Elro smiles sadly as he replied to Durnham “Well he had maybe traveled further than you know, but I have a feeling that you will learn more of that in time. It’s not my story to tell, my friend. But I do know that he would have wanted you to have this” he hands you a simple iron key “it’s the key to his cabin – your cabin now”
On the question of Tulgi and the potential for wider illness, he nods grimly “It does seem that way. At first we thought Urgon had been poisoned or cursed while on his travels, as he had only been back a few days when the signs started to show. But then seeing Tulgi like that, well, it makes me worry that we may have an infectious ailment on our hands. That could indeed be bad news for the village unless a cure is found – the village’s priests of Moradin and Corellon tried all they could but to no avail.
You may find clues at your uncle’s cabin, or maybe by speaking to Tulgi. Her cabin is on the southern outskirts of Palebank, she normally kept to herself. And if she isn’t in then, well” he puts a reassuring hand on Qidira’s shoulder “then my little friend here might be able to...open some doors for you”
He looks a little pained at the suggestion of breaking in, but you have known him long enough (even those new to the village) to see that he considers the consequences of not finding out more about the mystery affliction to be disastrous.
He smiles encouragingly at the gnome’s showcase of her talents, then looks at each of you in turn.
“Thank you Qidira, I know that you have skill. Winterwalker, your knowledge of this land will be invaluable, especially if the trail leads beyond Palebank. Brandon, I’ve been around enough soldiers to see that you can handle yourself and will look after my friends. And Durnham, you’re so much like your uncle that I know you won’t give up. It is an easy decision to entrust this task – this village’s future - to you and your party”
Qidira's face grows solemn as they've been given a great responsibility. "If I can help in any way, I will." She says with a new confidence in her tone. Having a purpose is something she's never experienced before. Hopefully these new people will see that she's worth their trust. She looks to the others. "Do you all stay here in town, or do we leave from here for this cabin? I mean if I may come with you?"
Brandon greets the others with a nod and a disarming smile. “I shall do my best to live up to your expectations Elro, and to keep your friends safe. I count them among my friends as well, if they will have me.”
“If this affliction is unknown to the priests, it appears to be an affront to death itself, I would like to learn more about it. It appears we have two leads. I would suggest going to meet Tulgi first, and hope we are not too late to find out more from her first-hand.”
"This seems more than a danger to the people, but a danger to the very land. I will go as well to be sure there is no threat to the Greying Wildlands." Ressys says.
He looks down at Qidira, "We will have you, you will serve a greater purpose than yourself? Perhaps you will even find yourself. If you know yourself, there’s nothing left to know."
He looks over to Kotar "Will you join us Kotar? We could travel again for a time."
Durnham accepts the key from Elro and pockets it. He looks at Elro with a flat expression on his face and says “I don’t think I ever really knew my Uncle. Everyone else seems to know more about him than I.”
”What were Urgon’s symptoms? What happened to him? I’ll look into this illness. I need to know what happened to him and I can’t let that happen to more people. The Moonshadow’s are still here and they’re as good as family to me. Kotar will you come? I know this isn’t your place or home but your strength and combat skills may be helpful, plus you may know some things that Winterwalker doesn’t.”
He nods to Brandon and Qidira “I agree Brandon, if Tulgi has some symptoms he may have spent time with Urgon before he passed. Maybe my Uncle said something that could be a clue about what happened. Qidira your skills would be very helpful. Please come along. Whatever is in my Uncle’s cabin... or My cabin I guess... whatever is there will be there later. With Tulgi, time may be limited.”
"There are many things I do not know. But I know myself and that is enough."
Ressys looks up at the sky. "The sun is low in the sky, sinking behind the graves. I think we should visit Tulgi now. If she is sick we need to talk to her before she passes on. Your uncle's cabin is not going anywhere."
“I know hot it is, to admire someone like that.”The Goliath says thinking of his grandfather. A sad smile taking hold of his lips, he bend his knees enough so his right hand can reach Durnham’s shoulder. “Your uncle called for you while he was fighting this thing. I don’t think he saw you as a child anymore and I think he would be proud of you.”
He raised to his full height and looked to Ressys, the first friend he made outside of his tribe. The Firbolg suggests meeting with Elro Aldataur and asks of Kotar if he would keep travel with the group. Before the Fighter had a chance to answer, Aldataur appears with the Gnome he had seen before. Qidira was her name and she soon enough described her abilities. A Rogue. Another thing he had only met in Uthodurn. Back at his clan almost everyone was either a Fighter or a Barbarian. The Skywatcher and her few apprentices were basically the only exception.
As Elro explained his worries and Durnham received the key to his uncle’s cabin, a plan started to take shape. The Warrior found interesting how they didn’t really assume he was part of the plan, but rather asked if he wished to be. Maybe they still felt somewhat intimidated by his appearance. Admittedly he did look more aggressive than most.
“I’ve never even left, Brandon.”He answered the human with nod of his head. For his purpose he could not simply retreat in the face of a challenge and more important than that, he would never leave a friend that could use some help. Never again. “From my part, we’re a team and I second you. Better start with Tulgi.”
Durnham looks to Kotar and Brandon. “Your help is appreciated but I would understand if you declined. I didn’t want to assume you would agree to risk yourself for people who aren’t your own. thank you.”
Qidir gazes up at Ressys nodding at the wise Firebolg , "I will strive for purpose and to know myself better," she replies then listens as he addresses the others.
She observes the key for the cabin safely tucked away, watches regret for moments passed cross the dwarf's face, then as Durnham remarks of the symptoms inclines her head in agreement to accompanying them. Looking up to the sun, she ponders the lateness of the day and then smiles when she hears that the Goliath will come too.
"I wonder what is known of the symptoms myself and how should we protects ourselves if Tulgi has been exposed. We cannot help if we become ill ourselves."Remembering terrible illness that can pass between the poor of the cities just from close proximity. She turns to Durnham, "But I agree, time is of the essence, Tulgi may be in great danger even as we discuss. I will happy to help in any way that I may."
Tulgi is not known to you, other than she moved to Palebank a few years ago - possibly with a sister.
Elro shrugs at Qidira's question about the mystery illness. "That's all we really know about it - no idea how it is caught or passed on. Just that the afflicted become increasingly pained and slowed in their movements, before finally turning to ice"
He smiles at the exchanges between you and says "I felt confident knowing that Durnham and Winterwalker would be here, but seeing the five of you fills me with certainty that Palebank will be saved. I think you are wise to seek Tulgi first; she seemed in an awful hurry to get away from me and may take vital information with her if not questioned soon"
You move on to Tulgi's cabin using the directions provided by Elro, arriving as the long shadows are turning into dusk. The snow-covered cabin looks peaceful and quiet from the outside. Its windows are shuttered, and a steady stream of smoke piping out of the chimney indicates a roaring fire within.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Qidira eyes the smoke streaming from the chimney and looks over to Durnham. "Perhaps we'll only need to knock after all?" She adjusts the pack on her back and enjoys the momentary halt after their quick trip to the cabin. Eying the surrounding terrain, she realizes for the first time that she's never been this far from a bustling town and suddenly ponders what the wilderness may hold. Quelling a momentary fear within her, she brings her mind back to the others who have experience out here and don't seem concerned.
perception22 for anything she might notice as well. Qidira looks from near Ressys unsure what to expect in the surroundings.
As Ressys knocks at the door, Brandon glances over the outside of the cabin and the surrounding area, looking for anything out of the ordinary. A large raven chatters noisily in the branches of a nearby tree. Brandon gives it an annoyed look and continues watching the cabin.
Durnham stands to the side and feels relieved that he doesn’t have to be the one to speak first. Talking to new people always makes him nervous and awkward. He looks around the house noting the smoke from the chimney. He pulls his coat tighter about himself and shuffles from foot to foot, stamping his feet into his boots to warm them up as he shoves his gloved hands into his coat pockets.
“To my eyes they are the people of a friend. That is as close as my own kin.”That was true, but there was also the fact that for better or for worse this mysterious sickness could be a chance for him to better his name. Until them he was just a Goliath traveling alone, muscle for hire. After solving the mystery of Paleblank he would be a local hero of sorts. That would be an important step on helping his actual kind. Not that they will be so agreeable, he thought listening Aldataur.“I’ll do my best to prove you right.”
And then their journey to Tulgi’s cabin started. Along the way Kotar swept the skin of his head from any trace of melted snowflakes and put his hood again. It was not a matter of cold, but rather avoiding water from running through his scalp to his clothes. They arrived with the first shadows of dusk, each one of the five as silent as the other.
Qidira was the first to speak and soon after their arrival. Both she and Brandon seemed to take a moment to look around and Durnham tried to warm himself, burying deeper into his winter gear. The Fighter believed it was a good idea to have the Wizard speak first, but before he could say anything Ressys knocked at the door. There was smoke coming from the chime, so more likely than not Tulgi was home. Let’s hope she’s fine.
Qidira and Brandon scout the cabin and its surrounding area; the quiet gnome from the safety of Ressys’s shadow, Brandon being a little more adventurous and moving around the outside.
Between the pair of them they notice that there is a standard tumbler lock on the front door and that each wall has a single window at torso (for a human) height. The windows all appear to be latched – but possible to open with the right tools and a little skill. All the windows are obscured by a dark curtain on the inside.
As the recce gets underway, Ressys tries to hail your quarry “Tulgi! It is Winterwalker, I have come to check on you”
Durnham and Kotar stand watch, the dwarf working his feet to keep warm and the goliath standing as still and impervious as a mountain.
After a short pause a female voice calls out from inside “Go away Winterwalker! I have no business with visitors today!”
Qidira doesn't think the door will be a problem considering standard lock with a little effort, but assesses how she might be able to access the windows from the outside, noting trees or containers possibly nearby. She'd prefer not to ask for a 'boost' from the bigger members but she might be needed after all to gain entry if Tulgi is declining visitors because she's already ill.
(She takes not actions at this time, only observes waiting)
"Tulgi! Come to the door please. I need to check on you. I've heard you are sick. Perhaps there is a way for me to ease your suffering? I can't help you unless I can see you. Come to the door. Durnham is here as well."
Quieter he says to Durnham,
"She's a fellow dwarf. Help me convince her to come to the door."
