Melodramatic welcomes aside, Out of the Abyss is a level 1 to 15 adventure that takes place almost entirely in the Underdark. It is very combat heavy, but there is also a fair amount of exploration/survival and some good opportunities for roleplay. You are prisoners of the drow, trying to make your escape to the surface. On your way you discover a threat more sinister than you thought, even to the world above.
Now, the details. I'm looking for 1 PC for this campaign, starting at level 3. I do ask that you post at least once a day (more is preferred), and I'll be posting big updates usually twice a day at least. I'll be picking characters based on backstory and class variety (I'm not going to pick 5 hexblades).
How do I run things? Like I said, please post once a day (unless you're unable to for some reason, vacation etc.). I usually roll initiatives for players to keep combat moving smoothly, and I will bot you if you don't post within a day in combat scenarios. On the topic of initiative, I use a kind of group initiative to account for the difficulties of PbP. Basically, you can act within your initiative group, but PCs might be separated by a monster's initiative (this will make more sense when you see it). I have PCs roll their own saving throws, but if you'd prefer me to I will.
For character creation—you can use any source that's not UA (although I don't own some of the later sourcebooks like Eberron, and will be less familiar with them). Roll for ability scores (drop ones once), if you don't like the result you can use point buy or standard array (but not reroll). Your backstory doesn't have to be based around the Underdark or demons or anything like that necessarily, but you should include how you ended up in the Underdark. Please PM me the word Velkynvelve so I know you read this entire post.

Kita was born to a small druidic tribe that resided in the Peaks of Flame on the island of Chult. She was the youngest of three children and was by far the most curious. That curiosity drove her from the safety of her tribe to the wilds of the Peaks and beyond, more often than not getting her into trouble. However, despite the many, many lectures of her parents and chieftain, Kita couldn’t curb her curiosity. She wished to know the nature of all lands. Eventually, she left the Island of Chult to continue her exploration. Unfortunately, shortly after arriving on the mainland, Kira's curiosity drove her to follow a small group of drow which lead to her being captured and taken to the underdark.

Backstory: Unlike many dragonborn, the silver-scaled Flynt, born in the region of Tymanther, didn't know parents. His clan's elders told him they perished after suffering from a sickness. His closest friend was his cousin Steel, a promising sorcerer who left to pursue his own adventures. One evening,
Flynt left his home as an adult, though was unprepared for the world. His quest to find his friend led him to Neverwinter where he slept in a temple. Having no money, Flynt decided to work as a bouncer at the Driftwood Tavern. It was there he met a fellow dragonborn Eyeron Buhterflie, who told him about the god Bahamut and suggested he join the Talons, a group of dragonborn paladins inspired by the former Talons of Justice. Flynt trained with the Talons and became a dedicated servant to Bahamut. On his graduation day, he met Steel again, who said he was proud of how Flynt took up his own cause and encouraged the paladin to seek his own journey. Flynt vowed to make his friend proud.
Born and lived his first 100 years in the Underdark, dealing with the Drow and other wild elves. Raised by the wild elves of the underdark untill his 100th birthday he was considered an adult and left to seek out redemption in a life of adventure.. apon nearing his escape from the underdark for good he had been captured by the drow like he's mother many years ago..

backstory: 30 years ago, a drow raiding band came out of the under dark. they exited a small cave and attacked a small elf caravan. they killed the men and took the women prisoner. Quinn's mother was one of them. on the way to Menzoberranzan , she seduced one of the younger warriors, and managed to escape. however she could not find her way back to the surface, and inadvertently went deeper. just as she thought she was going to die, she was stumbled upon by a friendly group of svirfneblin. they took her in and healed her wounds, but they could do nothing for he sickness in her stomach. the guard she had seduced had impregnated her, and after nine months in the gnomes care she gave birth to a healthy boy. she named him Quinn and raised him in the gnome town. she taught him elvish and common, and the gnomes taught him undercommon. he learned to fight and some basic magic. But... on the day of his 18th birthday, his mother was going to collect water, and she was caught and captured by the drow from whom she escaped from. she was taken to a small encampment ready to be shipped to Menzoberranzan. when Quinn found out he was distraught. he tried to make his way after them, but got hopelessly lost. again all hope seemed lost. he fell into a crevasse, but luckily his ankle caught and broke his fall. lying at the bottom, he was ready to die. but in the darkness there was a voice. a small feminine voice. it asked who was there. when Quinn replied, he heard a scuffling noise, and to his great surprise, a halfling ran out. she introduced herself, and told Quinn that she was an adventurer. she had lost her way down here, and eventually decided to live here. when he told her of his plight she was sympathetic. she told him that she knew where this outpost is, but that she would be shipped off too soon for him to get to her. however there was a tale of a weapon that could help free her. a sword deep in a nearby cave that would help those in dire need. Quinn set off to find it. he made his way into the cave, and down into the cavern in which the sword lay. skeletons of the fallen who had tried to claim the sword lay strewn about. however on the plaque, although there was a scabbard, there was no sword in sight. at that moment a voice spoke in his mind. it told him that the weapon would appear when Quinn answered its questions truthfully. Quinn did and the voice laughed. " finally a hero worthy of my help" it said. it told him that the sword was but a relic, and had rusted away. the actually magic was a legacy. the power of the original protecter- a warrior of the under dark who opposed the spider queen. it told Quinn that it had imparted the protecters power within him, and that it was now his to use as he wished- as long as he used it for good.
unfortunately, on his way to Menzoberranzan, Quinn was captured by the drow.

Ranger
Backstory Rurik was always bible for his race, a trait noticed by his elders which resulted in him being tapped to be a scout for his clan. After years of learning the trails of the Underdark, the threats, how to ambush and how to track underground, how to find prey and how to lead the following armies to it, Rurik was finally inducted into the rarely seen Rangers of his people, destined to join the ranks of the Gloomstalkers. But on his very first full mission, his team was ambushed in the caverns by something dark and powerful. In the confusion and terror Rurik became the only survivor, then lost in the underground he grew up in. Unfortunately he was then captured by Drow and now he waits, shamed and ready for death.

Background: Ages in the past Kai's parents fled to the Far East. Over the human generation, they became legendary for their wisdom and earth magic. On attaining adulthood, Kai decided to travel west, to the lands of his ancestors. Along the way, he was captured and sold to a race of elves he had never seen or heard of before.
I have played D&D on and off since the 80's. I have experience running and being a member of campaigns on DnDBeyond as well as on (old) bulletin boards.
I am EST, and WFH so during the week, I can regularly check-in. Weekends, I will be able to check-in 1 or 2 times a day.
Background: Umryl's clan was not thrilled to have a sorcerer in their midst, much less one who inexplicably went on about enjoying the wide open sky and feeling the fresh wind on his face. They were happy though to have his magic helping defend the clan when he became a scout in the small military that defended them. On one patrol his group was ambushed by Drow and he was taken alive as a slave.
Experience: I've played a bit of 3.5 and 5e, and I'm currently DMing a 5e Roll20 game.
Timezone: I'm EST and can usually check in several times a day on weekdays plus at least once a day weekends.
NPC question: I don't have much preference, I can handle an NPC if it helps.

Backstory
This character is partially inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's "The Beast In The Cave".
White Wendigo is the name they have given him. He knows this, because that is the name they cry out when they see him. He supposes it is because of the curious pale hair that began to grow on his body as he adapted to his environment over the years, and the unfortunate results of his first interaction with a person after entering the caves. He does not know when the legends and stories first started, though it is likely that they are from those who have gazed upon him and escaped, though it is a rare occurrence, or found his prey. Perhaps it was in the earlier years, when he was not so stealthy. His memory of days before that is fuzzy, though he is sure there was a time before.
He remembers a great blue ceiling over his head, and green fur on the ground. He remembers that he once lived in that great cave above, but there is little else besides that. He remembers clearly how everything changed one day. He left behind the green ground-fur and the great blue ceiling and headed into the darkness of a cave. Perhaps to seek shelter? He does not remember. He entered the cave, and there he found the crack. More precisely, there he fell into the crack. He lay at the bottom many days, before eventually giving up on rescue. He ventured deeper, hoping to find an exit to the twisting maze of stone, but he instead found himself traveling deeper and deeper into the darkness. Those were hard days. When he ran out of the food he had brought with him, he lived off of the occasional bit of questionable lichen or crunchy insect. Sometimes he found a pool with a few tiny, blind fish, but they did not last. He went deeper and deeper, barely staying alive.
He was vaguely aware of the strange changes his body was undergoing, adapting to his new environment. His back became crooked, bending to allow him to better traverse his cramped environment. His limbs lengthened, and his hair lost its color, becoming pale white, and started to grow more than it ever had before, all over his body, keeping him warm in the cold darkness. He found himself getting better at lurking in the darkness and striking swiftly when the time was right, allowing him to catch his prey better. But when the prey came less and less, it seemed like it would be the end. Until he found the man. He was vaguely aware that it was more than just an animal, but he was too starved for rational thought. All he knew was three things: he was hungry, it was injured, and it had meat. It babbled in a tongue that he didn't understand, then he found a rock, and he stopped babbling. He remembers feeling shame rising up within him as he ate, but again, he was too starved to care.
After that, he swore off man-meat. He was still not fully animal, even if he was not entirely man anymore. He could take their supplies and food, but nothing that once spoke would pass by his lips again. Besides, it gave him terrible indigestion. He lived better than the days before, creeping about the tunnels near the civilization of man, dispatching and looting the occasional traveler. But rumors and legends spread, and eventually they decided to find and stop him. He was not aware of this, until the net came around him and the blunt object connected with his head.
Then there was black. He woke in the company of others, different from the dark and slender or pale and squat men and women who he had encountered before.
D&D/PbP Experience (beginners are welcome, just want to be aware)
3 or 4 years of playing 5e, and a few more years of 1e before that, with a few short stints as a DM that have turned out poorly. I started PbP only a few months after I first transferred over to 5e, and I've been doing it as much as irl D&D ever since.
Timezone/Availability
PDT, I'm on many times a day, though my availability might shrink when things start back up again.
Kind of a campaign specific question—in this campaign, there are numerous NPCs. They give me the choice of having PCs handling one each or something, or me just running them. Which would you prefer? I could go either way, it's not too much work for me.
I don't have a strong opinion either way, but if it takes a load off of you as the DM and I find one that's fun to play, I'm good with that.
Backstory: Savina’s black silk robes leave no room for doubt - this tiefling is important. The red embroidery along its edges compliment her red skin, and her golden eyes hide any true emotion she might be feeling.
She has played her diplomatic role well, working her way into drow society as a trusted informant from above. However, in a moment of weakness, she let down her guard and revealed her true colors - that of a vengeful daughter - guided by her hatred of those that killed her parents.
Her time in prison has left her robes tattered and her hair out of place, but she has not forgotten the pact she made with the mysterious entity - whose true identity she is not fully aware. All she knows is that she was given powers, and while she is temporarily set back in this prison cell, she will find a way out, and a way to get her revenge.
D&D/PbP Experience: 2 years of DnD and PbP experience
Timezone/Availability: PST, I am available almost all the time. I tend to check into my games every hour.
NPCs: I would be open to controlling an NPC if needed. I’ve never done that before - sounds interesting.
Backstory: Orphaned as child A sole survivor of rockslide Damian, was found by a Dwarven Couple traveling by. Knowing they would out live him they began to teach him the skills of blacksmithing at a early age. At the age of eight he made his first shield; he learned quickly and soon he began making armor just as good as his adopted parents. Impressed they decided to teach him about Mordain and his blessing to the forge. In time he would gain his blessing become a cleric and traveled the land in pursuit of making the ultimate armor. During a routine trip to local cave where he would mine for ore, The cave entrance collapsed traping Damian. Force to go ferther in he soon found his way in the underdark and was caught by a group of drow slavers.
D&D/PbP Experience: Ive been playing for on here for a few years and playing 5e for awhile longer.
Timezone/Availability: I can post once a day and more depends on work, I live in texas which is GMT-5.
NPCs: I have no preferences if it's a hired on hand i don't mind.

Ability Scores: Ability scores: 14 14 12 18 9 14
Race/Class: Tiefling/Warlock
