The weekend passes, and the next week arrives without delay. Despite thorough testing in the labs, Urzmaktok, Larine, Klok, and Ambre could not find anything wrong with the frogs. They are standard Sedgemoor poison dart frogs; whatever changed them is no longer in their system, and the growing properties do not seem to be triggered by any residual magic effects native to the bayou. You all notified Professor Sharpbeak of the incident in the FIrejolt. The owlin counselor confided in the students that the trunk attack's investigation turned up no evidence as to why one of the Rose Stage's costume trunks would suddenly animate, but at a mention of the strange black substance Ambre tried to investigate, Sharpbreak mentioned there was a similar substance on the trunk, but she had just assumed it was leather conditioner. She assures you that Campus Security will look into this; any possibility that the two incidents are connected should be taken very seriously. In the meantime, you all get back to your schooling.
Review exercises are wrapping up for your first exam in Magical Physiologies class; Professor Verelda Lang has spent the last few minute of class randomly asking students to answer questions regarding the current unit on slaadi. "... That's half-correct, Mister Bowen; you are right that red slaadi eggs implanted in a host creature eventually grow to be blue slaadi, but you forgot one key caveat. If the host is capable of casting what the Strixhaven Spell Cataloging System classifies as 'third level spells', the tadpole grows into a green slaad. Remember that key distinction, it will definitely be on the test.
"Alright, everyone, that concludes today's review. Next time we meet will be our first big exam on slaadi! I encourage you all to study; if not to pass the class, you should at least do it so that you may continue to participate in your extracurricular activities. Remember, anyone who fails an exam is required by Strixhaven bylaws to be tutored by a junior faculty member until they pass the next exam. That means no time for silkball, band, chess club, or your shift at the Bow's End. So, please study. Thank you, that is all. See you on Friday! Please study!"
It's time for our first exam phase of the campaign! Here are the rules.
First, we have to do the Studying Phase. Each of you please choose any skill that you can justify using for studying - such as a history check for remembering information in your notes, a [performance check to create helpful mnemonics, or a sleight of hand check to make up reminding gestures. The limit is your imagination. Roll a skill check using that skill. If you succeed the DC associated with the encounter, you get one reroll during the testing phase.
You can also choose to pull an all-nighter. You roll a skill check the same exact way, but if you succeed, you gain two rerolls for the testing phase. However, since you did not sleep the night before, you get one level of exhaustion, which grants you disadvantage on ability checks. Risk and reward, right?
Of course, you could just not study at all and rely strictly on your own intuition. You get no rerolls if you do not study,
If you choose to study as a group, each participant in the study session gets advantage on their studying checks! Please decide if you're studying on your own or with the group.
Immediately as the class finishes, Arvol leans over towards Aithne. (Surprisingly he was sitting right next to her!) "Hey, are you up for studying together for the exam? It really helped when we went over things last Friday at the Biblioplex." He glances around at his other friends, thinking he really ought to ask them to join as well. But he will wait to see what Aithne says first.
"I'd love to study with you." Aithne beamed at Arvol as she capped her inkwell, giving her notes a moment to dry before packing her things away. "I made study cards for each of the slaadi variants; their behavior, abilities, society, ecology, reproduction and history." She ticked each of the topics off on her fingers. Only when she was finished did she look faintly embarrassed. "I also color-coded them." She added, then flushed a light pink, raising her notebook to conceal the majority of her face. "...that's probably a little too much?" She admitted, looking self-conscious.
Arvol laughs. "Not at all! I'll take any advantage I can get." He himself just has his single notebook with charcoal pencil, which he rapidly puts into his bag. "I think it's all rather cute," he says. "Umm, and useful," he adds quickly. With everything packed he waits for Aithne to be ready. "So where should we go? The Biblioplex seemed to work well last time. But we could even find a quiet corner in one of the lounges at the dorm."

With the dire threat of not being allowed to visit Bow's End Aelyn leaves class with the full intention of actually doing some studying for the exam. He passes by Aithne and Arvol, not noticing them at first, playing an improvised up-tempo cheerful song on his lute, small cute slaadi in different colours dancing joyfully around him. "They are many different colours, blue and green and gray and reeeeeed, and if you ever meet a death slaad you will surely soon be dead." (OOC: Aelyn is planning to use performance during the study phase, making a song about the slaadi to help him remember what is necessary to pass the exam, not really aiming to be an expert on the subject though.) Aelyn stops as he notices his classmates standing close together looking cute as always. "Oh, yes, I was planning to study with Aurora somewhere in the commons, you can of course come along, but I rather think you two can manage without us." He says with a wink. "And don't forget to study now you two." He says with a stern look, then breaking out in a playful smile, before moving on to Aurora waiting outside.
Aelyn and Aurora will then find a nice spot in the commons where he will present his slaadi song to her after which they will actually study together for a while, Aelyn breaking out the occasional serenade during the sunny afternoon. The studying will the continue chambre séparée into the night, but for once Aelyn actually goes to sleep reasonably early. Performance: 17 + Student dice: 4 (I'm assuming Aelyn would get the performance student dice from playing with Aurora at Bow's End. :-) (Meh, not sure what is needed but can Aurora help him with the song giving him advantage?) (Oh, forgot Aurora gives advantage: 20 ) (OMG, these rolls, Aelyn's going to fail this miserably )

"The Biblioplex is a good idea." Aithne slipped a length of worn ribbon into her notebook, leaving the tattered end exposed to mark the current page before tucking the book away in her bag. "In case we need more reference materials. My notes should be fairly comprehensive, but there's no guarantee. If we wanted to spend more time together, we could always go back to the dormitories afterward?" She shouldered her bag and looked expectantly at Arvol.
When Aelyn passed them, she brought a hand to her mouth, hiding a smile behind her palm. "The song is actually quite good." She admitted to Arvol, a hint of laughter present in her tone. "I certainly hope it helps! Though what he's going to think of to rhyme with 'polymorphic' or 'implantation,' I'm not sure." Dropping her hand back to her side, she started toward the Biblioplex center, intent on finding an unoccupied study table.
Upon locating a quiet space, surrounded on three sides by heavy bookshelves, Aithne unpacked her bag, pulling free a thick stack of loose parchment that had been bound carefully with string. She pulled the tie and organized the parchment into four stacks, separating them by their primary colors: red, blue, green, gray, and black. "Black is for the death slaad, though I was worried that might be somewhat misleading since there have been reports of both black and white slaadi variants..."
((Aithne will be using historyto recall information from her study materials and since she is studying with Arvol, she would have advantage on the check. History: 24))
Klok leaves class looking for his friends to study with. He sees that Aithne and Arvol have paired up already, Aelyn seems to be waiting for someone else, Klok looks for Ambre to see if they'd like to study with him. Klok has been trying to use his natural affinity to nature to help him remember the differences between the Skaadis.
"Perfect! To the Biblioplex!" Arvol says with a laugh, suddenly feeling nervous though trying not to show it. At Aelyn's comment, he directs a momentary glare at him. "Of course we're going to study. You're the one that usually forgets studying. Singing love ballads all night won't get you far on the exam!" He teases.
He turns back to Aithne to see her expectant look. "Oh... umm... yea... hanging out back at the dormitories would be great. You know Aithne, you really can just drop by my room whenever you like. If you want to chat or hang out or whatever."
He stops talking suddenly and moves to head off to the Biblioplex. It isn't until they are outside he mentions Aelyn's song. "Yea. Aelyn's song was really good. I'm sure if he needs a rhyme he'll figure it out." Arvol sighs, then mutters somewhat under his breath. "Aelyn always seems to know what to say. "
He follows alongside Aithne to the Biblioplex. He chats a tiny bit with her about their other classes and one of the latest bits they'd covered in Archaeomancy. Once there he defers to her on selecting a table. He takes a chair next to her, pulling out his single notebook. He then watches her array of colored stacks as she prepares. "I almost feel like I'm cheating by studying with you. You're so organized and you put everything together so well. Anyhow, let's start this review."
Arvol spends the time reviewing notes. Even his own. Though not voluminous, he has very neatly written and concise notes on each text they read and each of Professor Lang's lectures. At the end though he insisted going through an analysis of the basics of slaadi and reasoning out the other information they had covered. Almost treating it like a puzzle to be fitted together, even though the professor had already given the answers. "Sorry if this is tedious. I just want to really know how this all fits together. Helps me when you get a real curveball question."
(Arvol is going to use Investigation on his check. Advantage for studying with Aithne. 11)
Having spent many hours in review, Arvol finally says, "Well, shall we head back to the dormitories? Take a tiny break before resting up for our exam?"
Aithne nodded wearily. "I don't think I can absorb any more information." She admitted, restacking her notecards and tying them off with the same piece of twine that had originally been used to organize them. The stack was returned to her bag, tucked alongside her textbooks. "If we continue, I think I'll just end up confusing the preferred habitats with the preferred hunting grounds of the red slaadi and switching the magical capabilities of the gray slaad and the death slaad altogether."
As they'd studied, her chair had gradually slid across the floor until it was nudged directly alongside Arvol's, putting them shoulder to shoulder. It wasn't a conscious move on her part, but at the moment, she was grateful for it. Aithne took advantage of the closeness by leaning into him, trusting that he'd keep her upright. "A break would be nice." She agreed. Despite her approval of the plan and rather than making a move to leave, she simply dropped her head onto his shoulder and took a moment to enjoy the quiet.
((I'll also use the Student Die, having just realized I used an applicable skill entirely by accident... History: 14 (original result) + 1))
"Wait, there are gray slaadi?" Arvol says, a mischevious grin coming to his face. Before Aithine can say anything he quickly adds, "I'm joking. I'm joking!"
Until the moment Aithne leaned into him, Arvol hadn't even realized they were sitting so close. He gently puts an arm around her to keep her steady and then is surprised as she puts her head on his shoulder. It was unexpected but not unwelcome. He takes a deep breath and just relaxes. If she wants to just stay, who am I to argue? He gazes down at her, a smile coming to his face as he admires her dark black hair. He can't help but take his free hand to softly brush a strand of hair that had strayed onto her cheek.

Aelyn studies with Aurora, but despite his best efforts he cannot focus on schoolwork when there is a beautiful woman right in front of him. Aithne and Arvol join forces and have a pretty successful study session, managing not to let unrelated conversation get them too off-track. Ambre and Klok study extensively, skillfully covering all the topics presented to them in the slaadi unit.
Everyone except Aelyn gets one reroll on their test thanks to their success in the studying phase.
The next day is a somewhat tense one as you all make your way to Magical Physiologies class. Most of your fellow students are anxiously arranging materials while trying to cram any last-minute information into their brains before the test begins. It is not long before Professor Lang arrives with a stack of tests in her hands.
"Good morning, class. I hope you're all ready for today's exam,"The dryad states. With a snap of her fingers, she conjures a swarm of colorful bayou moths. Each of the iridescent insects carries a test face-down to each student before returning to roost on Professor Lang as she continues her pre-test preamble. "Please do not turn over your exams until I instruct you to do so. You will have fifty minutes to complete this test. Any questions? ... No? Excellent. Well then, your time starts now. Turn over your tests, and best of luck."
It is now time for the Testing Phase! This exam on slaadi consists of two parts, and two skill checks are associated with each portion. Passing the test grants you a student die that you may use on checks made with the skills implemented in the exam; today's will be arcanaand insight. There are three different outcomes one can have during the testing phase:
If you succeed both checks, you answer all questions correctly and ace the test! This grants you two student dice that can be used on either arcana or insight checks.
If you only succeed one check, you pass the test. This grants you one student die that can be used on either arcana or insight checks.
If you fail both checks, you fail the test. This grants you no dice, and in addition you will not be able to benefit from extracurriculars or jobs until you pass the next test.
Anyone with rerolls can choose to use them at any point.
If you're feeling a little naughty and would like to cheat on the exam, you must succeed on both a deception and a sleight of hand check. If you succeed both of them, you are not caught cheating and you ace the test. However, if you fail even one of the checks, you are caught cheating and automatically fail the test. Rerolls gained for studying cannot be used for cheating checks.
Ready? Let's go!
The first portion of the exam requires you to answer several multiple-choice questions about red, blue, green, gray, and death slaadi. Please make an arcana check.
The second half of the exam requires you to write short essays on acceptable ways to keep slaadi calm during unexpected encounters. Please make an insight check.
Aelyn is really nervous over the exam, dropping his pen several times before getting started with the multiple-choice questions. He realizes his effort to study was in vain but he is not a cheater. Arcana: 19

Arvol seems fairly calm as he arrives for the exam, having walked hand-in-hand with Aithne from their last class. He gives her hand a quick squeeze before letting it go. "I know you'll do great Aithine," he says with a smile and then slips into his seat. Waiting for the exams to be distributed he glances around at the others in the class with a smile. When Aelyn drops his pen, he gives him a questioning look, furrowing his brow. He had only been teasing him about not studying with Aurora around, but maybe he was more focused on... other things?
Once Professor Lang says they can start, he digs into the multiple-choice section. (Arcana Check: 11 + Student Die (Historical Society): 3)

The multiple-choice section took Arvol a bit longer than he'd expected. He moves on to the essay portion, feeling a tiny bit less confident than he did initially. He thinks about the main points about dealing with slaadi that he wants to put down. Pretty simple, Aithine had them all laid out and ordered for each color. He begins to write. Aithne felt as though she'd swallowed a kaleidoscope of butterflies. Their little wings were fluttering so madly that her stomach was left rolling. What if she failed? As Professor Lang instructed them to turn over their exams, Aithne did so with trepidation. There was nothing for it now but to hope that she'd learned what she needed to.

Most of your fellow students are anxiously arranging materials while trying to cram any last-minute information into their brains before the test begins. It is not long before Professor Lang arrives with a stack of tests in her hands.
"Good morning, class. I hope you're all ready for today's exam," The dryad states.
Passing the test grants you a student die that you may use on checks made with the skills implemented in the exam; today's will be arcana and insight. There are three different outcomes one can have during the testing phase:

Rabbit Sebrica, Sorcerer || Skarai, Monk || Lokilia Vaelphin, Druid || Liivi Orav, Barbarian || Vanizi, Warlock || Britari / Halila Talgeta / Jesa Gumovi || Neital Rhessil, Wizard
Iromae Quinaea, Cleric || Roxana Raincrest, Rogue || Meira Dheran, Rogue || Qirynna Thadri, Wizard || Crisaryn Melkial, Sorcerer
