Arl starts cleaning up, apologizing as he does so.
“Beg pardon, normally I’d leave you be but this morning we are in a bit of a rush. There’s to be a wake this morning for poor old Urgon Wenth. He was quite a fixture in the community, but now he’s died and the whole town will be having a service at the cemetery here shortly. You should come too, it would be the proper thing to do. I know the town would appreciate it if you paid your respects.”
“Looks like one of the guests didn’t make it down for breakfast, he must be sleeping in. I’ll set aside some of this for him and leave him a little note to join us at the cemetery.”
Brytniss clomps down the stairs, thankfully fully dressed, though off by a button, she goes over and slugs down a little of the breakfast that's set aside and looks at the group like nothing happened.
"So, what're we doin'"?
She's got a bit of dopey charm to her as she munches politely
Faloniir will nod and say, "Absolutely, I would be happy to attend." To himself, he will think, Fenton pointedly ignored my question about Raegrin, so either he's involved or this criminal organization has a deeper hold on this village than I thought. Faloniir will glance over at Irven, Honor, and Magic. Could be he's just keeping out of it to protect his family. Either way, I'll keep an eye on him. Who knows? Maybe Raegrin'll turn up to pay his respects. Faloniir smiles, knowing it to be a long shot, but in his line of work, stranger things have happened.
“Faloniir, you asked a question and I almost forgot about it in the bustle of everything. You were looking for your cousin Raegrin, you said? I’m sorry, can’t say I know the fellah. What does he do in town?”
Arl welcomes you to head to the cemetery with him. He explains,
“Urgon was a veteran explorer of the Eisencross frozen waste. He was very successful in finding lost artifacts from a bygone civilization that used to be up there, and he’s brought a lot of trade and financial success to the town as a result. Though it seems his adventuring has caught up to him. They say the manner of his death was… unusual. I heard it from the mayor himself that he came down with some kind of sickness and then, we’ll, he froze solid…”
Arl shivers as he relates this. “I know it’s cold here, but… poor Urgon, I hope he didn’t suffer too much.”
Faloniir, you notice that Arl gives you a sideways glance as he overhears your conversation with Fenton. You may give an insight check to see how well you can interpret his expression.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Faloniir will speak to Fenton casually on the way to the cemetery, "Well, it's a bit embarrassing to talk about, but I believe he may be involved in some... criminal activates around these parts." Faloniir will offer an embarrassed smirk, "So it's probably a good thing you don't know of him. You wouldn't happen to have heard about anything like that would you? I'm not here to judge; every little town has its not-so-secret-secrets. I just want to find Raegrin before he does something stupid." Noticing Arl's sideways glance, Faloniir will only half listen to Fenton as he focuses on the old dwarf.
Arl makes a little grimace and you see the light of recognition in his eyes at the name of Raegrin.
Fenton says,
“Certainly there is some crime in this area. The value of artifacts coming through here out of Eisencross can sometimes be significant. Irven and I feel pretty safe because we have the good will of much of the town, and mostly we are interested in books,” (here he gives Irven a significant glance, and you notice Irven give a half smile and pat at something in his cloak pocket) “which bandits and criminals fortunately undervalue, so we haven’t been targeted.”
Faloniir will nod politely as Fenton speaks, making the appropriate noises at the appropriate times, but his attention is on Arl as best it can be, Hmm... It seems our host might be harboring a few secrets himself... Faloniir files this bit of information away and stands quietly with his arms in front of him during the eulogy, one hand grasping the other wrist. At the mention of the manner of death, he suppresses an involuntary shiver, wondering what baubles the explorer traded his life for.
Snow gently falls from the sky and wind bites your cheeks as you stand in the graveyard. It appears that most of the town has turned out for the occasion. The eulogy is given by Elro Aldataur, a weathered elf, retired ranger, and the leader of the village. Urgon’s body presumably rests hidden from view inside a simple pine box, which is ready to be lowered into a freshly dug grave. Irven and Fenton bow their heads respectfully, and the tiefling children are well-behaved. Arl wipes a tear from his eye.
Once the occasion has ended, townsfolk meander away, back to their daily routine, including the book merchant family (they give you a heartfelt farewell and hope to cross paths again soon). But Elro, the village elder, approaches your group with a sense of purpose, intent to reach you before you can disperse. He says,
“Thank you for attending Urgon’s service. I’m sorry to speak of dark tidings under such circumstances, but I believe that Palebank Village might be in danger, and I’m hoping you can help us. If we linger here a few moments, then the crowd will be dispersed and we can speak in privacy. I don’t want to alarm the town.”
Fro tells Arl, I am sorry for the loss of your friend. She is caught off guard by the tears, not because she feels the pain he feels, but because she doesn't understand it. I have never had a friend that I would cry for'she thinks in her head 'Maybe someday that will change.'
She turns to Elro. "Danger you say? I will hear you out."
After hearing enough Gilwynn says "You mentioned you are interested in books what sort of books?" "You also mentioned some artifacts from Eisencross are there ruins there that contain these artifacts?"
(assuming this was directed at Irven and Fenton)
The pair explain to you on the way to the cemetery that they buy and sell rare and expensive books, any book will do as long as it's valuable, as they will know who would be willing to pay top dollar for it.
As for Eisencros, yes supposedly there are ruins there of a once-great civilization that has fallen for unknown reasons. Only the bravest and hardiest adventurers go there, because of the extremely harshly cold and dangerous northern climate.

Now that everyone has departed the cemetery, you are left alone with Elro. He says,
"I don't know if you heard any rumors, but Urgon's death was... unnatural. He had returned from a prolonged excursion in Eiselcross about 2 months ago. After only a few days he came down with some sort of illness. Blue veins appeared all over his body, he moved more slowly, and he felt chilled to the bone. At first we thought it was just exposure to the extreme conditions in Eiselcross catching up to him, but his condition persisted and worsened gradually. The village priests tried every spell they could muster, but nothing worked and poor Urgon's body eventually froze and turned to solid ice.
"At first we assumed this an isolated incident related to his venturing into Eiselcross. Everyone knows there are unknown dangers there. But just yesterday I was made aware of something that greatly concerns me. Another villager has come down with the same symptoms. Her name is Tulgi Latan, she's a trapper who mostly keeps to herself. I tried talking to her about it but she just pushed me away and said to let her die in peace."
"I'm concerned that this ailment could spread further, and we don't even know what it is or how to cure it. I'm hoping you'll be willing to talk to Tulgi. She doesn't like me or the authorities in town, but she might open up to you adventerous outsider types. And I recognize this could be dangerous, you might be exposing yourself. I can offer 100 gold hazard pay. We need to get to the bottom of this! If you're willing, we can take you to Urgon's cabin for searching, and direct you to Tulgi's cabin, it's a few miles out of town, up into the mountains, just into the treeline. Well, adventurers, will you help out Palebank Village?"
"100 gp, Wow!" thinks Fro, "Even split among this group, that is a lot of money." She quickly looks at Erlo. "Please lead the way sir, I would be happy to meet with this Tulgi, but I do think that checking out Urgons cabin first may be a good idea."
Banyan follows quietly behind the group, keeping to himself and reflecting on the situation he finds himself in. A visitor in a foreign village, invited to attend the funeral of an unknown villager. Not your typical start to the day, but Banyan could see that this meant a lot to the innkeeper. Banyan was sure that as the morning progressed he would come to understand more. For now, the best bet was to simply listen and be present.
The service itself was simple but pleasant. The deceased seemed like a decent enough person, and certainly, the locals had come out to mourn. It was what happened after though that Banyan had been expecting.

There was genuine concern in the Elder's voice as he explained the situation. Banyan drew in closer, listening intently. Somewhere in amongst the discussion was mention of gold, But Banyan's mind was taken to questions that arose.
"How long did you say the symptoms lasted? 2 Months? And no one close to him is showing symptoms as well? That seems a good indication that this isn't contagious, but being caused by some external source. Very worrying. Yes, of course I am willing to help you out."
Elro takes you to Urgon’s house in the village, a one-story, one-room log cabin.
“You can start here,” says Elro. “Then you can check on Tulgi. Her cabin is less than 4 miles up the Mountain path out the Eastern village exit. Of course the path is covered in snow this time of year but it’s marked and is fairly straight. Once you enter the tree line look for a small fork in the path to the north, that will lead to her cabin. Please report back with your successes. I’m counting on you!”

(Would Brytniss know Raegrin, being a gambler herself?)

Possibly if Bryntiss lives in Palebank village, which I assumed not but could be wrong on that point
