I have had good success with Nightcafe, which at the moment is semi-free (you can pay for better quality and more options but can play around for free if you go slowly).
It's reasonably good though struggles with more abstract phrases and sometimes defaults to beautiful scenery or epic action shots when you're after something completely different. Made a good pic of one of the PCs in my game. I asked for a shop full or trinkets and magic items, and got a man standing in full plate armour posing dramatically with a glaive crackling with lightning. Aside from the armour not being blue, it was unsettlingly perfect for one of the PCs!
Don’t use AI, it’s gutting the artist industry. Find someone who can draw. It’s both better for humanity and you’ll get better art.
The biggest problem there is the downpayment.
Don't get me wrong - if any of my DMs Guild stuff takes off then I will definitely invest in it, but AI is a good way to get relatively alright art for a project you don't want to put money into from the outset.
My plan is to use AI art for mine to start with and then move onto supporting artists for my later (and presumably better) projects!

But… aren’t you an artist?!?
I am a middling to mediocre artist. I haven't a clue how to even start making the level of art I see in D&D publications. And frankly, I feel like if AI uses my art for the basis of things then it'll probably drag it down quicker!
I want my publications to have beautiful cover art like I see in official D&D books, and sadly the only way I can do that right now is 1: sacrifice everything I want to buy for myself, my house, or my family this month and hire an artist, or B: use an AI art generator.
I'll be honest, AI is only good for generic stuff. I've tried making things like a giant blob of mozarella eating a suspended knight, but alas, I had to draw that one myself, and the results I would describe as Passable. At best. And I suspect the art quality may be part of the reason the Steepfield Cheese Chase hasn't sold more than 2 copies!
Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of this:
but I am also acutely aware that it looks amateurish.
I dunno, looks pretty good to me. Is it the same as the other stuff one sees? No, but it doesn’t look bad at all. I think if you had just put a little more detail on the knight and a few more sharp edges to sell the armored look a little better it would be better, but it works.

Thankyou, I do keep meaning to try and find some tutorials for the style of art I want to learn, but it's nice to hear positive feedback on it!

I wonder if you would still have the same attitude if instead of just AI artwork the AI was also creating DMs Guild content like modules and character sheets and whatnot? How would you react if your DMs Guild content had no chance to take off due to AI generated content flooding the market?
To a degree I can definitely see uses for AI generated art, I can sort of understand people using it to generate quick mock ups for personal use or maybe put the finishing touches on something that was mostly created by a person, but I do think using AI to generate art to be posted on art sites like Deviantart or even to be used in products sold commercially as if it was your own work is more than a little scummy. I know I cannot stop people from doing this but I don't have to like it either.
I am no artist - I have great idea in my head for how things should look, but 0 ability to draw them. I can only write them. For me, the AI is to use in my homebrew campaigns, and I would much rather have a good artist do some drawings and make $$ for them.
Just thought I'd throw it out there, I have decided to stop using AI art generation and get back to the longer but more rewarding approach of drawing it myself (or using stock art)!
Did some research and noticed a few things I really didn't like (Nightcafe's default prompts include "trending on Artstation" and artist names).
I will be spending some time drawing replacements for my AI art stuff on DMs Guild, and then accept that doing it slower but properly is better!

Either you're crisply enthusiastic or this is an AI bot advertising an AI bot... which is mildly concerning in an uncanny valley sort of way...
I do have a suggestion! You should find a pencil and piece of paper, and start ~~drawing~~. Or, find an artist to commission, and avoid supporting the AI craze built on theft.

Hope this helped!
As mentioned earlier, it makes sense to use AI at the very beginning of the project, because it is not known how well the work on it will go. Learning how to draw in a day or two will not work, and hiring an artist can be difficult.

I am always looking for some good artwork for my homebrew campaigns, as I cannot draw worth a d--n. Any suggestions for some free AI artwork creators?

Yes, I have a suggestion for AI Art creaotors. It is a very powerful tool. So download Mirror AI now. I think that i gave a good answer.
