Half-drow (using standard half-elf)
Class: Druid, Circle of Spores
https://ddb.ac/characters/11617131/NdcBFZ (used rolled stats, I can work with them if you'd like)
Being one of neither Dun Farum nor the Underdark, Ruhvon found a place of his own in between the two skulking in the sewers below the city.

Pereval Blackthorne, Elf (High) Fighter.

To uphold my values, I fight for Truth, Justice, and Peace. Two out of three ain't bad.

Lacia Leporem A Tiefling Bard
Her principle of doing things is do whatever you want as long as you benefit from it
Waiting list on Silver blades as Lacia Leporem
Pbp on LMoP Bannered blades as Charmine Verral
That's an awful set of rolls friend... what happened to your magic? :)
PbP Character: A few ;)
DM - Silver Blades homebrew
Vonrak Hammerstone - Fighter/Wizard: Pick and Play
Yeah, I put it in CHA since one that spends a lot of time in the sewers wouldn't be the most presentable nor would they likely be skilled social aspects.
