"I'm not sure if anyone really does trade with your realm, you guys are the first I've met from another realm" Paul responds and Ingram concurs.
The monster within the vault looks to Sam and seems caught, it listens to the words as 'timmy' continues to explain in an unknown language that sounds like scrapes and grunts, it glances to Sam's maul at his side and then raises its haunches and tries to quickly get a few final bites in, like a dog caught with something in it's mouth.
Sam realises this from his time with dogs that the monster is just getting as much in it's mouth before fully expecting to be dragged away and scolded. The room around it is in tatters but the only door in and out is the one Sam is standing in. The one guard with the scroll, Elthana, and Gewyn behind him ready, Vin, Muir, Ingram, and Paul a little further back but the two shenoans seem to be approaching ready to jump in should something turn violent.
The vault guard raises the scroll and looks to Sam for confirmation.
"Tommy...." Sam says in a long, drawn out scolding scowl or a sound in Orcish to try to encourage the creature to give up it's stubbornness and come with him. "Listen to Timmy and me... You'll have plenty to eat... and a variety of your favorites... But you need to let the people think they're in charge..."
Sam isn't sure the creatures can understand such complicated concepts as deception and self-denial for future benefits but if not then hopefully Timmy is more convincing with simpler terms.
Turning to lead the way out Sam spots those looking to come in and, more importantly, the guard with the scroll. "Well? You want to make way to let us out of do you want to imprison the gold eating monster in your vault?"
Elthana moves out of the way so that Sam can show that he is leading the creatures out of the vault. She keeps an eye on the now dubbed Tommy, hoping he'll listen to reason. If not, she's ready to jump in and make him listen.
Seeing that Sam isn't coming in to physically drag the creature away, the new monster relaxes its haunches and looks to Timmy, before continuing to munch gold, (Timmy very much failed his persuasion) the guard steps aside letting Sam leave if he wishes and begins reading off the scroll. As the magic peels from the thick parchment the monster within the vault stops stock still paralysed within a hold monster spell. The guard points over and says something which Ingram translates for the group, "it's greed is deafening it to your words, but it cannot move for a minute, please assist us to remove it" the guard then dashes into the room, gold and gems thrashing in jingly crescendo around his feet as he wakes into the mess and begins pushing the paralysed monster toward the vault door.
((The intention was that Sam walked fully in and up to it and only took a step or two away hoping it would follow but... *shrug* This works too.))
"Remove it?" Sam asks skeptically. "Within a minute? To where??" The thing was at least as large as Sam itself and far more tree-like in that it's width was as widthy all the way around. Sam figured he could probably drag it around if he had to but...
"It's not like I can put it in me pocket and walk around the place, now is it?" he asks, his skepticism only building.
"And what, my boy, do you think it'll do when your minute is up? Enjoy the ride or thrash out with those three clawed arms and that big yawping maw of teeth??"
"Remove it!" Sam repeats again, this time with a bit of an unbelieving sight and directed more towards Elthana. "Can you believe this guy?"
After a moment or three of contemplation Sam turns to Timmy and speaks in Orcish. "Can you talk to it? Still? Can it understand you despite it being all..."
"Hey! Scroll boy! Can he understand us?" Sam calls over in Common. "Does it's ears still work? It's brain?? Assuming they have them and all..."
"Yeah, so Timmy,' in Orcish again, "Can you try some more to explain to him that he'll be fed. Well fed. Treated all nice and proper... IF HE WAITS. That if he tries to steal any more food without permission that the mean people living here will hurt him. Will hurt you and the other one as well. And you three may be bigger and all but there is far, far more of them and they have scary magics and spells and, quite frankly, they're the worst. They know more ways to pain and torture than you three even know of different things to eat... Frankly if any of you eat one more piece of gold or such without permission I don't know if I'll be able to save any of ya's from their wrath."
As Sam gives this speech in Orcish he speaks as much to Tommy as he does to Timmy, hoping his threats and promises of retribution upon not only one but their brethren will help convince Tommy to stop...
"away from gold" the guard states in very broken common, showing that he does understand Sam but lacks the necessary vocabulary to confidently answer the larger question.
Timmy listens to Sam's orcish words and waddles up to its smaller counterpart, Timmy's mouth watering as it restrains itself passing over the mounds of gold at it's feet, it speaks to the paralysed monster and when the paralysing effect breaks the new monster Tommy ducks his head in shame and follows the group out of the door.
The guard seems pleased with the outcome and closes and locks the vault door, reporting back to his dragonborn superior.
Then Tommy begins speaking, but not in orcish. Those who understand dwarvish hear him say, "these big dwarves must be very rich, we do what they say and we are fed much much more yes?"
Vin moves back over to stand near Ingram and Paul again, aware of the attempts to remove the creature but not involving himself whilst the creatures remain non-violent.
"So", he carries on his previous line of questioning, possibly injecting in some Muir thinking. "If the guards here are all from Shenoh, and a large portion of folk from Shenoh were corrupted by Mori, how do we know none of those that got positioned here are corrupted?", he asks casually, just wondering.
Sam is relieved when Timmy does indeed give it a go to earnestly convince Tommy of their need for restraint. Sam isn't totally opposed to killing these creatures but in finding out that they are capable of speech and all... Well they're not just pure monsters then, are they?
"I think it's working," Sam says to the others. Mainly Elthana and the guard since the other others seem to be standing around with their thumbs in uncomfortable places talking as if it's just another day at the office and they're killing time until it's officially break time. "I think Timmy is... Wait, what? You see that?" Sam asks suddenly. He looks back to Timmy again but... Nothing. Sam give his head a shake and mentally shrugs. Who knows what these creatures are or what is normal for them, eh?
"Yes, that's right... Come along," Sam says encouragingly as Tommy starts following Timmy towards the door.
Sam raises an eyebrow when the creatures switch to Dwarvish. He considers just listening in for a while in case they think they're speaking privately but decides persuasion is still the best tactic. "Yes, yes... Feed much, much more!" he assures in the Dwarvish. "Feed you so much you'll have full stomaches and not want any more... Now, let's find the third of you, eh? Can you sniff them out? Using the funny tunnels?"
Seeing that the monsters were now out of the vault, Elthana stands back as well and is just now realizing what Vin is asking about. She turns her attention in that direction.
"We were given a breif on what has happened on shenoh, all guards who are posted here were to attend and not one missed the meet. we arent a large delegation, but we are chosen from the closest guard to shenoh herself. the working theory that we heard was that those effected by Mori were under her, but I've heard some may have also been under Vinghov... but weren't all those effected basically feral? do you think someone in our delegation could be effected but merely hiding it?" Paul answers Vin and asks back genuinely concerned.
As the guard closes and locks the vault door he seems relieved, though not looking forward to having to explain the mess, "thank yew" he manages to say in common but the words exit his mouth in an awkward and uncomforting fashion regardless of his level of authenticity. Sam with his two new unlikely followers meets up with the group and begins to follow the noses of the large and medium monsters Tommy and Timmy. The Dragonborn looking a little flustered bids the group a glad farewell speaking of giving a glowing report to Ginro for the group's speedy and effective problem solving.
As they walk, the monsters enthuse about the isle, the amount of gold in this place, the walls being made of gems! after getting massively lost and having to ask Paul for direction, the group seem to have ascended many many steps and are halfway down a corridor following the monsters sniffing out the third of their party when they both stop and look at eachother, then turn to Sam, the large one, in orcish says, "they was moving fast, through the walls, up and up and up, but now their smell is... lots of places." it sqeezes its eye into what might be a frown before looking up at the ceiling, and continuing, "something wrong, what do we do? do we still gets gold?"
"The magic was bound to items, not people. Most of the creatures reverted to their true form when Mori's staff was broken, but even before that there was a foreman at the mornlyf factory who broke a bell and a small number of creatures reverted. Someone on Ginro might have a similar item", Vin explains to Paul and shrugs. "I am not sure how likely it is, or not, but it is possible".
He then follows after the others and continues chatting if there is more to say.
Muir listens and thinks about the possibilities before speaking “It seems unlikely that Nivarra did nothing here and only focused on Shenoh. If your plan is to take over the realm than something should be done on each isle. That makes the most tactical sense….if not undead creatures then what?”
"We go where they will feed you," Sam says in Orcish, since that is what they used latestly...
"Umm, I think the third when got exploded into bits somehow," Sam says in Common to Elthana and the bystanders. "Where we taking these two? To where the third one went blooey or you got someplace they maybe can't eat through?"
"Don't worry," Sam says in Orcish to the monsters. "We'll just be following this one to the safe place of gold and other yummies," he adds, indicating whoever steps up with some idea of where to take the creatures. "Once you two are settled and eating I'll see about your friend..."
Gewyn yawns as he walks along, idly tuning his cittern, but not plucking any notes. "Well now that Sam's got that mess cleaned mostly up, we'll hopefully be turning our attention soon to rest and strategy. I want to pick some of your brains about something when we have some privacy."
"Blown up?" Elthana asks a little surprised by the situation. She looks to the other two to see how they are reacting to what Sam is saying.
Hearing Muir, she starts wondering as well, "Do you think it was just the creation of the box? Maybe all the focus on this isle was in that?" Turning to Paul, "I don't suppose there is anyone on this isle that um... looks like me?" she swallows hard, worried about the answer.
“I’m guessing,” Sam answers Elthana in Common. “They were tracking the third easily enough but then suddenly the scent was all over the place… Unless you have another idea?”
Muir deep in thought pays no attention to the monsters. "The box....yes the schematics but if you were Nivarra would you put a plan in place to protect the box just in case? It seems likely if she had a plan for the other isle that she would have some sort of plan here too. She's had many years to plan....It just seems unlikely there is nothing planned here as well."
The light radiating from deep within the crystal ceiling over head flickers and then steadies, a moment later several white clad science looking ass people come rushing past and Paul calls out in auran asking what's happened. A hasty response later and he look to Sam with wide eyes. "Erm... Something got into one of the turbines and it seems the turbine won. I think... Maybe don't tell the monsters, I don't know if they'll be upset or not."
Turning to Elthana Paul answers, "uh yeah there are other shadowborn on this isle and most of the other isles... Or what do you mean 'like you'?"
Ingram stops and gives a sigh, "is that it then? I know Ginro said to retrieve all three but I'm pretty sure he doesn't want bagged up slop of what might have happened to the last one. I want to get back to bed either way, sleep off what's left of this hangover... let's get this escort mission over with eh? Muir did you say that we could maybe trap these things in the flora experiment room place"
Muir thinks for a moment "Store the monsters in the experiment room? I don't think I said that. I mentioned wanting to visit that room for the tree that is there as well as checking on the rocs that I have befriended. I do not recall saying to store them there though."
