Chapter One: Festival and Fire
It is Starday, the 21st of Rova, in the year 4707. The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the Autumnal Equinox. The small town of Sandpoint has drawn visitors from all over Varisia to commemorate the new Sandpoint Cathedral, including yourselves. The day has been filled with welcoming speeches, festival fun and games, street food, and the lively consumption of ale. Banners and flags are displayed on buildings and fences, adding colorful variety to the town’s visage. Thousands of swallowtail butterflies--considered the children of the goddess Desna--fly through the air, having been unleashed upon the town just before lunchtime. Lunch was provided by the three taverns of Sandpoint, with the Rusty Dragon offering their remarkable curry-spiced salmon, the White Deer putting up their peppercorn venison, and the Hagfish providing their famous lobster chowder.
As sunset approaches, many of the festival’s attendees migrate to the town square, where Father Zantus has taken the central podium, preparing to consecrate the new cathedral. The sound of several dozen conversations quiet down as the priest clears his throat to speak.
Suddenly, a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises--high pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as a stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted with shrill, scratchy voices….
Goblins chew and goblins bite Goblins cut and goblins fight Stab the dog and cut the horse Goblins eat and take by force!
Goblins race and goblins jump Goblins slash and goblins bump Burn the skin and mash the head Goblins here and you be dead!
Chase the baby, catch the pup Bonk the head to shut it up Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed We be goblins! You be food!
Ssej doe snot really understand the necessity of all the revelry that is going on in the town he has wandered to but it is a distraction. And the food is plentiful and the taste is better than anything he has had in quite sometime. Though he would prefer his venison a lot rarer than it is at least the spice is tasty. As his teeth open wide to rip another large bite out of the haunch he is gripping in his hand. The row of teeth filling his green snout tearing into the flesh while the orange frill going from the top of his head down to the tip of his tail gently blows in the wind.
He pushes himself out from the wall and grabs a drink from a passing cart and you can see a towering and extremely well muscled lizardfolk with green scaly skin with splotches of darker green dotting his body. If anyone pays any particular attention to the large lizardfolk you can see that his eyes never rest and continues to dart here and there looking at everything.
He tenses at the first scream and then you can see him running in the direction of the second scream as he hears the song over the rising over the scream. Anyone looking at him now would not want to be on the other side of that intent stare.
Berdach Varga was slowly moving through the crowd of people, looking for a likely target to get a little more coin from. At 6'2" tall, the gray-skinned half-orc towers over most of the people in the crowd, but, his build is fairly thin for one of his breed. Rather than pushing his way past people, Berdach moves silently through the crowd, gliding into the small gaps in the crowd, barely brushing against the people he is moving past.
As the priest takes the stage, Berdach noted a man who appeared to be a merchant, with a bulging purse hanging from his belt. Muttering a prayer to Calistria, the rogue began to move toward his intended target when the first scream split the air. In the time it took Berdach to look in the direction of the scream, a couple individuals had moved between him and his target. Once more the rogue began to move around the couple to get closer to his intended payout, when more screams are heard. At this point, Berdach heard the chant and the crowd began to move away from the stage toward the chant.

Rudi was enjoying himself quite nicely. Now he’ll just have to enjoy himself a little differently.
Rudi might draw attention only as a curiosity, perhaps his clothing is a little odd. He wears a blue coat with large wooden buttons, buttoned up tight. Blue pants and leather gloves that are the sort of pale brown that almost look yellow. A matching hat - pointy with a wide brim - sits on his head, giving shade to his face and eyes. His walking stick is worn smooth from long use. All in all, he looks like a bit of a hillbilly.
As the chaos erupts, he holds the walking stick between himself and the oncoming horde of teeth and terror.
Nerra wandered the festival, sampling food and drink freely. Her long blond hair was loose to well past her shoulders, blowing softly in a light breeze, even if there was no breeze to be had. Her blue eyes twinkled with excitement as she listened to performers, watched people, and just enjoyed this holiday.
As the first scream rang out she would frown in the direction, but as the dog went down, blood pooling, she would start to move towards it. Then she would hear the song and pause in concern.

Corallon moved slowly about the festival, feeling a little awkward among so many people, so many different sorts of races, so many odors and aromas. The secluded glen that had been the only world he'd known most his life seemed so far away now. And yet he also was fascinated at all that he saw. His eyes went wide when the cloud of butterflys filled the air--that was a remarkable sign from the goddess herself! This was a good place! He held out his hand and several of the beautiful insects alit on him for a moment before flying on. The encounter left him feeling remarkably at ease, one with the world around him.
Then, all that was shattered by screams and a harsh song of fear and evil. The towering firbolg inhaled deeply and moved toward the sound of oncoming goblins, eager to stop them so that no more animals--or people--might get hurt. He swung his shield into place and took his warhammer in hand. He looked to the sky and saw a few butterflys still within sight. "Desna give me strength," he whispered to himself.
Nerra and Ssej, you're up first! As the crowd spreads out, fleeing the small goblins, you can see three of them running through the crowd. They have yet to focus on you, opting instead to attack the nearest festival-goers. They are all within one turn's movement of yourselves.
Nerra narrows her eyes at one of the goblins, then lifts a hand and sends a blast of power at the goblin... eldritch blast Attack: 14 Damage: 5 plus 2 thunder from Jeni's wrath.
She then uses her bonus action to shove another goblin with a mental push, knocking it back a few feet. DC 13 STR save or be pushed 5 feet away from her.

Ssej will grin greedily and charge the nearest goblin leaning in to bite it around its neck and then swing his tail out to hit the next nearest goblin.

Nerra fires a blast of eldritch energy at one of the little creatures, and even the goblin (gobA) seems surprised when the blast catches its sturdy--if crude-looking--shield. Another goblin (gobB) goes to bite at a woman's ankle, and Nerra tries to push it back. STR save: 11
The goblin is pushed back in mid-air, falling and landing on its back. It is knocked prone.
Ssej rushes in greedily and manages to bite one of the goblins (gobC), but his tail misses his second target.

OOC: I'm not sure which goblin is most hurt, but Corallon tries to suss it out.
Corallon is dimly aware of other brave souls stepping up to intercept the goblins. He knows that Desna works in mysterious ways and that allies may come from all directions and any sorts. His gaze darts from goblin to goblin, looking for one that has already suffered a wound or two.
Upon spotting the goblin, he murmurs a prayer to Desna, letting the lady of the stars know that it is time for at least one goblin to find its path to the next world. He points at the goblin, and a quiet sound peals through the air. "Twilight time for you,"Corallon murmurs.
Cast Toll the Dead on injured goblin. Must make DC Wis 14 or take 1d12 necrotic damage if injured, 1d8 if not injured.

Before Ssej can even make it to gobA, the goblin is blasted to bits by Nerra's spell! With the immediate threat dealt with, you are able to take in the chaos around you. Goblins are running everywhere, cutting at ankles with their dogslicers, jumping on people and biting them with their horrendous teeth, and chanting their disturbing little songs...
Kill the people! Slay their beasts! Take their things! Eat their meats! Feast until you’ve had your fill Of the corpses goblins killed!
Suddenly, an unattended wagon that was carrying fuel for the sunset bonfire goes up in flames! Three goblins wielding torches emerge from behind the wagon, as does one goblin carrying a small drum that seems to be leading the song. The torch-carrying goblins see you and, with glee, charge to attack you.
Nerra doesn't even see the arrow until her side erupts in a fountain of pain. Glancing down she notices the arrow sticking out of her, blood leaking and soaking into her tunic and leathers.

Rudi will raise his staff, and chant a few words in Draconic as three near-invisible knives appear floating around the head of his staff. All three launch towards the goblin with the drum.
