There are whispers of a dangerous cult on the rise....
Maybe a friend or mentor has urged you here, maybe this has been your home, or maybe you are a stranger merely among travels on the road in the wrong place at the right time to make a change and help...whatever the reason, something seems to be going on in the town of Greenest, nestled in the Greenfields in the south of the Sword Coast. There are strange people in strange clothes, a dragon seen in the sky, whispers on the wind of a cult on the rise, and you, poised to do something about it. So will you?
About the DM
My name is Ace. An early-to-mid 30's young man, working as close to full time as I can in the veterinary field during a time of pandemic. Life is stressful, and we all need something to destress. A few years ago I attempted to run a couple of PbP campaigns that fell through for a variety of reasons on both my and the players parts. I started to run in person games a home, but with the rise of the pandemic that has been placed on a major hold. Now I'm seeking to return to PbP in the hopes that something could last beyond a few scant months as interest wanes. So, if you want a long term campaign that plans to run through at the very least the start of a story, you are in the right place.
About the Game
The goal is to run a campaign that has multiple jumping off points, which Hoard of the Dragon Queen actually does. Since it takes place in the Sword Coast it is very easily a starting point that can lend to other campaigns and storylines, completely forgoing the Rise of Tiamat if interest lends that way. So I'm working this less as the entirety of the Cult of the Dragon campaign and more as a start in the Sword Coast. While I could take a typical starting point such as Lost Mine of Phandelver or the Dragon of Icespire Peak, I actually like how this particular campaign starts -- it is literally wrong place right time type of scenario. Phandelver puts you as a hired group of possible strangers, and Icespire Peak has you with a Witcher-esque job board to punt you into the story gently. They all are easily large branching points, but Hoard of Tiamat is one of the few stories that is literally wrong place right time.
You are thrust into the thick of things immediately and forced to make a choice. Do something, or stand aside and do nothing? To that end I want to start a campaign here, and see where the dust settles.
There is no set time for posting/play/combat because I am a disabled adult who suffers from severe chronic migraines so I'm not always able to be on the computer, on top of working a high intense and difficult job as it is. The only request is that you post at least once a week, at most twice a week, and at least three times per week if we are in the middle of a combat situation. This is to keep the story going. I will attempt to do the same. Discord can be used for combat rolls/quicker map updates/quicker interactions in combat/out of character interactions and updates as necessary if the party wants. The majority of interaction will be on DnDBeyond Forums.
How to apply
I'm looking for anywhere between 3-6 players in total. Game will start depending upon depth of interest. If things are slow and interest is slow, game will start at 3 players and recruiting will close at 6. We'll see how interest racks up. There is no need to try and "party build" because it all is up to you and your choices how things will work out. Submit a character via PM or as a response to this post. I'm looking for basics for now -- a name/age/race, a class, a background (that can be tied into the Hoard of the Dragon Queen or not), and a basic summary of your play style (PbP, Discord, Hybrid). Accepted characters will be listed below.
Once you are accepted you will be given access to the campaign link, please put your character in the campaign. Characters that are accepted will have rolled stats. I typically have players roll 4d6, dropping lowest d6 roll, 7 times. You will drop the lowest score in total to get your 6 stats scores. Allocate your stats as you desire. Any adjustments after can be made upon discussion. I do accept homebrew classes/races/items/skills as long as they are clearly well thought out and not game breaking. I also accept Unearthed Arcana and all supplemental material for class/race/items/skills.
You will be given a link to Discord if you so desire, just so that we are able to keep in contact easier, even if we don't run with a hybrid game. Discord link will be shared upon acceptance. You will also need to either share an image you want as a character token, or to tell me to use the image on your DnDBeyond character sheet for a character token, in the case of combat maps. I am moderately knowledgeable about DnD so I am here to help any new players.
NEW PLAYERS ARE WELCOME
Please sign your application with dragons became cats so that I know you read the above completely. If you have any questions please ask. Any changes or things I feel I've missed will be added/updated to this thread. Once we have the starting players a Campaign Thread will go live. I look forward to playing with you!
Edits to this thread: It was pointed out to me that I had mistakenly typed 4d4 instead of 4d6. This has been corrected.
UPDATE
Due to life getting in the way we are somewhat restarting this campaign. Essentially all new players will start already within Greenest in the middle of the dragon attack. New characters will be within the keep already helping people fortify and protect. All players are now at level 2 when they are in the Keep. This means that you have successfully reached the keep itself, either before the attack started, or after the attack started, or somewhere in the middle of the attack. The campaign thread will be linked to you upon successful acceptance into the campaign. Play will start once again when I have a minimum of 3 players, current player count is 2.
Players with a strikethrough under accepted are no longer a part of the campaign. They were former members and you may hear current players reference them.
Accepted Players
Karen Garrus - Player Gaiou Galdrum Bofdann - Player DarthDrizzt Gavoi Kfeenfinder - Player A_P_Michael Pardot - Player Kevtr0n Baerdain Fireforge - Player Houndarchon7 Lord Vitre - Player Faux_Beau Thurfir Hawat - Kevtr0n Wolfstine - Stormbringer4729 Steven Collins - FrekorSummers Gae-Al Spirit-Whisperer Ogolakanu - Kayla181 Akta - CoatiSalvia
I've been wanting to play a druid for a while, and this could be a good place for him.
Quick backstory: Pardot was captured and taken as a slave in the underdark. Though he managed to escape his captures, he couldn't escape the underdark itself. While wandering around in the dark, he lived mostly using the light from his conjured flame, and conjured berries to survive. Trying to find the exit over the next, who knows how long... weeks? months?... he tried to sabotage some underdark slave pens from time to time. Finally making his way out he finds himself in the town of Greenest just as things are getting interesting...
dragons to cats??! how'd that happen?
I'd prefer pure DDB only instead of Discord, but it could work as well. Also, rolling 4d4 for stats? Not d6? Just checking... is that correct?

It's d6. I mistyped.
Also welcome to the campaign. Same for @A_P_Michael
@Faux_Beau You are still missing information. Read through the post thoroughly if you are really interested. I don't want to deny anyone, but I want to make sure everyone has read through everything, not skimmed it. I've had enough of these games fail for that reason in the past.
Backstory - Bendrak is more or less a drunk loser. But he's well liked enough in spite of that, and has had some lucky breaks over the years such that his village considers him some kind of chosen one hero. He can't hold down a job with the town guard, but manages to get pulled in for special missions that invariably go well, and promptly drink up his pay. Everyone knows if he just gets his shit together, he'd be a great warrior. He's always put it off, hoping the tavern serving girl he secretly loves will fall for him and solve his problems, but after seeing her with a fellow bar patron, he drinks too much, gets in a fight, and ends up spending the night in the care of the town guard. Not for the first time, but this time the fight resulted in the building burning down, killing several customers. It was an accident, but one everyone knows Bendrak was ultimately responsible for. Once sober, and thoroughly embarrassed, he hears rumors of some terrible beast. Eager to see the "big city" and redeem himself, he gathers his things and sets out. Someday he will return and show the fair Mary Waitrose he is truly a hero.
Play Style - Hybrid is fine. I've played pbp on both forums and Discord before, and am on Discord regularly but usually just on mobile.
