"Oh don't you know flattery will get you every where." She gives him a smile then continues, "I'll bring you up some food." Then she leans a little closer and lowers her voice. "Alben will be up to visit you shortly. He's quiet intrigued with your progress." Before Rook could say anything else Bree walks away to get Rook's food along with other things.
Rook retires to his room. While it's not the most beautiful of rooms, it is extremely functional. A nice double bed adorns one wall, an oaken writing desk on another with a small closet. On the nightstand next to the bed laid a note:
Baths are at the end of the hall. Baths and bath maids are included in the nights rent.
Ten or so minutes pass as Rook is looking over the box and the daggers within. When he hears a knock at the door. "It is Alben. I wish to enter and bring your meal." A nice and curt voice appears on the other side of the door. It seems to have some kind of sing song quality to it.
So you can detect that these blades hold some kind of elemental powers, specifically: Fire, Water, Air and Earth.
The box is of gold, and looks to be valuable for some kind of trinket or at worst melted down for the precious materials within, but no magic emanates from it.
'Fillion' puts the box beneath a pillow and moves towards the door, still wearing his traveling cloak. The elf takes out a dagger and hides it in his left hand, hidden under the copious material of his attire, his sword still in it's sheath on his belt. The white haired, blue eyed elf opens the door to inspect Albien, simply saying "greetings, Alben!" "Please, do come in." He opens the door further and allows the man to step in, barring any immediate threats or concerns.

Standing at the door stood a half elf man. With brown hair and golden eyes. he was adorned in common trousers and a linen shirt. He gave a smile to the elf, as he walked inside holding a tray of food. The tray contained roasted potato and carrots along with a chicken leg, and the glass of whiskey and another of water just as Rook ordered.
Alben entered the room and set the tray down on the writing table, once he entered he motioned for Rook to shut the door. "I wish to discuss business with you Gerruk Vartan, or would you prefer Rook? Or Fillion? If you do not mind. See they call me a broker, I work for the Veil. Don't worry you can put that blade away I mean you no harm, on the contrary I mean to make you lots and lots of money. Now before we go further, especially with your payment, can you please produce the blades of the contract for me?" The man stands in the middle and patiently waits.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rook gives a smirk and gives up his exhaustive minor illusion efforts, his hair changing to a short dark brown and his eyes hazel. "Rook it is then" he states plainly, effortlessly twirling his dagger twice as it slips back into its sheath. The intrigued Eladrin moves over the bed and retrieves the box, returning to where he stood and holding the box out for Alben. He quickly pulls it back, however, asking "and what was the contract again, friend?" "I did this in good faith off of a note on some parchment, but you will not have this box for nothing but promises, of course." Rook tries to maintain a smile and a jovial attitude, wishing no offense to Alben but rather engaging in respectful banter with another in the same business. He assumes the man would expect no less.
Rook also keeps his ever active detect magic up, always curious as to who he might meet or pass by that might have a valuable item on them.
"That piece of paper was a job interview more or less, and one that actually pays. Not common in this day and age." The half elf laughs, smiling back at Rook. "150 gold a blade, with a 100 gold bonus since no one was injured during the whole ordeal. Not to bad I would say so myself. Now down to brass tax, I wish to offer you an invitation into my organization. Smuggling, thievery, assassinations all of it, ripe for the pickings with a man of your skill. Can you imagine the gold you can make my friend, the renown?" He pauses, then gives a non chalant shrug, after he sets a leather sack of gold on the table. "Or lack there of if you wish. It doesn't matter in the end, its the present that matters." Pulling over the chair from the writing desk, "If you don't mind?" Alben says as he sits down with out waiting for the response. "I primarily work in the thievery and information business, at times a bit of smuggling, but I'm wanting to expand to grow my enterprise even more. I've heard tales of this 'Rook' who can sneak into a house with out a problem and steal or kill, leaving only his calling card behind. I thought to myself, I must employ this man, if his talents are as great as they sound." Waiting a moment to let his words sink in.
"That vault in the old bastards basement, I know you want it. Hell all of the Bellor Empire wants it. Join with me and it will be yours, among even bigger prizes. What do you say lad?"
So you've heard of the Veil, but it's always in whispers like most criminal enterprises. The Veil basically handles all things illegal, thievery, assassinations, smuggling, information. They have their hands in it all. When i say all i mean all, if someone tries to set up their own enterprise and work outside of the Veil they somehow disappear. You would also know it's not always the easiest to get hooked up with an actual broker.
Rook simply nods to indicate he accepts the price of this potential new business partner, picking up the sack of gold and tossing it over into his bed and handing Alben the box of daggers in return. Rook folds his arms and leans his back against the bedpost. "You're looking to expand, you say? Are you simply looking to add more 'talent' or do you have new ventures in mind? Know that I am most interested in the renown, to be blunt. I aim to make a name for myself but I see no reason that cannot be as a member of the Veil. I expect that you will not impede my progress there. Are there any rules or regulations I would be expected to follow if I accept your most generous offer?"
As the conversation continues, Rook continues asking questions. "Why are you so concerned over whether or not anyone is injured when you might next send me to assassinate someone? I will likely use any means necessary to accomplish the task you set before me." With regard to the vault, he asks "do you have anyone else working on the vault?" "Is there competion for it in our circles? Why do so many know of the vault and what more do we know of it and what is inside? Have any tried to get in? Do you have any means to aid me in surveilling it?"
"Aye, looking to not only add new talent but to also bring on new ventures. I'm wanting to expand my thievery enterprises, bring on more assassinations and bounty hunts, maybe do a bit more of smuggling. I want to grow this enterprise to marvel any yet known to man, you're not the only one looking fro a bit of renown around here Rook. We have a few rules aye, but nothing to difficult or impeding." Alben gives a pause as he looks over the blades. "The first rule, I am not to interfere with another's mission. It's simple really, don't fumble things for anyone else and they won't do it for you. If you're responsible for a member being jailed or sentenced to death, you owe them to try and bust them out. While in our enterprises long reign, this has only happened a few times, but every time Veil members have risen to the cause. This also goes along with our third rule, never get caught, and if you do keep your mouth shut until you are free or dead." Alben walks across the room and pulls a small flask from his pocket taking a drink. "Our last rules are always pay your debts, and never be late in paying them. It's basically common courtesy you see, and then the final, 10% of the cut goes to the broker and 5% the Veil on all jobs. So in the end, you get 85% of the cut on all jobs, these cuts grant you... well more jobs, and you can call on the Veil when you're in need, it's a win win for all, you get a large sum of gold we provide you more work." Alben smiles to Rook as he explains the rules of the Veil.
"To be honest, I only didn't want you to kill old Greybeard because of that vault. See as of right now the only thing people know of it is that the vault it's self is made of Dimeritium, a metal impervious to magic, and hard as hell. People have tried with explosives and the likes and nothing has yet been able to get in. He also has master crafted locks, shielded by Adamantine bars, or so are the rumors." Rook can notice a gleam in his eye, thinking of the big score. "See life is just borrowed time my friend, and if someones time is up, then it doesn't bother me much. The only time I do care about another's life is when there is coin to be made. You showed skill by getting in to that building and not being wasteful, so I provide you with a little bit extra from my pocket." He pauses as he looks Rook in the eye, "But don't think that extra will be paid every time my friend. It was a rare occurrence. As to why we know about it, well the daft bastard brags about the unbreakable vault. As to what's inside, no clue one can only imagine. See Dimeritium also blocks magic aura's, so we can't even gleam what's inside. Also no, no one is aiming for the vault as no one has ever been able to get in it. All contracts on it have failed, so we've stopped issuing them, it is however a personal endeavor." He gives a smile. "So what do you say Rook?"
Veil Code of Conduct
You are not to interfere with another's mission
If you're responsible for a member being jailed or sentenced to death, you owe them to try and bust them out
Never get caught, and if you do keep your mouth shut until you are free or dead
Always pay your debts, and never be late in paying them
10% of the cut goes to the broker and 5% the Veil on all jobs
Rook continues to lean casually with his arms crossed, but gives Alben a slow nod and a grin of interest and approval. "I have no problem with the rules of the Veil. Let me ask you though, is there room for me to grow my own renown and for you to still get what you want? I assume the answer is yes, as the great thief "Rook of the Veil" would seem to suite both of our needs there, but I'd like to hear it from you. Similarly, you say you care little for life, even that of an ally. What will you say when an angry victim of our work contacts you offering a heavy price for the head of the Crimson Shadow? I'd hate to be looking over my shoulder with you already, my friend." Rook keeps his smile but squints his eyes a bit, curious as to how Alben will handle his questions regarding conflicts of interest.
Assuming he does not receive a response from Alben that warrants alarm, the skilled Eladrin continues. "I do thank you for the opportunity, Alben, and I am most interested. I have several more questions for you. One, I assume this does not restrict me from taking other jobs. I have little interesting in joining another organization mind you, but if a nobleman flaunts his wealth in the streets it is, of course, my duty to relieve him of it swiftly if the mood strikes. I shall not be asking you for permission. Call it in the name of the Veil after the fact, it matters little to me. I do suppose that lends to the risk that another in our midst was working on said noble, but if you tell me that is the case after the fact I'm sure we can resolve the conflict amicably."
"Second, what can you do to aid me in monitoring the vault? I'd like to keep an eye on it day and night, but do not currently have the means. I may seek out new magics for this, or simply a magical artifact that will do the trick. I am most interested in the latter, mind you, as enhanced tools of the trade will help get me where I want to go."
"Third, what more can you tell me about Greybeard? What can I use against him? At the risk of revealing too much, I'd be tempted to flat out give him something of value he'd want to keep in the vault just to watch him open it, after my surveillance is set up that is, of course."
"Lastly, what is my next job, dear business partner and broker?" At this Rook stands upright and puts his hand out to shake Alben's.
"Oh, by the way, where's the best place to buy some supplies around here? Actually, also, should I plan to stay in Inham somewhat permanently? If so where do you advise I take up residence and also conduct my business from? Those two locations may need to be separate, but I defer to your experience here."
"If you wish to relieve a nobleman of his coin purse, do so. If a problem truly arises from that, which I have not heard of in the past, then you are correct we can patch that up amicably. There are no jobs outside of the Veil in this line of work, see if someone tries to operate outside of our network they cease to exist." The half elf says dusting off his hands. "Now see your life i care very much for, so you will have no worry about taking a contract on you. See a continuous sum of gold, is worth far more than any lump sum. Also that would just be bad business, and I refuse to conduct bad business. With our network we have tools and abilities open to us that many others do not. I will inquire about what you seek for monitoring purposes. Now I will inform you, many have tried asking Greybeard to store an item and he has always refused, he's a right git if you ask me, one reason why I wouldn't mind seeing his business out of commission and ran by another, but that maybe a job for another time. Old Greybeard has no family, and enjoys the company of whores and coin more than anyone else, he has no bonds to person or thing."
Leaning down in the chair now, hands on his knees Alben begins to grin. "So it's interesting that you bring up not only a place to stay in Inham as well as the next job, because I have an idea to conquer both. Have you ever been interested in the wine business my friend?"
Rook simply gives a devilish grin and says "not until today, my friend." He raises an eyebrow to indicate to Alben that he's curious to hear more.
I assume that Alben would shake on their new partnership and also at some point before they depart give him a few tips about the city such as where to buy clothing, magical supplies, mundane and thieving supplies, etc. etc. etc. I just want to do some shopping the following day before the next quest.
"See the Feyweir Vinyard, well they refuse to do any work with me you see. They refuse to sell wines to me, or work with myself and the Veil on an agreement for some smuggling operations. It would be a shame if they were to fall on hard times, and a certain person to purchase that estate. This is what I propose, we sabotage the vineyard in a few different ways, forcing them to fall hard, and then you come in and purchase the vineyard. What ever money you don't have for the purchase, I help you on the terms that until the debt is repaid we split all smuggling venture 50/50 until the end of the debt. A 1 to 1 loan to say, no interest." Alben smiles at the idea, while his appearance seems to be nice Alben is a ruthless business man and at the end of the day coin is what speaks to him most. Coin and connections. "I wish you to think on this my friend. So for the current I'll provide you a room here, for 5 silver." he says as he gets up from his seat, and reaches into his pocket. Pulling out a ring. "This ring will not only mark you as one of the Veil, but you can also use it to communicate with me or Bree your other point of contact. See while my barmaids are beautiful women, they all help me with other tasks and business. Bree is my right hand and most trusted of them, which is why she only works with two of my best. You and Nox, whom I assume you'll meet some day. I assume you are in need of other items and what not, for mundane things such as clothes I suggest the Silver Castle, for weapons and armor I would go to Sword in the Stone. Magic items may be a little trickier, provide a list of what you need to Bree and she will be able to either get you the things you need or point you to the correct shop." He says as he shakes Rook's hand and leaves the room.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Rooks nods approvingly at Alben's scheme and has some thoughts, but refrains from mentioning them. "Yes, I will think on how to achieve our goals with this and will contact you tomorrow evening." The elf then sets about his preparations before heading to bed. He puts a chair in front of the door and ensures the windows are closed as much as possible. He does what he can to alarm the place, such as putting fragile items near the window such that they'd be knocked over if someone tried to enter. Rook sits and counts his coin while enjoying his late night snack and libations. He eventually slips a dagger alongside his mattress and takes his rest for the night.
In the morning Rook hexes a spider and then makes his way downstairs for breakfast in shabby commoner's clothes covering his more valuable items and dark red leather armor. His hair is dirty blonde and his eyes green, the elf muttering 'mular iddfwual' under his breath behind a droopy sleeve several times a minute after feigning a sniffle and rubbing the felt in his pocket. "I really must remedy this soon" he thinks to himself regard the rather pathetic way he's keeping up his disguises. Rook keeps an eye out for Bree but knows she can't be working round the clock.. At some point today he will look to deliver her a shopping list as Alben instructed.
small brazier
a small bag of sulfur powder
a bag of small pieces of coal
a live or recently deceased bat
info on availability and price of a bag of holding (replacement for items lost on backstory mission)
info on availability and price of a hat of disguise (replacement for items lost on backstory mission)
potion(s) of healing
availability of other potions (haste, invisibility, gaseous form, etc. etc.)
After a leisurely breakfast, Rook sets out into town in his commoner's disguise. He tries to get to know the town a bit better, always watching for marks or locations or individuals that may prove useful to him. He takes a walk past the Phoenix Forge, but only if the streets are populated as normally expected, taking a peak to see any activity there including increased security, and takes a peak at the burned out building nearby as well. All the while Rook thinks of the vault at the Phoenix Forge and also Alben's suggested task of acquiring the Vineyard. Eventually he makes his way to the Silver Castle for some shopping. "Time to play the fool" he thinks to himself.
Perception on Phoenix Forge: 20
As we get through this shopping portion do you want me to just use the PHB or other solid resource and tally the gold cost for the things I want and adjust my inventory accordingly?
In the common area of the tavern you do not see Bree, but you can leave her a note if you wish or contact her with your ring.
At the Phoenix Forge you notice that there are two guards just like you noticed the other night, there are also three people who at first glance Rook thought to be beggars, but on with a second look you see blades hidden with them and repeated quick glances at the building's entrances. These seem to be other people that old Greybeard hired for added but discreet security.
The Veil ring works similar to a sending stone mixed with a whisper spell. You must choose whom you wish to contact, either Bree or Alben and then you can speak and respond with each other through a kind of telepathic bond.
Yes use the PHB for costs or this site, and if it's not listed let me know and i'll tell you. i'm working on my list of actual prices and inventory that I can give you at some point and time.
Here are a couple things on your list that i know are not in the PHB:
At some point in the morning when he can easily find some privacy, Rook rubs his new ring a bit and thinks of the red haired beauty Bree. "Bree, it seems we will be doing a lot of business together. Alben told me to pass a few specific needs along to you. May we discuss later?"
In the meantime, Rook is not surprised to see increased security at the Phoenix Forge. He takes note of this for the future venture he plans there to peruse the weapons further and install some method of long term surveillance such that he can eventually watch someone enter the vault and hopefully learn more about it from that.
Rook makes his way to the Silver Castle dressed as a young, shabby, blonde elf. "Hello, hello! I'm in need of some adventuring gear! I hear it can be great money, you see, and I think I'm just brave enough to pull it off! So, um, what would an adventurer need, anyway?" He continues to pester the purveyor of mundane goods at the Silver Castle, doing his best to come across as a total fool of an elf who is sure to get himself killed very, very soon. "How about paint, for marking my way through spooky caves, eh? Maybe a file in case I get locked away in a dungeon, too! My uncle just died, you see, and he left me this coin here. He always wanted to be an adventurer but never got out there and did it. Well I am going to do it! Hmmm, I think some proper clothes are in order too, don't you? Yeah, I have to look the part! People will cheer when I come back to Inham and I can't be dressed like this! There will be plenty more coin soon after I perform some heroic deeds, ah, I guess... um, someone will pay me for it, right? Yeah, that must be how it works. Give me the best tunic and trousers you've got with the rest of this coin here then! No expense will be spared, hehe!"
An hour later Rook walks out of the Silver Castle with a pile of new equipment. He he has a large sack slung over his shoulder full of two lengths of silken rope, a grappling hook, three additional flasks of oil, two more bells, four candles, and some carpenter's tools (specifically some files and sandpaper for making his calling cards), red paint and other such supplies, and a fine cloak, tunic, trousers, scarf and boots. At least he can appropriately dress as Fillion again now.
"Of course Rook. We can speak of this more at the tavern. I look forward to discussing with you later this evening." You hear Bree's honey voice sound like its coming from every direction but also from none within your mind.
The Silver Castle is a simple general goods store, packed within a simple building along a common road. While simplicity is it's key, with items packed on wood shelves ranging from cook pots to clothes, it provides excellent customer service and has the best prices in town. Rook is greeted by a simple man who helps him walk about the store and collect his needs. The entire time agree with Rook how he would make a mighty fine adventurer, but Rook could tell the man thought he was going to be like so many others and die the second they made it out of the city or even sooner within the city.
Stepping on the stone road Rook looks up and sees the sun is not yet to it's zenith, it's somewhere around 10:30 or 11 in the morning.
Rook ponders what to do with his afternoon. He suddenly doesn't have to look for his next mark as Alben does much of the work for him. He could seek out a library or book store that may have information on more advanced spells or items that might help him watch the vault. He could try spying on Greybeard to see if he could learn anything of value, but guessed the man would reveal little. He could also visit the Feyweir Vineyard to get a sense of the place and scout out where he may be living and running a business. He wasn't too excited about that last part, but would see what Alben had to say about that.
For now Rook decides to get lunch at the nicest inn in the city, hopefully something other than the Forged Cask. He decided he liked Alben and thought he was a pretty straight shooter, as thieves go. This could work. He also wondered if this would limit his ability to carve out a name for himself, and decided to simply keep a finger on the pulse of that issue and otherwise go with it for now.
Does Alben own/run the Forged Cask?
What would Rook know about places to go research magical means of watching the vault?
Would he know of a rich, fancy inn in town? He's thinking he could ask about the Vineyard there, how long it takes to go visit the vineyard, if the inn serves their wine, who owns it, etc.?
Happy to make some rolls, just not sure what just yet. Thanks!

PS I realized if I pick up Mask of Many Faces I'd be covered on magical disguises without a hat of disguise. Unfortunately it will probably take until Warlock 6 to get it. ;(
Rook decides to find out more about the vineyard, but first he needs to improve his appearance. The Eladrin looks for a suitable place to change his clothes, heading back to the Forged Cask to do so if he must in order to find the required privacy. "Ugh, another persona seems appropriate, I suppose" he thinks to himself in an exhausted manner. The aspiring thief of renown really just wants to work and revel in the spoils, but unfortunately all of this extra effort to conceal his identity and manipulate others is a necessity. Tired of using less than ideal magic to hide his true visage and knowing anyone who truly paid attention would see past the tiny, imperfect illusions, Rook makes an usual choice for him. "I shall simply appear as myself" he decides, although he still plans to remedy this headache in a more suitable way sooner than later, likely asking 'Him' for help in this area. After all, He had been generous to Rook, and had offered much more power if Rook kept up his less than noble pursuits, leaving a bit of carnage along the way for Him to revel in. Rook just had to be careful about what to ask for, as he could not ask for too much and thus each request must be thought about carefully.
Rook dons his new tunic, scarf, pants and boots and heads back out into town, his true brown hair and hazel eyes on display in Inham for the first time. He tries to remember which parts of town looked nicest thus far and heads that way. The Eladrin seeks out shops of fine clothing and wares, asking those in the streets for directions to the finest inn and the finest shops where he can. Assuming he finds at least somewhat of an upscale shop, he enters and makes his inquiries within...
Pausing here to see if you have an upscale merchant or someone he could then ask about an upscale inn.

64 gold, 5 silver spent, I believe...

Unfortunately it will probably take until Warlock 6 to get it. ;(
You can assume Alben owns and runs the Forged Cask, but aren't really sure otherwise. It could go either way to you right now.
In this city you really haven't seen anything that would suggest there is but you also haven't been to much of the city.
You have no idea, maybe someone else would.
