Kirari snarls at him, "We're asking the questions! Who in the Cult is paying you? Or perhaps you'd like to answer these question to Nighthill instead?"
Marcus is still pretty intimidated by Kiari, but he lowers his hands from his voice. He says, “You are with Nighthill!! I met a couple of cultists a few days ago on the road. Once they saw I wasn’t interested in their religion and dragon worship or whatever, they offered me 10% of whatever I could loot from Greenest. I think they said someone named Rez-something was in charge. There is also this big Dragonborn calling the shots tonight. He sent some kobolds to give me my map and bags.” Marcus looks over to the Keep and says, “Hey, I am worth way more than that kobold. And I’ve seen the light here. Let me go with y’all. I’ll even tell Nighthhill you are all doing great. No need to worry about Marcus!”
Inglenook steps up to Marcus. "As far as I'm concerned, anyone who is willing to take advantage of people already in dire circumstances by stealing from them. Stealing whilst families and children run for their lives.......is utter scum." And he swirls his quarterstaff above his head and attempts to bring it crashing down on Marcus' temple to knock him out.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
After Kiari's interrogation, Inglenook's quarterstaff cracks into Marcus' skull, and he falls into a crumpled heap next to the three bags. Cale is the first to peer inside the bags.
For Cale:
You are able to palm a small ruby pendant without anyone in the group noticing. Since you are the first to the bags, you may show them to the party, but I'll share the treasure with you first. These items would be spread out across the three: There are some larger items here than in the last fight with 3 silver candlesticks, 5 bronze statues, 2 paintings with ornate bronze frames, and 4 golden goblets. There are also 4 silver bracelets, 2 gold necklaces, and 10 beaded necklaces with varying trinkets attached to them.
Cale (and others wishing to look) would also clearly see that the bandits are carrying some rations on their belts and their crumpled up mercenary contracts.
Kirari reaches forward and gathers the rations and contracts from the mercenaries, passing them around for all to share and view. "Should we haul all these guys up to the keep to face trial or however justice in done in this town? Might give the people here some hope and us a bargaining chip?" Then looks at the contract remaining in her hands to attempt to gather some more information.
Cale indicates a pile of loot that he has constructed after going through the bandits' possessions: "Look here, we got with 5 silver candlesticks, 8 bronze statues, 1 painting with ornate bronze frame, and 6 golden goblets. There are also 1 silver bracelets, 6 gold necklaces, and 16 beaded necklaces with varying trinkets attached to them"
Cale will try to appraise the loot so that it can be split evenly: Intelligence 20
Travis's normally grim coutenance smiles as Inglenook cracks the overly talkative thief-for-hire over the head and sends him falling to the ground. He lets out a sharp, slightly harsh laugh. He turns to Kirari.
"Well done, Inglenook!"he says enthusiastically. "I was getting tired of his seemingly endless prattling."
He turns to Kirari. "Let us take them up to the keep, eh? I am certain it will help us in any negotiations--and we will learn much about this place by seeing how they handle prisoners like these."
Kirari sees that the contract does promise the mercenaries 10% of the loot with today's date as the start of the raid. It also has a seal stamped on it. The seal has a dragon on it with the name "Frulam Mondath" ringing the edges. The dragon seal looks fairly similar to the cultist insignia you saw earlier.
Cale could estimate the following about the loot:
The candlesticks would run about 3 silver pieces each The bronze statues would run about 16 copper pieces each The paining and frame may go for 4 copper pieces, The golden goblets would be worth 2 gold pieces each The silver bracelet would be worth 3 silver pieces The gold necklaces would be worth 2 gold pieces each And the beaded necklaces would be worth 1 copper pieces each.
"Good idea Travis" says Cale, starting to tot up an even split of the pile for everyone. "Maybe even a bounty or two among this bunch - we may have just accidentally earned some coin!"
Kirari reads the contract aloud to the others, then looks over the items. "I'm trying to balance the fact that these all belong to someone, though how to determine who legitimately is lost on me. Lets haul these idiots up to face punishment and either head back down and continue bashing raiders or find out where our talents are better suited from Nighthill."
Then glancing over at Inglenook giving an appraising look at him and his staff. "Remind me not to piss you off..."
Kirari takes out one of the looting maps and looks it over again. Knowing its not fine Cartography but using her stills with such, checks to see if there is anything more they missed on it. (Cartography Skill - as this isn't a fine work of map-making, she'd likely note more about accidental notations that might give away the map makers location, etc. She'll likely not be able to get much from such a poorly made map but will still try.)
Kiari would notice that these maps are similar to the others: There are red X marks on a half dozen houses to mark who should be raiding where. Today's date is also on the map, but not much else.
Also, at this point, the Keep is only about 50 yards away, and a loud trumpet blast rings out over the chaos. A guard on a megaphone shouts out to the surrounding houses: "Quickly, citizens, we must close the gate! More raiders are spotted on the horizon. If you seek shelter, you must come now!"
Kirari rushes forward to drop the captives inside the gates then turns to help any others trying to get inside quickly. Potentially arguing with the gate closers to get more in if needed to the last second.
If Kirari is able to grab a nearby Mule to aid them in their rush to the gate, she'll happily do so.
Travis looks about at the people trying to get into the keep, seeing if anyone is struggling, perhaps a young child or old person, and does his best to help a few stragglers get inside before the gates are closed. He goes about it in a very focused, workmanlike manner, waiting until the last minute to get himself inside.
The townspeople greet Kiari and Travis with their thanks. There are a few farm animals milling about the house near the keep due to the activities of the looters: 3 mules, 3 donkeys, and 8 chickens.
Could I get a Wisdom (animal handling) check to grab one of the animals and calm it?
A dwarf with a bright red beard is also helping the final townspeople inside and smiles at Travis and Kiari (and the rest of the party if they are helping, too). He motions them over.
(As soon as we see if Cale, Inglenook, and the other Cale want to enter the Keep, we can move around or talk to the dwarf, etc.)

Kirari slows her pace slightly as she approaches the mule(opting ironically for the less stubborn of the two and hopefully one with bit and bridle or a rope tied already to it). She grabs anything edible and appealing potentially to a Mule from her pack, softening her expression as much as possible. Looking for the one least disturbed by the chaos.(She may not have anything and have to grab a handful of grass nearby)."I need your help there friend. Would you help me? I have some food for you." She says offering it something to eat.animal handling18
Inglenook shuffles behind the others, hears the bellows of the guards at the gates and attempts to assist anyone along the way.
He brings out a lens, whispers into the frame and places his hand underneath. I greenish mirror image of his hand appears a few feet above him, and he uses the lens to move the hand towards the keep gates, hooking the index finger in a silent "follow me" gesture. He moves the hand around the crowds, pointing to the keep or holding the hand up if anyone is straying in the wrong direction. All this in the hope that during the chaos, people can still determine the correct direction through the panicked folk trying to get to safety.
Mage Hand
A spectral, floating hand appears at a point you choose within range. The hand lasts for the duration or until you dismiss it as an action. The hand vanishes if it is ever more than 30 feet away from you or if you cast this spell again. You can use your action to control the hand. You can use the hand to manipulate an object, open an unlocked door or container, stow or retrieve an item from an open container, or pour the contents out of a vial. You can move the hand up to 30 feet each time you use it. The hand can't attack, activate magic items, or carry more than 10 pounds.
