Snow catches a glimpse of the falling bag out of the corner of his eye, and with the skill of a practised juggler whips his hand out, deftly catching it mid air.
He looks at the bag curiously in his hand, and wonders if it might be something sinister, then glances over his shoulder to see who dropped it. He gives it a quick shake then looks at Varielky and Auger, shrugs and is about to open it…
Perception: 19. No need for a Slight of Hand check, I suppose.
Varielky notices Benita, and thus, she notices the bag as well. Unfortunately, however, she keeps her eyes on Benita until the very last possible moment, and by the time she thinks of catching the bag, it is already in the captain's hands.
"No, I doubt anyone was exaggerating the death count that day. Nearly all those who fought at the event died." She grits her teeth as she remembers the moment when everyone realised the fighters weren't playing dead anymore. When she remembers how Bali didn't block her attack as he should have. "The Amazighs found the public event a great opportunity to prove the potency of their poisons, as we found out later. At the time, however, all I knew - all I cared about - was the fact that all of them died, and in such a detestable manner. Had the gods not wished otherwise, I would have been part of the kill count too. Me, and my best friend." She feels as if something got stuck in her throat. And it takes her a moment to continue. "Benita, the woman who dropped the bag you're holding.
"But, if you think that's where the Amazighs' plot ends, you're greatly mistaken. They could not accept the fact that two of their victims were saved. It would harm the reputation of their poison, right? So they sent assassins to finish the job. We noticed them following us, so we decided to leave Ishi Ammah. However, they followed us and tried to execute their orders a few nights later." She remembers that night well. Oh, what a fool she was, following Benita the way she did. She could have spared the time to at least pick her shield up. "And then, again, only thanks to the gods' will did we survive the effects of their poisons." Her hand hovers over the hilt of her sword. "I have not been bothered by them again since, but... there's a lot of poisoned blood I would be happy to avenge if given the chance. If you ever see a Mr Abadolla who might seem like a manager of an arena, or something else... he was the one to organise all those atrocities. "
Auger is very interested to hear Varielky speak as he had only heard bits and pieces in the past.
"Benita was kind enough to drop by the bank for us as we reserved your boat. She is not our third but is also a very capable fighter should you come across need for help."Auger stands and walks over to Captain Das, his hand extended for the bag.
"These Amazighs who follow do not seem to be of the poisoning variety but we will handle them if needed."

Snow … glances over his shoulder to see who dropped it.
(OOC, Snow: Because the bag dropped at the moment you were about to pass under the stone bridge, there was no time to see who dropped it. By the time you look up, only the bottom of the bridge is visible, where you see nothing more than a birds nest tucked in a corner nook. By the time you emerge on the far side, the bridge is vacant, until another garrison man on a camel canters over it.)
Snow stops examining the bag, transfixed by Varielky's story, appalled that such a thing could happen and yet strangely not surprised. These Amazighs were nefarious indeed, and the person so passionately telling this story, was twice blessed by the gods. It seems there is more than meets the eye to both of these travellers.
"That is a shocking tale, and believe me, I have heard a lot of tales", he says to Varielky. "Abadolla does not ring any bells with me, but it is not a name I will forget"
"Oh, yes, of course", he says handing the bag to Auger without a fuss as he approaches. "It seems we have a common adversary, although my troubles seem trifling in comparison".
"I was warned to be cautious of the name Amazigh on my travels in the Vale, but also Jlasi. I understand now about the Amazighs, I guess their reach extends to the Vale, but have either of you heard of Jlasi?", he asks, getting the feeling these two might be more knowledgeable about the area than he.
"Jlasi? I don't have that much history with them, but we did cross swords with a few of their guards once. Strong, respectable warriors who used some sort of magic to aid them." Varielky recalls. "If all of that house's warriors are like those we met, I'd rather fight a hundred of them over a single agent of the Amazighs."
Varielky then turns to Auger, addressing the bag in his hands, its contents she can guess. "I think we should wait with that. Just in case our... ah, friend, will find his way on board, you know? We can deal with it later, if we don't find him by the time we exit Kalahata."
You pass into Abziri amboule, and Auger spots the viscount’s mansion, and there, framed by a pair of thin cypresses: the street-level doorway down to the amboule archives.
Now, you all hear six bells tolling from the amboule seats and public fountains, and as the sun nears the western horizon, it begins to throw orange and pink light upon the gray clouds which have stirred slowly over the city throughout the day.
When you reach the final inner wall, surrounding the palace grounds of El Harrouch and Thacia amboules, your progress halts. The portcullis is closed, allowing water to flow through but blocking your passage. Ten minutes later, after considering options and yelling for attention, you see, at the far end of the canal tunnel under the wall, two torchbearers, slowly approaching.
They arrive at the portcullis, where the ox driver passes coins to one of them, a tall muscular woman, and on her signal, the portcullis slowly grinds open. The clanking noise reverberates down the dark passage. She looks right and left and exchanges a wave with crossbowmen in kill holes some 60’ away in both directions, 20’ above ground. She looks you over carefully, while the other guard, a young, attractive woman holding a crossbow, stands back. The tall one scans the Animu Borongo carefully, and then says, flatly, to Snow, “I need to check the cabin.”
Snow breathes a sigh of relief as the two torch bearers finally appear and make their way towards them. He was starting to think that the curfew had started and the gate was impassable.
He follows the gaze of the tall woman as she signals to the crossbowmen in the murder holes. It made sense this area was heavily guarded, after all it housed the Poppy Citadel, but still he felt a little nervous. Fortune had not exactly favoured him recently after all.
He bows his head slightly at her request to check the cabin. “Of course, come aboard, allow me to show you. We are only passing through, heading to the north gate”, he says as he takes a step toward the cabin.
The tall guard, wearing the dagger-moon on pale blue imperial livery, steps down onto the boat's rear deck, where Snow had been sitting. She's used to watercraft apparently, and the vessel hardly moves as a result of her boarding. With measured motions, she steps forward to stand beside Snow. "Open it," she says, holding her torch above her in her left hand, and warily scanning all three of you in a slow arc.
(OOC: Auger and Varielky, please roll Deception vs. DC10 as the guard looks for signs of anxiety. If you say anything untruthful to her or trying to cover up, please roll Deception DC10 again. For clarity's sake: It is still afternoon, and there is ambient ("bright") light even in the shade. The guard needed the torch in the dark tunnel, and presumably, will use it to assist her search of the small, presumably dark cabin. The deck is the size of a walk-in closet, perhaps 5x7', so were combat actions to be attempted, all of you would be crowded and roll with disadvantage.)
Auger turns to Varielky and in reference to the bag and its contents says, "Agreed."Unsure where exactly to put it, Auger take the small bag and places it inside his pack, for safekeeping and then sits again on the deck. At the mention of the Jlassi, Auger is uncomfortable as the person they were working with was his own fallen cousin. Fallen in multiple senses of the word.
As the boat comes to a halt by the final gate Auger has a poor feeling about things and closes his eyes.
Py, tell Granophyre to be very quiet I think we will need to be very careful right now.
Then Auger passes his senses into Py and casts invisibility on Strewn, with Py's touch on Strewn's shoulder enough to activate the spell.
(OOC: I think Auger would have been paranoid enough to do this in the timeframe between the two most recent DM posts. Invisibility has somatic and verbal components and Auger has no subtle spellcasting ability (yet) so I am hoping Auger could find a window where him seated on the deck would not cause undue attention.)
Deception, because Auger is an anxious sort of guy: 21.
(OOC: Ok, Py conveys that message. Also, we’ll say that Auger cast invisibility before the guard came on board. Zzozz had already mentioned casting the spell , potentially, at some point. Only Snow and Varielky had a chance to detect him. Snow’s passive insight and perception both exceed Augers spellcasting deception roll. So Snow notices Auger casting a spell. Snow, if you roll Arcana DC15 and succeed, you know the spell’s goal: concealment. If you rolled Arcana DC 20, you know the exact spell. Auger’s second deception roll will be relevant to the guard’s peering at Auger: a 21 means Auger has quite the poker face at that moment. Variely does not know what spell Auger cast, even if she notices him casting something.)

Snow was confident all was well, but had a slight niggling feeling after spotting the passenger casting some sort of spell just before the guard boarded. It was fine though, that could have been anything.
“No problem”, he says as he stands by the cabin door in front of the guard. “You’ll find all is in order”, he adds and opens the door. He takes a quick glance in himself and motions for the guard to look as well, as he moves slightly out of the way to give her room. He stays outside the door himself.
Perception: 15
Reaction (If Snow spots any sign of something amiss in the cabin, which I guess he doesn't!):
He will use cutting words to distract the guard from her Perception / Investigation check, not with anything offensive, just rambling chatter:
“Just be careful with that there torch of yours, I have some camping gear in there and if that lights up the whole boat might go ablaze. I mean, I know there is plenty of water around and all, but these boats have some sort of waterproofing that can be quite flammable if not handled right. And where would that leave us on our travels, I really dread to think”.
Snow was confident all was well, but had a slight niggling feeling after spotting the passenger casting some sort of spell just before the guard boarded.
(With such a close arcana roll, Snow will come back to this Question, subconsciously, in an hour or so and realize it was a concealment spell.)
The guard sticks her head into the cabin, her tall form blocking the view to anyone else. She steps down two steps, spotting (with a 20) a deep depression on one of the bunks and extends her hand to touch it. This triggers several occurrences.
‘She’s going to touch him!,’ Py sends to Auger.
Auger’s invisibility spell ends.
The guard (and Py, ONLY) hears the whispered words in a basso voice, “Ignore me. There’s nothing to see here.”
Snow hears the whispering but must assume the guard is mumbling to herself.
The guard turns and climbs up the steps and closes the door behind her.
She looks to the other guard, the attractive one with a crossbow, and says, “There’s nothing to see here,” and debarks, signaling the ox driver to keep moving.
Past the portcullis and down a ghostly waterway you float, the torchbearer leading the way as the gate splashes down behind you. The breathing of the ox and the sound of the water seems to be disturbingly amplified. At the tunnel’s end, you must wait for the torchbearer to open the portcullis and shut it after you once more. Then, you are in Thacia Amboule, and the Poppy Citadel thrusts skyward to your right, blindingly reflecting the last rays of sunset, so tall that it punches through the high mist which is now rolling down from the vale.
On the palace’s terraces, you see the wealthiest of the Kalahati-ur, royalty, and the imperial elite, whose voices tinkle down in arabesques of laughter, and you hear the clinking of glasses and sweet music. Gone is the anxiety and rush you’ve noted everywhere else: the nobility take their time, seemingly as if all is right in the world and always will be.
Nearer, on the grounds of Thacia amboule, garrison fighters lead chained men and women, one or two at a time, into the donjon, and runners dart back and forth with messages to hurrying troop commanders.
Snow looks up towards the sounds of the nobility on the terraces, enjoying the moment as the sweet music reaches his ears. He closes his eyes and focusses on the sound, but can’t block out that of chains rattling as the unfortunate are dragged into the keep. He looks across at those individuals and wonders what fate awaits them, knowing it wasn’t going to be good.
“I will be glad when we are out of the city”, he says quietly to no-one in particular. “Hopefully it will be easier getting out of this area than getting in”.
His vision follows the line of the canal trying to spot what lies ahead, another portcullis for sure. He hopes the torchbearer will see them through quickly.
Well, that was unexpected, Auger sends to Py. I thought we were doomed for sure.
Looking up at the Poppy Citadel, so close for the first time, and watching the nobles at their leisure, Auger cannot help but think of the amount of poverty in this city versus the wealth on display here. Disgusting. Auger looks away and keeps his eyes on the water and on whether the Amazighs still follow. Looking ahead for a moment Auger sighs where he sits and then closes his eyes and sends to Py.
Please tell Granophyre to expect another inspection before we can leave the city. Will he be able to handle it again himself or will I need to intervene?
