I can make either work and would like to play this character regardless of where it ends up. If it comes down to preference I would prefer to be here on the forums rather than on discord.

I would prefer this format than Discord. I would like a chance to play this character, as she is something new and different for me, but I have never been in a discord game that lasted. I am on Beyond constantly, and only check Discord once a day if I remember to do so.
Sounds like a lot of you prefer these forums (which makes sense since I advertised on here). My play by post experience has all been on discord. For those of you who prefer these forums, is there a separate mobile app or notification system? I've got the DnDbeyond mobile app, but I don't see a way to access these forums on there anywhere. Much of my day, I'm going to be away from a computer, but I can access discord with one click on a phone and immediately see where there are new posts and respond. If I have to pull up a browser on my phone, go to this site, search for the thread, etc. I'm going to be able to post much less. If there is a better way to track a forum that I'm missing, please let me know.
At the top of the window is a Notifications link. That link shows how many threads, you have posted in, have new messages. If you click on it, then you come to a page that contains all of the latest notifications. It is just above the Private Message link, which shows how many of your Private Messages have been posted in and are now unread. The Notifications link is between the Private Messages link and the Change Log link at the very top of every page on Beyond.
I could make it work either way but I've found that Forums helps to get posts on a more consistent pace. Discord could be either too fast or too slow
About notifications you can set a particular thread to notify you via email every time there's a new post.
On my phone I have several tabs open. One for notifications, one for PMs and one for each game I am into. I only have to refresh it when I open it and read new posts. Hope this helps.
I know about the notifications icon on the page and I get email notifications, but it takes a while. For instance, I haven't received an email notification yet for either DragonDenn's or Frandals's posts and one of those was almost an hour ago. Meanwhile, while I was typing this someone posted a Happy New Years in one of the discord games I'm in and I instantly got a notification that there was a new post. I'm used to a more immediate system. I may not be able to respond to a discord post until later, but at least I know one is there that I should check when I get a chance. I've got to use my phone all day for all sorts of things, so I don't keep a lot of additional browser tabs open and if I have to go to a page and refresh it off and on all day just to see if anyone has posted, it's not going to happen.
Sorry folks, but I gotta think about this. There is an awful lot to track with this campaign (food, water, pursuits, random encounters, travel, etc.) and if I have to keep going back over several days or a week of posts to check when something happened it's going to get even harder to keep up with. Or things are really going to crawl at a very slow pace.
This is entirely my mistake for not listing the platform originally, so I apologize.
For my part I have no problem doing it on Discord.. even if I prefer the forums for the IC part.
I, myself, run three games on a mix, discord for ooc discussion ,planning, tracking things, even rolls and combat, and use the Forums for IC descriptions and interactions. So far is a mix between the two methods that works fine once you get the hang for it.
I also can make discord work if that simply works best for the DM. I too use a combo of discord for ooc in my own games, while I keep ic in a Beyond forum.
If discord is the only way to play the game you want to play that is fine. However I will say I have seen resource heavy games play very effectively through a combination of forum and Google docs/Google sheets resources.
I tend to use the Google office resources for my games too.

This seems really handy. I am down to try a full discord campaign again too if that is what you want
Experience with 5th Edition - plenty. I've DMed several groups over the years and played on the forums here as well (as my post count indicates).
Character concept: Sed is a yuan-ti (not-so-)pureblood druid who failed her initiation to adulthood (at age 9) by sparing the poor dwarf she was sent to strangle. Found unfit to be part of the tribe she was sold to slavery. It's been many years since then and she has served many owners, finding ways to stay alive and hope for a better future. She is absolutely devastated by having been separated from her focus item - a wooden staff that used to be a handle of a plunger.
I'm trying to see if I can find a practical way to be efficient doing this through the forums. I've been playing with some settings and found that I had notifications set for sending a daily digest instead of when posts are made. So that helps. I've got the tab saved on my phone's home screen.
Another question for those of you that use the forums a lot: When I'm on my laptop and I'm posting here, I get an array of options for making dice rolls, posting images, linking to websites, formatting text, etc. When I'm trying to reply to the forum on my phone (pixel running android using google chrome), I just get a blank box and don't have the ability to do anything other than type text for a reply. Am I missing something or is that all you can do on the forums when you're accessing them through a browser on a phone? For those of you who DM games on here, how do you share images of maps, NPCs, monsters, etc.? Are you only able to do that when you're on a computer?
And one last question: is there any way to pin messages so it's easy to find and access important posts that you have to refer back to frequently? For example, on discord, when initiative is rolled and combat starts, I generally make a post listing everyone in initiative order and pin that post while the combat is going on so everyone can easily see the order without having to scroll back through dozens of posts.
Native time zone as well as times you will be most likely to post (afternoons, evenings, etc.). EST, early am, afternoon, evening.
How soon you could start play. Right away
Your experience with 5 edition D&D - PBP x 2 yr, DnD since Red box in the 80s
Your character concept (you don’t have to have it fully built yet) with a short backstory (maybe about what you might have been doing when you were captured by slavers)
Any questions you have! Up for either discord or forum
Character : Petmailer Naïlo
Race : Drow
Class : Fighter (arcane archer)
Background : Urchin
Backstory :
"What are you looking at? Why should I tell you, you that haven't walked in my shoes.." A silvery haired elf that appears sinewy and strong looks at you as you ask questions, about his life, his background, the events that brought him to this spot.
Petmaier Nailo grew up in Tethyr, specifically in Zazesspur, dirt poor and starving most of the early portion of his life. He learned the way of the streets, learned to scavenge and survive on his own. He learned how to fight, to escape, and how to follow your mark. He gained skill in use of a bow and fancies magic as well. He is not proud of some of the things he had to do to survive.
In his younger days he found his way into Helviraena's outskirts, and after a thorough questioning and many promises, allowed to stay. His abilities grew further and he finally gained enough trust and skill to join the Shadow Sentinels, guarding the perimeter of their lands. He feels reassured that he has been welcomed to their society and recognized for his skills. He has visions at night of the horrors that he faced long ago, reliving struggles of his youth. He wishes to put those to rest, and he is trying to figure out how to do that. Lately his dreams have been dominated by Dragons, and their evil, power hungry eyes. He learns of the Zhentarim and their recent connections to his city. He has had contact recently with a Harper named Rostan in Silverymoon whom he knew from years ago, and he is shaken about what he has been asked to do. He received a message by raven and was told to gather information about this association with the Zhentarim if possible. He was promised a position with the Harpers if he wishes, gold as well. He is sorting out what to do and who he can trust, he just wants the dreams with the Dragon eyes to stop.
As he was planning his escape from the underdark, his treachery was discovered and he was thrown in jail by the Drow, felt to be a traitor to his kind. Now his only thought is….escape.
For the formatting question I remember that you could switch it to "browser" mode and then it shows you all the options to editing available on the computer. I suggest you to change the font size though, for it, at least to me, used to put it too small.
About the "pin" message I am not sure but now the Encounters tool logs itself into the gamelog of a campaign so I guess that would be useful.
For your Discord games... don't you use Avrae? she pins the initiative list for you on the channel you are currently rolling the dice.
For the mobile browser, if you turn your phone to landscape it will show the toolbar for the dice roller and such. As far as images and such, you can use the toolbar to create a link, and link to the image you wish. There are other options for inserting images, but I don't use them. I do use the tooltip option for creature images though.
There is a reference document for how to use the tooltips, which I can find if you need it. As far as pinning a document, it should work to create it as a favorite on your browser, or just leave a tab open to the page you wish to keep access to. You could also use the create a link option and add a link to that specific message, including it in your posts so people can go back to it. Another option is to create that link in your signiture and thus it will be available in every message you post. Yet another option is to put the text of the initiative order, if that is what you wish to keep available, and put that text into your signiture.
If I have a document that needs to be regularly accessed for the game (say like a party inventory spreadsheet) I put the link to that document in the campaign tab.

I do use Avrae on discord and tupperbot so that NPCs can speak in their own "voice". If people on here weren't regular discord users, I wasn't sure if they would be familiar with them. For pinning messages, that's more to help the players have quick access to important posts they need than for me personally. Switching to landscape does open up the other options, but that also means my keyboard covers almost the entire screen. I'll keep playing with it.
