Across the plateaus of the Heaven Saw Range, a series of mountains cutting across the territory of the same name, the whistle of the steam train cuts across the open air. In a few hours, the train would reach its station in Drywood. Folks of different sorts had their own reasons for boarding the train. Some were drawn to the prosperity of the town, others were simply returning from visiting family. However, for a few, there was a very specific reason to be on this train. Rumor had it that there was an item aboard this train that would go for a pretty penny in the right hands or could really shake up how the United Militia was operating around here. Unfortunately, it would appear that the Militia have also taken an interest in this, judging by a couple men in uniform in some of the cars. Meanwhile, as to what that item is, well no one can say, but its somewhere on this train. However, for those well connected, there was a very identifiable trait for the carrier. They are... a giant turtle.
Why don’t our passengers take a moment to describe exactly where and what they are currently doing on the train?
Deshthi Geddao (Deshi) is no stranger to stares. That said, he's more accustomed to being a familiar oddity with the students and faculty of the University. They hadn't left the flagstone streets of their home since they were a youngling, and so far this adventure on the steam train has been even more exciting than they remembered.
The tortle lifts a black claw up to its scaled scalp, scratching idly at a bright magenta earspot. Their naturally brown and yellow star-patterned shell is further designed with an intricate array of painted flowers, clouds, constellations, runic emblems... Large and incredibly heavy, Deshi would be imposing if he weren't pouring over a manuscript with an ever-present grin fixed on their reptilian face.
Given Deshi's... unique appearance, it would be easy to miss the twisted wooden staff leaning against their painted shell. Harder to miss is the ink-black raven perched atop it.
Penny boarded the train some while ago, to really get the lay of the land. The turtle wasn’t going to be hard to find, but with this sort of job, you had to be careful about the competition. She’d been canvassing the train cars, not so much for her quarry, but for the others looking for it.
The turtle was easy. Pretty gaudy, actually. She passed it, looking it over, then looking for a seat with a view of the car’s passengers. Finding the perfect one occupied by a pair of gnomes, she squeezed into it, ignoring their protests. “Train’s full, small butts are three to a seat, it’s on the ticket.” Ignoring them, she leaned in close to the unruly child across the aisle, showing him a candy wrapper she just lifted from his pocket, and whispered, “They’re giving free candy in the dining car, three back.” When the exasperated parent gives chase, she points out the empty seat to the gnomes. “Feel free.”
Then she settles in to watch.

A man. A greyish skinned man. Tusks protruding from his stubbled lower jaw. He could easily be mistaken for a half-orc with his brutish appearance, Roland Wolfscribe. He sits by a table alone in the restaurant wagon. Almost more broad than he is tall he sits on two chairs, just to be safe. Probably for the best, since he is wearing a neatly polished scale mail and a large broad bladed glaive on his caped back. The cape is embroidered with symbols of water on the bottom and grey thunderclouds cresting his shoulders.
Stubby fingers throw back the fifth ale into the massive mans gullet. "BOOM!!" He slams the mug into the table so hard it cracks. "HEY BUTTMUNCH, ANOTHER ONE OF THESE, AND A SHOT WHILE YOUR AT IT.", Roland shouts at the nearest waiter. With no regards to the rest of the patrons at the restaurant he lets out a resounding, earth shaking burp. "HAHAHA, LISTEN! THE RUMBLE OF THUNDER HIPPO!!"
He gets up and spreads his arms, as if waiting for applause.

Penny rolls her eyes at the wrestler. Some rocks in his brain, drawing that much attention to himself. But, a good distraction.
(Penny is a short, slim young woman of not much to report, dark hair, dusky skin, nondescript clothing, maybe one more knife about her person than you might expect, if you’re the sort to notice that.)

Ormond Sacker, in typical fashion, had been one of the first to get to the platform. At that point, tracking the tortle was simply a matter of following them onto the train. He managed to find a seat across the aisle from the colorful tortle. Wearing a dusty, dark brown cloak, over a layer of equally dusty and dark clothing, only a hint of the chain mail beneath could be seen around the collar. His arms are loosely bandaged from beneath his sleeves to under his gauntlets. He wears black steel gauntlets, the metal etched to match the skin of some sort of creature. His gear placed haphazardly next to him and he silently eyes anyone wishing to sit where his gear is comfortably within reach until they take the hint and walk off. He had to snarl only once so far.
His hair is cropped short, but his beard is long and scraggly, as one unaccustomed to maintaining a beard. His hair, like his beard, is black, but graying. His skin is a dark almond hew. He sits tall in the seat, his eyes, pools of black, look out for every newcomer walking towards him on the train.
A bit into the train ride, he says aloud, "Trains... I miss the days of horseback and camping in the evening's twilight. It's a beautiful time - if you're quiet enough to take it in." He then turns to the tortle sitting across the aisle from him and pointedly asks, "Don't you agree?"
It is at this point that Roland’s bellowing rings out across the car, alerting all to the presence of the Thunder Hippo. Including turning a few guards heads.

Deshi looks up and opens his mouth to reply to the human, but the hippo's bellow causes them to squeeze their eyes shut in surprise. The raven atop their staff squawks and flaps its wings.
He opens an eye and glances back at Roland. "Quiet?" He says, the grin never fading as he returns his attention to the man across from him. "Quiet is nice. Trains are nice, as well. Are you traveling far, my friend?"
Meanwhile, at the bar, the bartender leans over to Roland, “Hey, I heard about you. You used to be that gladiator, right? The guy that had that losing streak to... eh... what’s the guy’s name?” He snaps his fingers a couple times, “Purple... Albatross? No, that doesn’t sound right.”

Ormond replies, "I travel as far as I need to..."
He then leans over across the aisle and, while trying to get eyes on what the tortle is reading whispers, "... but sometimes that leads me to places that I shouldn't be."
Roland stomps over to the bar. "Shut it. That POWERLESS PIGEON is nothing compared to me, THUNDER HIPPO. The matches were rigged by the World Government."He slams a fist onto the bar. "Where's that drink?"

That's what she was looking for. Well, one of the things.
Penny stands up, points to her seat and makes finger-to-eye hand signs to let the gnomes know she's watching them, and makes her way to where the Hippo is sitting forlornly. On her way she'll try to snag someone's alcoholic drink to present to him.

Meh, She stumbles and apologizes to the mark, moves on without the drink. She sits down next to Roland, a young woman, nothing special. "So you're the Thunder Hippo. Big fan. Never seen anything more impressive in my life."

The match was easy enough, but the stalking brat?.. The United Militia never found more than two teeth and a toe." He pats the glaive on his pack and picks his teeth.
