Paul nods to Muir and opens his palm upwards summoning a minor illusion of several spectral floating words in auran, Muir reads, 'cyclical ecosystem biome lab: floral growth' and Paul grunts "that's what it says on the door, if that makes sense to you. The walls are clad with flat surface tree, would that work to trap them?"
The groups reach the floor and find Sam and the monster, kind of facing off, though now it looks more like the kind of face off a dog owner might have with their overly energised Rottweiler than an actual fight. The rest of the room is in disarray, half of the floor near to the door is covered in chemical sludge and the strong smell of burning is emanating from an unknown source.
The monster nods to Sam and walks away from him, sniffing at the floor and then the walls, "we find others, then eat gold! Follow me!" It squeals in delighted orcish and then promptly phases through the wall, which is immediately met with screaming from the adjacent room.
Paul and Ingram look at eachother with an 'oh shit' face, and Paul darts toward the door. Immediately after stepping in the sludge he screams and you watch as the skin on his hand reddens and cracks, his cloak starts smouldering at the hem and burning upward as though alight though there is no flame in sight. He jumps back shouting in auran, obviously pained and still flailing around with something still very wrong.
"No! Wait! Hey!" Sam calls after the monster. Not full on shouts as he doesn't want to spook it and make it run but...
Sam immediately rushes towards the first door he sees in that direction and is a bit frustrated as some soldier in a cloak jumps in front of him to grab the door first. Before Sam can shove him out of the way or even just yell at him to do so, the moron is already screaming his head off... And smoldering? Dude is on fire?? Sam doesn't actually see flames but without a body of water to throw at him or him into he decides on the next best course of action - Stop, drop and roll. Forcibly. Sam grabs the soldier, forces them both to the ground and then rolls the both of them away from the door to try to smother any flames...
Grapple: Nat 20 for a 28 (in case the soldier contests the grapple)
Paul's flailing is cut short as Sam's quick thinking bring the drow down to the floor and the pair roll away from the burning sludge. Sam feels the heat coming off Paul, the invisible chemical flames lick at Sam's skin and burn down his throat as he inhales but rolling himself too he stops burning after a moment the damage done but not continuing.
Paul sits clutching his burned hand and through painted gritted teeth looks toward the door, "what the hells!?"
The screams of shock from the scientists in the room next door continue along with some banging and a droning bassy voice from the monster, though it's words are lost through the solid walls
Vin has no idea what the illusory words say, and waits for Muir to translate.
When the creature disappears through the wall, and Paul starts to burn, he looks at the sludge. Invisible flames. What are they doing in here that was so volatile?
He watches as Sam tackles Paul and rolls him across the floor, reaching out and trying to douse the flames on them from a little distance. He will try with the sludge as well, but he has no idea how far it has spread and whether he can.
"Are you from here or Shenoh, Paul? We might need a guide who knows this place, bearing in mind how dangerous it appears to be".
(OOC: prestidigitation doesn't say you have to see the fire, so worth a try)
Still hearing the screaming from beyond the door, and not wanting to lose the monster to this unfamiliar building / city / crystal structure labyrinth, Sam gets up off the floor and hurries off in pursuit. He pauses as he approaches the door and glances from the sludge of spilled whatever, to the soldier and then back again. Sam sees no way through the door but through the sludge... He figures if he can't avoid it he should at least make it quick and runs thought it as fast as he can and then through the door... Hoping it is not locked.
Vin's magic doesn't seem to do anything, or at least he cannot see if it is doing anything, with the sludge puddle taking up at least half of this room he figures it would take a while of focussing on specific areas before the fire would be out either way and even then it would need testing to see whether it worked.
"Agh! I'm from shenoh, but I've been posted here the past five years" Paul grunts through gritted teeth as he rises from the floor and takes a look at the burns on his hand, he then looks to Sam "quick thinking, uhh thanks for putting me ou-" but Sam has already started darting towards the door, jumping over the first bit of sludge sam can't help but land in and move through around 15ft of the stuff, gritting through the pain he barrels into the door and swings it open finding himself on fire and in a larger lobby style area, (3 fire damage, which will continue to burn if not put out) looking left he sees another door to the adjoining room.
Scooby whimpers from the hole above but a low whistle from Ömertyr, who apparently hasn't joined the group, draws the dogs attention.
Vin looks around trying to find something to put out the fire, hoping that if Ginro was dealing with such flammable material there would be precautions. As he does so he calls Bry'ze out and hops on so he doesn't have to run through sludge himself.
Neferox sticks close, not so bothered by the flames.
"So you know which of these rooms are dangerous then? What is through there?", Vin asks of Paul, motioning where Sam went.
Sam does his best to mimic the proverbial bull in the china shop... Though hopefully with a bit less breakage. He barges through the first door with barely a thought given to the fire damage he takes while rushing to and through it. Pausing just long enough to spot the other door, make some half-assed brushing motions at the fire upon him, and listen for the direction the monster may be in, Sam rushes right off again without giving a thought to where he may be barging in to or what may be behind the door...
Elthana continues to walk along the ceiling and starts down the wall, watching the proceedings from above. She's stopped in her tracks as Paul gets burned and Sam takes him down to get rid of whatever flame is going on. When she sees Sam run through the door, she tries to go through it from the top, around the door frame - hoping she can keep her inverted gravity in check.
What was that on the floor and where were the other two? She starts to feel a sensation of panic... what destruction have they done?
What a nightmare, Gewyn thinks. "Spyro, follow Sam, let me know if an emergency comes up that needs my attention."
He kneels down next to Paul. "Hey there, it's going to be okay. Let me see those wounds." Cittern music begins playing in the air as Gewyn places a hand on Paul's and sends healing magic through his burns. (9 hp Cure Wounds)
As Elthana follows from along the wall, Ingram slaps his forehead in shame of himself, the excitement seeming to have momentarily loosened his senses. He runs to the nearest wall and up out of the reach of any invisible flame, approaching the door from safety.
Paul accepts the healing gratefully, the burns vanish from his skin and it seems to Gewyn the damage was not too deep at all, whatever is causing this invisible fire it does not burn as hot as regular flames but seems to be more difficult to quash. Once healed Paul follows Ingram and exits the room, though he raises a sending stone and in auran reports the fire to those connected to the security of the Isle.
As Vin and Nef follow using their own methods, Paul answers, "these labs aren't anything special, people working on stuff specifically for Ginro, y'know, the archival vault is in this wing and so are some of his personal projects". As Paul is saying this Sam busts down the door to the secondary lab and is met with a mostly comical scene. Two scientist tinkerers waving prosthetic hand attachments in the air trying to act large to scare off the monster, but obviously terrified at the same time. The monster itself trying to explain in orcish, "no you not get it, friends follow, we go find gold room! Need to find more friends so we can go to gold room!" As Sam surveys the scene, the monster spots him and it's one large eye widens with glee 'heyyyyy! You came!"
"It's ok. It's ok," Sam says in common to the people in Common, hoping they understand. "They're not hurting anyone, just causing a mess... You see where the other two went?"
Turning to the monster and reaching out towards it slowly, Sam move carefully to approach it. "Of course I came," Sam assures. "But it better you follow me and just point the way. These people are getting scared. It better we go through these fake holes instead of a direct line... But come, come... We'll find friends then all the gold you want..."
With that, Sam will indeed try to direct the creature through doors instead of walls as they try to figure out where the other two went...
Muir sighs and walks along the ceiling following Ingram. He looks into the room and sees the destruction, shaking his head. He wonders if he could just find the tree room or the Rocs on his own....
Vin and Neferox hang back as Vin continues to look around for something to put out the fire.
"What sort of personal projects? Have you seen any? And what is in the archival vault? Is it historical documents and the like, or just more items?", he asks Paul.
Elthana follows along with Sam, not understanding the orc language, but finding it a bit amusing as the creature seems so happy to see the man that just hit him with a maul. She hopes that it will lead them to the other two creatures... "Didn't they go down further? I'm not really sure... was a bit preoccupied."
" the vault is the one I found you all in, though it's not much of a vault any more filled with holes" paul shrugs, motioning to the room they just came out of and upwards a little as he answers vin, before taking in the scene proper "as for his personal experiments, I know he's been concentraing on the teleportation matrix for the past month or so, it's taken up basically all of his time" he adds.
The two scientists slow with their waving of the prosthetic hands and raise incredulous eyebrows at sam, but to their utter bewilderment the monster seems pleased and listens to Sam, it's tongue lolling out of the maw atop its body as it waddles on over to him and speaks back in their shared orcish tongue, "we take the strange tunnels then? go find friends, go find gold!!"
With the monster leading the group, and Paul trying to keep the group updated as to their heading, though having to change as the monster sniffs around and changes course more then once, it is not long before the group find the second of the three targets, you enter a large room lined with desks and folks sat doing paperwork, each of the clerks look up as you enter and give the group odd and confused looks some standing in suprise or fear at the sight of the monster, or perhaps the rest of you, walking past these desks you find one raiesd above the others at the end of the room, looking over eveything and at that desk is a mousy looking dragonborn woman who peers at you through thick glasses, guards flank her sides and she clears her throat and makes a mental assumption before deciding to ask in common, "what can the treasury do for you all today?"
“My friend here,” Sam says, indicating the monster, “would like to make a withdrawal… More importantly, we believe his friend is already inside and doing so. Believe it not, you really should open up and let us in…” Sam is suddenly finding this all quite hilarious though and smirks and small laughs make their way through despite the seriousness of the problem. But, after all, it’s not his gold…
Persuasion? 21
Still, the hulking monster and possible flames still upon Sam seem to lend some credibility to the Half-Orc’s words…
Vin, still looking for something to put out the invisible flames, continues to ask questions of Paul.
"I guess once he figured out the portal energy could be harnessed, that makes sense. Have you seen them experiment on creatures here? It sounds like they do with plants after all".
