"Take care, Tookrashk!" the blonde warrior greets it before it goes "And remember! Now that we will help you with food, DON'T hunt humanoids anymore! You know humanoids? One head, two arms and two legs, about like me? Those no longer! If you really want an extra snack... I heard there are orcs around... THOSE humanoids you can hunt! You know what they look like? Stooped postures, low foreheads, and piggish faces with prominent lower canines that resemble tusks. And you know? They're pretty tasty too!" to make herself understood even better, she licks her lips.
With the manticore satiated and departed, Khessa retrieves the leftover meat: "Well... Fortunately, even a little less is enough to satiate our new friend. We might be able to keep it fed, so it does not attack the citizens. And also helps us against other enemies. If we can convince other 'inhabitants' of the surroundings who do not love the dragon too much to help us, getting rid of that overgrown reptile may be easier".
"Anyway," the tall warrior is then ready to journey back to Phanadalin "time to accompany our dear Adabra to the safety of the town! Shall we go? Or do you have something you wish to bring with you, Adabra?" the blonde puts an arm on the midwife's shoulders"We are many, we can carry some of your things for you, if needed. Just tell. Else... well, let's go; better not linger too long, because we really met the dragon, while coming here. It would be dangerous to be found by that beast now, that we are not yet ready to defeat it".
If we make it to Phandalin without problems, Khessa leads the party and Adabra to townmaster Harbin Wester, so that he can find accommodation for the midwife... and also pay the promised reward!
Adabra looks around at the party gratefully. "Thank you very much for your assistance," she says. "I have just the thing to give you as a reward!"
With that she disappears back into the windmill. About fifteen minutes later she returns with a potion vial full of a red liquid. "This is one of my healing potions!" she hands the potion to Khessa.
"Now that the manticore is gone, I feel I really should stay here at the windmill. All of my supplies are here," she explains. "If you give a message to Tom, he can arrange a regular delivery of meat to appease the manticore if it returns. I can also give you a letter that explains to Harbin that I am safe now so he should really stop being such a fussbudget!"
“It’s a couple hours to sunset.” Jasper points out to the others . “We should gather whatever Adabra needs and get back to town. For her sake.”
While the others are helping Adabra, Jasper looks around the hillside for plants, mushrooms, herbs or berries to work into potions or remedies. As well as on the way back to Phandalin.
NATURE CHECK:22
Jasper is able to find plenty of herbs and ingredients for his potion making. Indeed, he finds double the amount he normally would while foraging.
On the way, Echo chatters about the incredible feat they just pulled: "---You always hear about people slaying this beast and that monster, but how often do you hear about adventurers befriending one, huh? A simple nice meal can do so much!"
To Falver and Rel: "Thanks for looking out! I definitely overestimated my nimbleness there," she laughs a bit sheepishly, "those illusions were great, it was real weird talking to Adabra but also hearing the sound of her crying. But in a good oh-a-magic-trick way?"
(Sorry about not posting about Adabra's response before you guys left for the village, but she's a stubborn lady and now that the immediate danger is gone would rather stay in her windmill.)
It takes the party about 45 minutes or so to return to the village. Khessa leads the party back to the townmaster's house. The house appears the same as it did before. As the party approaches, the curtains in the window next to the door twitch again.
"Eh, who's there?" the townmaster calls through the door.
Rel inclines her head to the tall blonde human warrior in respect.
"Well done. I underestimated our... really your... ability to parley with the manticore. I still doubt it will help us fight against a stronger creature such as a dragon, but I've already been wrong once about it."
...
"It was the teamwork," Khessa smiles. "Tookrashk must have trusted me because it felt that I was confident and that I was not afraid... but if I felt that way," she puts his hand on Rel's shoulder and looks into her eyes with gratitude "it was also thanks to the spells you protected me with (and I did not even need to ask!) before I went to talk to it. I knew that in case of danger I would be protected and that I could count on you and everyone else".
The blonde warrior after a while adds, as if pondering for herself (although in fact she is still talking to the half-drow) "Do you know, Rel?" (and immediately corrects herself, remembering that the other usually calls herself and anyone else by first and last name - evidently she cares about that) "Oh, I mean: do you know, Rel Serafin? In fact it surprised me too that Tookrashk listened to me. Usually, when I try to talk seriously to people, to convince them of something or to explain my reasons, it is difficult for them to pay attention. Most of them just look me up and down, some with wide eyes (usually males), some with disapproving looks (usually females) and in the end it turns out that practically nobody cared of what I said. Maybe I am better suited to talk to monsters".
"Against the dragon, I trust Tookrashk to do his part" is convinced Khessa. "By continuing to treat it well, we could really let it experience what friendship is... and perhaps make him appreciate it. But even if it wasn't... Tookrashk fears the dragon, of course, but also hates it... so I think our friend will take the opportunity to eliminate it, if it can count on the help of someone who makes the feat possible. In the worst case, if Tookrashk will panic during the fight, maybe it'll run away... but it won't turn against us, because it wouldn't suit him. How could it trust the dragon, who chased him out of his territory and would eat it, given the opportunity? Anyway," she finally shrugs "time will tell".
On the way, Echo chatters about the incredible feat they just pulled: "---You always hear about people slaying this beast and that monster, but how often do you hear about adventurers befriending one, huh? A simple nice meal can do so much!"
...
"Oh, well... a simple but quite big meal!" Khessa jokes "Anyway, yes, I'm also excited about what we accomplished. If Tookrashk proves to be a true friend, he could be a great asset to everyone. Against the dragon it would be a precious help, with those teeth and those claws... And after we're gone, if it really became friends with people, it could become the guardian of the town, since Phandalin does not have a proper army. The town could feed Tookrashk regularly and heal it when needed (benefits that a manticore could hardly otherwise dream of obtaining!) and Tookrashk in return could defend Phandalin from the most common threats. Maybe not from a dragon... but from orcs or bandits without a doubt!"
..."Eh, who's there?" the townmaster calls through the door.
"Hey Harbin," the blonde warrior waves her hand in the direction of the window "I'm Khessa, we are the adventurers you just hired this morning. We saved the midwife from the danger that threatened her. Only, she absolutely didn't want to leave the windmill all the same... words did not move her and take her away by force did not seem very nice, so we had to leave her be. Here, she wrote to you to explain, there is mail for you!" and she shows the letter that Adabra has addressed to him.
"Indeed Jasper," replies Khessa to the elf "but let's wait for Harbin to pay us... I hope for the better, but maybe we'll have to convince him, since we did not fulfill the deal to the letter. We did the best thing we could, but if he is the strictly lawful type he might try to object".
"Works for me! Good time for us to have our own meal. The townmaster can't force Adabra to come to town if she doesn't want to, anyhow." Echo bounces on the balls of her feet, her excitement evident, as she waited for Khessa to speak with the townmaster. "Oh yeah, Jasper, what were you collecting on the way back? Seems like you found a lot!"
To Khessa: “Yes, of course! And a discussion about the delivery of food to Adabra. She could help make sure the manticore is fed while we continue on our journey.”
ToEcho: “I, I was looking for and gathering plants that I can use to make potions and other remedies for injuries. My father taught me what kind of plants to use and what natural properties they can bring. Healing, resist poisons, boosts of energy…They can be expensive so I try to find the ingredients in the wild to cut that cost down.”
"Hey Harbin," the blonde warrior waves her hand in the direction of the window "I'm Khessa, we are the adventurers you just hired this morning. "Oh, you lot," said Harbin through the door. "Foolish woman, she's going to be eaten by the dragon."
There is some shuffling and Harbin begins pushing coins under the door, one by one.
"One, two, three..." he counts as he goes. About five minutes later, "twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five...There! For a job well done even if Adabra is determined to get herself eaten."
((Congratulations, you've reached level 2! Feel free to RP resting at the inn since it's evening by now and RP anything you would like to do during a downtime period.))
..."One, two, three..." he counts as he goes. About five minutes later, "twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five...There! For a job well done even if Adabra is determined to get herself eaten." ...
Khessa shares the prize equally among all (5 gp each).
Then, she follows Adabra's advice, quickly going back to Tom the butcher and asking him to arrange a regular delivery of meat to the windmill (so Tookrashk will be kept well fed).
After that, the tall warrior proposes to the party: "Well, we faced a not negligible threat together and we came out without a scratch! To celebrate our success, since Falver offered breakfast this morning and I have not yet been able to repay, if you want to have dinner with me at the inn, this time I will offer!" and he starts walking "Are you coming with me?"
Tom the Butcher agrees to deliver meat to Adabra's windmill.
"Aye, I can do that," he said to the party when they returned to his shop. "Adabra's a fine woman, always done right by the village. It would only be right to help her out any ways I can."

"Thanks Tom!" Khessa kisses him on the cheek "You're a good man".
Rel attempts to look nonchalant and stoic about the 5 gold pieces but her relief is clear. It's not that she's never seen gold. She has, and large sums of it as a bastard daughter of a drow noble house. It's just that it's never been hers. In her current circumstance, she is destitute.
It's also that her family's money has been ill-gotten. As slavers. Not for doing good as the party has done.
She thinks about Khessa's offer of dinner and eventually nods.
I am racking up debts like a deep gnome with a gambling problem!
"Thank you. Thank all of you - you are worthy companions. And one day, I hope to repay my debts,Khessa Cabbagefield. And to you,Falver Wildheart."
How much better to have this kind of debt to... friends... than the kind debt I have towards the Mizzrym family and my lady mother... and to the orcs that attacked Roywyn's clan.
Receiving gold for a good deed seems a little selfish. Jasper thinks to himself. He pulls a small box from his pack and places one gold piece in it. Places the other four in his coin pouch strapped to his belt.
To Echo: “Do you know anything about herbalism? Some potions take a day or much longer to make. And help from an experienced herbalist helps reduce that time. It also takes about 25 gold in materials to make them. But worth it in the long run. Trading or use in dire circumstances.”
To Khessa: “Thank you Khessa! I appreciate the meal tonight. It is good of you.”
To Khessa: “Thank you Khessa! I appreciate the meal tonight. It is good of you.”
To everyone: “What shall we do tomorrow?”
"You're welcome, my friend!" smiles Khessa "Tomorrow, early in the morning, I had planned a training with Echo...She was interested in combat, I was interested in magic... But it will not take too long andimmediately afterwards I would say to undertake another mission for Harbin. I'd like to go and warn the dwarven prospectors of the danger of the white dragon. Unless someone prefers otherwise, of course".
To Khessa: “Warning the dwarves sounds like a good idea. And training? Sounds interesting. I would like to go find a place to get provisions. Some more rations and maybe some rope.”

"Echo is from around here..." points out Khessa "for sure she'll know if there's a shop like that in town".
(Echo, you know that the two best places in town to buy supplies are Barthen's Provisions which sells general goods on the north side of town and the Lion Shield Coster, which sells arms and armor.)
Echo takes the coins in her hands and holds one up so it catches the last light of the day, the shine reflected in her eyes. She places it in a leather pouch hanging around her waist and pats it proudly. Hearing Khessa, she chimes in, "going to the prospectors tomorrow sounds good to me!"
To Jasper: "I'm not really familiar with herbs and potions and stuff like that, but I think Barthen's place might have some of what you need? It's got a bit of everything. I'm going to be needing more rope too! There's also another place called Lionshield Coster that has things like weapons and armour, they aren't anything too fancy though."
