Hello All! I am a first-time dm, long time player trying out the play by post format. I will be running an adventure starting at level 1 in the Sword Coast town of Amphail. The town is a ranching community that also serves as a retreat for some of Waterdeep's most powerful noble houses, where they can get away from the city, relax, and occasionally hide away some of their unscrupulous dealings or misbehaving children. The adventure will be for 4-5 level 1 characters.
Here are the ground rules I am hoping to use for this campaign. Please look them over to make sure we're on the same page.
1. I am hoping for a good mix of social, exploration, and combat interactions.
2. For combat, each turn will take no more than one day. You may either post once per day, or I will use standing orders you give your character (i.e. Protect the Wizard, Attack the closest enemy, Dodge.) Social and Exploration encounters will be more flexible since not every player will need to engage in every encounter.
3. Flexible Initiative: To facilitate play-by-post, flexible initiative will be used. At the beginning of encounters, everyone will role initiative. The enemy will share one initiative roll. Any PC who roles higher than the enemy will go once before the enemy, then the enemy will go. After that, all PCs will go in whatever order they choose again. Then the enemy goes, then all PCs again, etc.
4. XP will be used.
5. Killing all the enemies may not be the only solution to a problem. Therefore, XP can still be earned through creative avoidance or resolution of encounters.
6. Inspiration will be liberally given for good roleplay and creativity.
7. Homebrew requires approval, and if approved, may be used by NPCs within the campaign. All sourcebooks are allowed though!
8. I will strive for one post a day minimum during weekdays, and will communicate if there will be a delay.
Edit: Thanks to Pertuie for requesting clarification: Please use point-buy for your stats.
You didn't mention what you are using for deciding stats, yet you already got quite a few applications. I'm planning on making mine as well, but I wanted to confirm that you're looking for Point-Buy for ability score generation just like everyone so far seems to be doing or if you wanted something else instead.
Thanks all! I am currently reviewing all your character ideas and trying to consider which characters would make the best party. You will receive a message from me with a final decision by tomorrow. 01/21/2021
Hello All! I have considered all the character submissions, and you all made it extremely difficult for me to decide! I have had to expand the party to 7 characters, but I don't think that will be as big an issue in this format as it could be in person. I will update the top post with the character links of all the players that have been selected. To everybody else, thank you for your interest, and I hope to play with you as well someday soon!
Next, I will be writing short intro scenes to set the stage for your characters. I'll set up multiple mini-stories with different subgroups of the party and set a scene where you can introduce your character, form some relationships with other party members, and flex those PbP chops! I think I'll place all of them on separate threads, then introduce them back to the main thread afterward. I'll talk to you all soon!
