Name: Gideon Blackburn Race:Human (Variant) Class: Fighter (going Eldritch Knight) Background: Soldier Description: Black hair, going gray. In his mid-30's. Evidence of a once athletic build, but starting to let himself go. Backstory: Gideon Blackburn was born and raised in Cormyr. His life was a relative study of mediocrity. Growing up on a farm, he couldn't wait to get away from his overbearing mother and quietly judgmental father. As the second son, he was expected to join the military or the church. He was elated to leave the farm and join the famed Purple Dragons, but he soon learned the military was nothing like the tales of battle and glory that he had grown up on. It was a lot of sitting around, following by short periods of intense fear and panic.
Unfortunately or fortunately--depending on how you looked at it--he was assigned as an assistant to the War Wizard Falthenaus. Falthenaus was and older higher ranking wizard. Gideon initially thought this meant good prospects for his career, but he found out soon that what this meant was that Falthenaus spent most of his time in strategic and operational planning meetings, leaving Gideon to try to keep from falling asleep while standing guard outside. Meanwhile, all of his peers from boot camp were getting experience on the battle field and gaining promotions--he always seemed to gloss over the ones who had died. One perk, though, of serving Falthenaus was exposure to magic and some small skill therein (Magic Initiate). He even learned how to summon his own familiar, in order to keep himself entertained.
Eventually, Falthenaus retired, and Gideon was offered a chance to head north to investigate rumors of Giants. Gideon leapt at the chance to finally prove himself in the field, away from the headquarters tent.
(I also thought that if one of the magic users wants to be from Cormyr, it could make sense that Gideon would be assigned to them as a guard to protect them when they were sent to investigate).

Yvrin was taught by the well heeled scholars who raised him at the cloister he grew up in. This cloister was dedicated to not a single god but rather whatever gods scholars fight like learning about and/or working for, kinda like a religious university. The various scholars come and go but a few remain permanantly. He's not sure WHY he was given to these scholars to raise him, but knows there must be something special because he was always treated reverently and given the best training and education. However, recently he's been having dreams in which it appears somebody is trying to speak to him, but the voice is too hard to make out. After attempting (and failing) to persuade the scholars to finally tell him what about him entailed all the extra attention he was given since birth, and really anything about his strange circumstances, he snuck away one night because he could no longer bear the intense but unclear dreams he was having, which seemed to suggest it was time to find out about his past. Life hasn't been easy since then. He's used to following the rules and life on the road doesn't exactly follow the rules... (somewhat reminds me of lyra from the HIS DARK MATERIALS series a bit, minus the rule following of course, now that I think of it)
