NOTE: Please look further down the thread, I've posted some more pertinent information for character backstories.
Hello all,
I tried running 2 different groups of this adventure about a year ago, but got swamped with work and couldn't continue. I'd like to try again . . .
So let me introduce myself. I've been playing D&D for about 5 years or so, mostly online through PbP on here. I also DMed an IRL group for a year before it fell apart, playing this exact adventure. I have also previously run a PvP arena and two groups playing Out of the Abyss as a DM on these forums.
Now, for the adventure. Princes of the Apocalypse is 5e's installment in the Elemental Evil storyline, and is basically a sandbox dungeon crawl in many ways. There will still be a fair amount of roleplay, however. Each dungeon is built towards PCs being a certain level—however, I will not keep you from venturing into a dungeon currently too hard for the group.
To apply for this game, please use the application below. I'm looking for 5-6 PCs (starting level 1) who can post at least once a day, preferably more. If you don't post for more than a day and we're waiting on you, I'll take temporary control of your character. Your backstory for this adventure could (but isn't required to) mention something about elemental evil cults, or include something about the odd environmental disasters currently happening. If anyone wants a little more information to tailor their backstory closer to the campaign, please send me a PM. You can either post your application in this thread or send it to me privately. Please include the word pineapple somewhere in your post so I know you've actually read this entire post.
Critical Role is allowed, UA is not. Eberron and Ravnica races and whatnot are allowed, but I don't personally have the sourcebooks or the resources to share them with you. There are no restrictions on how many books you can use to create your character. Start at level 1, use starting equipment or gold. You can roll for ability scores (no rerolling ones), but if you don't like what you get you can just use point buy. I will be using Milestone progression for the most part. I am in US EST (for context, it's around 11:30 AM when I'm posting this).

I will look at your D&D experience, but I'm not averse to taking a few new players. PotA is a reasonably beginner friendly campaign, imo.
Please let me know if you think I've missed anything in this intro. I'll be closing recruitment sometime Saturday morning/afternoon if I get enough responses by then. I'll pick PCs based mostly on variety of classes (i. e. I won't pick 4 rangers), and creativity/completeness/thematicness(?) of backstory.

Backstory: Jairus has lived "off the grid" so to speak for most of his youth. He was raised by his mother, a recluse, who seemed to carry some skeletons in her closet that kept her from visiting "the city." He grew up with very little knowledge of the outside world, but extensive training to hone his senses against signs of trap or ambush, in case "her enemies" came. He also learned stealth, tracking, and the ability to avoid dangerous animals and quickly and silently take down prey animals, striking at their weak points. After some time Jairus began to suspect these enemies were fabrications of a troubled mind, and he believed his mother to be mad.
Occasionally she would send him into "the city" to trade furs for supplies they would need to get through the lean months. One day, in his rebellious teens, Jairus stayed in the city, attempted to befriend a girl he fancied. Giddy with the experience of youthful rebellion and infatuation, he returned home in high spirits, ready to face his mother's scolding. She was gone. Whether it was her imagined or real "enemies" or some other reason, she had disappeared without a trace.
Jairus waited for several weeks, then gathered his meager belongings and set off to live life, to find work as an adventurer. He feels self conscious, like a backwoods rustic, but he is determined to see more of the world than the woods outside his childhood home, and a single small village nearby where he grew up believing it was "the city." Now, at age 17, he feels like his life is just starting. He wants to live, to love, to have adventures, maybe even to try a pineapplefor the first time.

Name: Aurlan Vask, Scourge Aasimar Bard (Valor at lv 3)
Backstory:
Aurlan Vask, an archeologist and a member of the Harpers of Waterdeep, made a living searching for arcane relics. He would often find himself stuck in a temple or tomb of some kind, but he enjoyed the challenges and the thrill of finding things, though he made a principle of returning relics to those who could be trusted to handle them. During an expedition into an ancient shrine to Tymora, he touched the mosaic of the goddess while he was sketching it - falling unconscious and receiving a vision. It was then that he discovered his calling and his heritage as an Aasimar. The figure that appeared in his dream gave her name - Adellum, Emissary of Tymora - and a quest: to find and retrieve relics and artifacts before they fall into the hands of cults of elemental evil and cause untold damage to the material plane. When Aurlan awoke, a map to a stronghold below the Sumber Hills lay beside him.
Experience with DND: I mod a pbp DND server on discord (3 months) and have been playing DND in real life and online for 2 years. Except for one Christmas oneshot that I dmed (evil drow steals Santa's sleigh), I have yet to finish a campaign, and have never had one of my characters go all the way into high-tier play. I like pineapple juice.
Backstory - Grind has been a soldier most of his life. He fought for his Clan during the War of the Silver Marches. In one battle his entire company was killed except him. He was found barely alive in the midst of bloody orc corpses. Brought back home, he was in a catatonic state for many months. When he did come out of it, he decided to leave his kin. He could not face them since he felt he was responsible for the deaths of all the dwarves under his command during the war. He was eventually able to find employment as part of the army of Baldur's Gate. He has been part of several patrols out of Baldur's Gate to investigate the rumors of cult activity in the nearby towns and villages.
Experience with D&D : I am a long time player of D&D but I haven't played that much of 5E. I don't get to play much in person since my friends have moved away and have just recently discovered PBP. I am familiar with 5E rules. I love both role-playing and combat.
Race/Class Half-Elf Tempest Cleric (Deity is Valkur)
Backstory: Elias grew up on the ship called The Blind Dragon. He didn't know many people in the world, but those on the ship. One person in particular took Elias under his wing, Merin a halfling cleric of Valkur. On a run along the coast The Dragon was hit but a sudden and fierce storm. The sailors didn't have enough time to prepare for it and thanks to only Merin not every person died that day. Elias' world was rocked hard. Most of the people he knew were dead, his friends, his family. over half of the total people on this world he knew were gone. After the storm there was a chilling, haunting laugh that echoed over the water, the malevolent laugh of a person Elias would come to know as Gar Shatterkeel. Witnessing the power that Merin had received from Valkur, Elias chose that moment to seek it, grasp it for himself. As soon as they got to relative safety Elias dropped to his knees and prayed a vengeful prayer to Valkur, Captain of the Waves, to help him repay Gar for the lives of the sailors lost that day.

Rolim was a member of a demonic cult, and they practiced horrible experiments on animals. Rolim's parents were both clerics of Lathander, and were shamed when Rolim was caught in the act. He was practicing his most disgusting experiment yet, a mix between a human, a cow, and a monkey, when his parents found him. They banned him from his village (The were the town leaders) and told him if he ever wanted to come back, he would need to do an extraordinary good deed. He wanders the land, helping who he can, and looking for something to redeem himself with. It has been almost two years since he was banished, and he is starting to feel remorse for his actions.
Experience: I've played DnD for almost two, maybe three years, and am familiar with 5e and the forgotten realms. I prefer to play over DMing, and lean into RP.

Backstory: Lasair's tribe the Rivermaw are a nomadic people welcoming many races with druidic gifts. They are charged with the great and dangerous task of finding and destroying natural and unnatural anomalies effecting the creatures and plants that make whatever lands affected their home. Lasair is the strong willed youngest daughter of the tribes leader. Her mother sits on a council of seven clans who lead her people she is the eighth daughter of her mother's house, Lasair isn't ascending the throne anytime soon. She's more the curious rebel the experimental type, having eaten the first pineapple found in the wilds, still hungry for adventure and to prove herself a capable leader of her people.
Experience with D&D: Playing some version of DnD since 1993!
The character has been assigned to infiltrate the mysterious druids of the Circle of the Scarlet Moon and discover their true plans. The circle supposedly knows ritual magic unknown to other druids.
He was brought into the Material Plane from the Earth Plane, Geord has been a wanderer of the Material Plane trying to protect it from growing evil. He had a vision from Chauntea, the Grain Goddess, when he was a teenager. He didn't quite understood the vision but he knew he was destined for great things. His mother and father were farmers and healers of the land. He learned to be one with the earth and all the inhabitants. Even with the good, he believed that evil is there to balance it out like in nature. As he got older his visions got stronger and stronger. His parents were worried but they knew too that he was destined to be something great.
One day, Chauntea appeared to him and his parents. She tells him to go to Material Plane with her to help. Evil has been growing and there was an imbalance in nature. His parents gave him their blessing and he promise to them that he would return one day. He shakes his fathers hand and hugs him. He kisses his mother on the cheek and hugs her. Chauntea then takes him by the hand and a portal appeared. Unlike the earth plane that he lives in where it is mountainous and desert-like, he looks into the portal to see a lush green forest. His eyes widen to see such vegetation as it was difficult to cultivate at home. His parents were masters of the land and knew how to farm and cultivate in a difficult terrain. He looks back at them and waves goodbye as he enters the portal with the goddess, Chauntea.

Name Omen (Grandpa Omen)
Race/Class Human-Sorcerer-Dragonblood
Backstory Omen started out as a young adventurer set out to make a name for himself in the world. He joined a small band of adventurers and set out on the path to fame and glory. Then, after a small adventurer around the town of Daggerford, he met Iona, beautiful local farm girl and Omen was smitten. he hung up his adventuring gear, used his part of the adventure money to buy a small farm and he and Iona were married and raised a family with 2 boys, Patrick and Cadfrey and a girl, Willow. Omen lived the life of a gentleman farmer, raising animals, crops and a family. He gained a little renown for raising horses and for helping put an end to a goblin raid a few years back so locals know him and pretty much like him. (Except for Old Ned and he can go to the nine hells.) The kids grew up and moved out, Patrick started a family and lives close by-that boy's a merchant. Cadfrey went out and got himself admitted to Candlekeep, smart one that boy. Willow.....lets just say Willow has a wild streak and is running free somewhere, dropping in time to time. Omen took up cooking, becoming a pretty good chef and has heard of pineapple and wants to see what the fuss is all about. Omen and Iona started to live out their 'golden years" with the simple life when she got sick. Before she went off to the next world Iona said "Omen, you old vagabond, I don't want you sitting around this farm moping. You'll see me soon enough so you go out and have yourself some damn fool adventure like you always wanted after I'm gone. You promise me you will." She insisted and Omen promised her he would. She's been gone about a year now, buried right on the farm. Two days ago Patrick came in to the house all panicking and yelling, "They took them Pa, They took them." Come to find out some crazy cult Patrick's wife got tangled up in came in and took Jenny and James, the grandkids and Patrick, not being a man of action. is organizing a small group to go find them. Omen tells Patrick to mind the farm, pulls out his old rapier from the locker in the barn, gets his bow, axe and a couple daggers. He packs some supplies and saddles up his best mule-Percy and is off to kind those grandkids. (I apologize for it being so long but, its the story)
Experience with D&D: I've played for a long time, off and on. Started out with 1st addition, played 3.5 and came back, learning 5e. I've been on since August last year and playing in a couple PbP games currently.
I'll pick PCs based mostly on variety of classes (i. e. I won't pick 4 rangers), and creativity/completeness/thematicness(?) of backstory.

Backstory:Settle a Score - Marauders in stony armor robbed the character’s friends or family and left the character for dead. Now it’s time to even the score.
Tolbard is a dock worker in a local fishing town. Foul-mouthed, boisterous, and extremely loyal to family, Tolbard is not the type to let wrongs go un-righted. He ran away from an alcoholic father and an negligent mother as a teenager and was taken in by a family of fishers in a nearby village. They've been like family to him ever since. This family is now ruined after being robbed and battered by unknown marauders. They took the family's savings and destroyed their equipment, dooming them to fail to provide in the future. Seeking revenge (and thinking he was one less mouth to feed), he left quietly in the night to track down those that did his family wrong and make them pay.
For a Halfling, Tolbard comes off as pretty gruff, but he does have a soft spot once he's warmed up. His jabs and taunts are usually well-meaning, but he's not always aware when his rough play is inappropriate. He misses his family and is subconsciously seeking to fill that void.
Experience with D&D: I've been playing D&D on and off casually since 3.5e. I started DMing my first game when quarantine started, running Sunless Citadel for my nieces and nephews ages 8 to 12. It's been a fun experience! One of them wanted to play as spongebob, but I told them we could do that if they somehow find a pineapple under the sea. I've also recently gotten into PbP through the Play by Forum initiative recently put on over at boardgamegeek. I'm really enjoying the time to think and to get to play a little each day.
Here are some hooks you can incorporate into your character's backstory if you wish:
Dangerous Secret
The character has been assigned to infiltrate the mysterious druids of the Circle of the Scarlet Moon and discover their true plans. The circle supposedly knows ritual magic unknown to other druids.
Dark Omens
The signs and portents are clear: nature is out of balance. Terrible disaster is drawing closer with every passing day.
Hired Hand
Homesteaders who were kind to itinerant workers are now missing. The character sets out to have revenge and to rescue any survivors.
The Mud Sorcerer
Months ago, the character was robbed by a genasi who killed several innocent bystanders. Now it’s time to find Miraj Vizann and make him pay.
The Fugitive
The character is on the trail of a ruthless murderer, Bastian Thermandar.
Ominous Dream
The character has seen the earth prophet, Marlos Urnrayle, in dreams and knows that Marlos is a dangerous villain who must be stopped.
Recover Your Sword
Thugs associated with the water cult broke into the workshop where the character apprenticed, murdered the master smith, and stole the beautiful sword she’d made.
Rescue Your People
Raiders from the fire cult have abducted people the character feels responsible for protecting. They must be rescued at any cost.
Seeking Revenge
Fire cultists torched the character’s home or razed a defenseless village. The character is sworn to stop them.
Settle a Score
Marauders in stony armor robbed the character’s friends or family and left the character for dead. Now it’s time to even the score.
Shatterkeel’s Trail
Months ago, Gar Shatterkeel destroyed the character’s ship by conjuring a powerful storm. Dozens of sailors died, and now the character intends revenge.
Standing Offer
Months ago, the character served as a guide for a band of mysterious pilgrims who set out to reoccupy the Sacred Stone Monastery. The character’s mission is to infiltrate the group and discover their intentions.
Strange Map
An ancient map has come into the character’s possession, showing the location of a forgotten dwarf stronghold beneath the Sumber Hills
Undercover
The character is tasked to break up a smuggling and piracy ring on the Dessarin River headquartered at Rivergard Keep.
Walked Away
The character was briefly recruited by the fire cultists but never took up arms with them. Now the character wants to stop the villains before they give all mercenaries a bad name.

Relicta was born from a human mother, daughter of a nobleman. Upon the midwife seeing her, she told her she and her child would be put to death because of this. Panicking, the mother insisted the midwife take her somewhere safe and told family it was stillborn. The family held a funeral for the child, filling the coffin with rocks.
The midwife took the baby to a isolated monastery and left it at the door where donations were placed. The monks named her relicta, Latin for abandoned, and raised her.
She was taught how to curb her rage and control it to work for her. Upon becoming an adult, the monks encouraged her to go out into the world.

Name Kethra Stormwind
Race/Class normal human/barbarian
Backstory
Kethra is an apprentice swordsmith who...isn't exactly the best at the trade. Her master Stormwind is a skillful but strict woman who enforces strict training as the protector of the Silver Watchtower, an ornate sword that legends say was the personal weapon of the village's founder.
To supplement her training, Kethra works on her off-hours as a gardener for the local nobleman using tools she made herself, confident that hard work will create results.
And one day, it did.
Impressed by her willingness to work harder than the average itinerant worker and her positive attitude, the nobleman invited Kethra to talk to him after one particularly hot day over pina colada (that had some real quality pineapples).
But...no good deed goes unpunished. By the time she returned to the blacksmith's shop, the place was ransacked with the Master Stormwind fatally injured. Judging by the bodies that were cut down by the smith's artful blade work, the place was attacked by the water cult. In her dying breath, Master Stormwind said Kethra had always been a daughter to her, and Kethra vowed that she would retrieve The Silver Watchtower.

Name: Rolim Valran
Race: Elf Class: Wizard (I might MC later in the campaign.)
Ability scores: PB: 10 12 13 15 12 11

Name: Geord Terran
Race/Class: Earth Genasi / Cleric (Nature Domain)
Backstory: Dark Omens

This sounds like fun! Here's my
WIPapplication:Name: Tolbard Coppercrest
Race/Class: Halfling Rogue
Rolls: 8 12 12 13 15 13
Backstory: Settle a Score - Marauders in stony armor robbed the character’s friends or family and left the character for dead.

I would like to play:
Name: Relicta
Race: Half Orc
Gender: Female
Class: Monk

Sorry, my fault! I thought it would be best to ask what type of character you'd like to fill in. Thanks for the hooks, though. I kind of combined "hired hand" and "recover your sword" into something new.
