The box of lokum is about the size of a small book, and it is decorated with intricate patterns of gold and red. Inside, its contents wrapped in shiny, colorful paper. It's clear that the box is well-made, with a sturdy cardboard frame and a smooth, glossy finish. The sweets inside are small and cubical, about the size of a die. They are colored in soft pastels, ranging from pale pink to light green, and have a slightly powdery texture. Each sweet is coated in a fine layer of sugar, sparkling in the light. When you bite into one of the lokum, you are rewarded with a burst of flavor. The sweetness of the sugar is tempered by the spices and perfumes of the street, making for a complex and delicious taste. The texture is soft and chewy, giving your jaw a satisfying workout as you savor the treat.
The box of lokum would cost you 2sp.
“500 gp, is it? Hahaha! Henna is getting bold.”Hakaan laughs, the most annoying, chattering laugh filling the room. As the gnoll opens his mouth, you see sharp teeth coated with saliva and bites of unfinished food. He tears another bite off a turkey leg as he continues, his voice dripping with amusement. “Let me guess, she’s hired you to retrieve the eye for her, because she’s scared of going into the Perfume District herself. Haha! Here’s the deal, my guests. I will pay you 800 gp, if you work for me, instead of Henna.”
It becomes clear that Hakaan has no intention of inviting you to join his meal, and you're pretty sure he's already taken a bite of everything on the table. He wipes his furry, greasy gnoll paw on his thawb, patting his distended belly before continuing.
“Is there something else behind? Bwhahah! Of course there is! The eye is a powerful magic item, you see, and it is said whoever holds it have the power to control any cat they want. Naturally Henna would want it. So I want it too! Hahaha! The look on her face when she finds out!”Hakaan's laughter echoes through the courtyard, making it clear that he finds the situation highly amusing. "So, what do you say, my guests?" he asks, a big sly grin spreading across his face.
Daphyra:
As you listen to Hakaan's words, you find yourself convinced that he is being truthful about the gem. There's a certain sincerity in his tone and manner that suggests he has no reason to deceive you on this matter. You can't help but notice, however, that there's an undercurrent of tension between Hakaan and Henna that seems to run deeper than a simple business rivalry.
Kerra:
The fountain in the center of the courtyard is gurgling and bubbling with crystal clear water. The water flows from the top of the fountain in graceful arcs, sparkling in the sunlight. You smell fresh scent of juniper, leaves ruffling with the soft gusts of wind. You don't notice anything out of place.
As you listen to Hakaan's speech, you can sense a certain truthfulness in his words regarding the gem. However, you also sense a deeper, more personal motive behind his offer. There is a certain eagerness in his voice when he mentions Henna, as if he relishes the idea of outwitting and embarrassing her, and it seems he's more interested in humiliating Henna than getting the gem. You also can't help but feel a certain level of skepticism towards Hakaan's offer. His laugh and demeanor seem to betray a certain level of deceit and trickery, and you suspect that he's not intending to pay you in full, and only wants you to work for him instead of Henna.
Natasha frowns at the mention of control. She slowly steps back, desiring to let the others take over the conversation. She has her feelings on it, and slowly mulls over in her head the idea of doing this for EITHER of them. “What do you mean by ‘control’, my lord? The control of non-sentient felines, or Tabaxi like Kerra?”
Hakaan smirks as he speaks, his greasy paw waving dismissively through the air. He starts peeling a crab and sucking the meat out of the leg. The sound of crab shells being cracked and wet noise of meat being sucked out echoes through the courtyard. The gnoll’s laughter is annoying and grating, full of haughty self-satisfaction.
"Control, you know, charm, befriend, dominate," he says with his mouth full, relishing each word. "Would it affect a tabaxi? Hahaha! How interesting.”Hakaan muses, a wicked gleam in his eyes. "You know, little sister, the legend is actually quite unclear. Who knows? Hahaha!" He chuckles to himself, the sound making your skin crawl. "Wouldn't it be fun to try?"
“No… it wouldn’t. People deserve freedom.” The woman says. She’s resisting every damnable urge she has to reach over and slap the Nine Hells out of this Gnoll with everything in her. “You’re free to do as you please, why shouldn’t others have that same freedom?”

She wouldn't have agreed to this if she'd known what the gem would do. She'd known this city did not hold slavery in as much abhorrence as her home, but she'd had a vague idea about people being born into it, rather than an active slave trade with people being forced into it with items like this gem.
Her eyes widen at the implication and her ears tremble with emotion.
Her mind races. Maybe they could find the gem and destroy it, or give it to someone who would use it for good instead of evil. Then neither Henna and Hakaan would be able to use it.
She pipes up. "How do we know you will pay us for the gem once we retrieve it? We would like half of the money up front, and the rest when we bring the gem to you." She offers Hakaam the last sweet in the lokum box to sweeten the deal. persuasion : 4
Now that was the right question! Kerra frowned a bit when Daphyra offered more food to that fat dog but did not say anything. Very quietly, only for the sensitive ears of those close to her, she commented "we can play them against each other when the time comes."
Louder she added another question to the pile. "Have you seen the gem before? Can you describe it?"
“Hahahaha! Imagine that!”Hakaan laughs, sucking the meat out of the crab and tossing the shell aside with a careless flick of his paw. His fingers are slick with grease and spit, his chewing loud and wet, “I don’t care what other people have or don’t have. I just want the gem. And I want you all to get it for me.”
As Daphyra offers him a sweet, the gnoll snatches it eagerly, tossing it in his mouth, his tongue darting out to lap up the powdered sugar on his paw. But his greedy hunger soon turns to suspicion, his laughter morphing into a guttural growl like an animal warning off its prey. "No deal,"he snarls, his laughter like a hornet's nest ready to burst. "How would I know if you won't take the gold and take off? I need to see the gem. You give me the gem, I give you the gold. Fair for everyone. Haha!"
With a flick of his paw, he gestures towards Kerra, his eyes narrowing with a fierce intensity. "It looks like an eye, just like everyone says it does. Now, are you guys going to take the job or not?" His words hang in the air like a challenge, daring you to make a move.
Natasha frowns. Once more, she wanted to reach over the table and…
She calmed herself, taking a few noticeable deep breaths before stepping back, resigning herself to silence in order to let the others decide. Surely they wouldn’t agree to this, would they?
Again, very quietly Kerra breathed out "He thinks he can get away without payment. Don't know how but he does. Nobody said the cat really wants to pay either. I say we get the gem and let them fight for it."
Hearing Kerra, Daphyra nods slowly, and just as slowly, crosses the fingers of one forepaw behind her back, the other still clutching the now-empty lokum box. She looks each of the group in the eye before turning back to the gnoll. "Fine. We will take the job. What do you know about the gem's whereabouts?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Tasmara had been quiet during all this, her large brown-hazel eyes gazing with mingled horror and awe at both the gnoll and his repast. She may only have been a halfling for a few months but the appetite had come along with the body and she was momentarily tempted... before she noticed quite how greasy he was.
"This legend," she said, smiling brightly at Hakaan. "Any chance you could tell us a little more? I do like a good story and as a storyteller myself you strike me as a man who can deliver a fine tale"
“Hahaha! Excellent!” With a burst of laughter, the momentary tension is gone. The gnoll’s paw lands on his round belly, and he continues chuckling heartily. “I knew you would come around. I don’t know about where the gem is. I assume it’s in the Perfume District, since that’s where Henna is afraid to go. That’s why I asked you to work for me, see? Henna does all the work looking for the gem, while I just need to convince you! Haha!”
“The gem is called Grimalkin eye." Hakaan says between mouthfuls of crispy locusts. "Some say it's lost, others say it's stolen, but what does it matter? It washed up on the shore not too long ago!"
He leans forward, his eyes glinting with greed. "Henna's been looking for it, of course. She loves legends and magic. But me? I just want to see the look on her face when I take control of all her cats with it! Hahaha!" The gnoll laughs again, his whole body shaking with amusement.
As the deal is finalized, Hakaan calls for his kobold lackeys, and the same trio of kobolds scurry over to show you the way out.
Felix:
As you listen to Hakaan speak of the Grimalkin eye, you realize that you haven't come across this particular gemstone in your studies or travels. However, you recall the existence of various spells that can charm or command other creatures. You deduce that the Grimalkin eye may hold the power to create a similar effect.
"She keeps lesser cats around... Good to know." Still quietly Kerra pointed that interesting bit out and then nodded and took a step towards the exit. "Shall we go then?" Added she louder taking another step.
Outside she looked around again suspiciously (Perception: 17 and turned towards the Perfume District. "We are entering from the bad point. Or good, if we are after the thief. The perfumes are on the side where the market is, the poisons and all that - on this side."
The moment they stepped into the Perfume District, she followed Natasha from a short distance - watching, sniffing the air and looking for the signs, clear to the knowing eyes.
Natasha does her best to look rich and pompous - showing off her necklace of Helm and moving her body in such a way that each shiny facet of her armor was revealed to any who would be looking. “Guards,” Natasha began. “Surround me, yes? I don’t want the rabble getting any ideas.” A whisper to Kerra rather suddenly. “Was that good?”

When you move past the district’s more expensive mainland where the city’s perfumeries and reputable potion-makers toil and move onto Perfume District’s islands, you’re walking into increasingly unsavory alchemical shops, distilleries, factories, and storage facilities. The smell here is almost unbearable at times; the air is laced with chemicals and steam, and the river around the islands is a seething mass of bright, chemical colors.
As you’re walking down the street, you see a beggar sitting cross-legged on a filthy rag, his tattered clothes hang off his frail frame, barely covering his skeletal body, a bowl in front of him. A modest shop stands out between the shady buildings, its signs says "Whispers of Wonder", various trinkets displayed on its shop window. A tiefling man stands on a street corner, beckoning passersby with a sultry gaze, he wears a tight-fitting leather outfit, the deep red color complementing his dark skin and horns.
Kerra, Felix & Daphyra:
You both notice this, and Inky notices it as well. A pair of scrappy alley cats seem to be trailing behind you. The cats blend in seamlessly with their dingy surroundings, their matted fur and gaunt frames attesting to their rough life on the streets. When you spot them, the cats quickly dart out of sight, vanishing into the shadows of an alleyway, but after a minute or two they start following you again.

"Noticed the cats? I wonder whose cats are they." Kerra said to the others but personally was more interested in the beggar - eyes and ears of any street. After Natasha's overly generous jest, she walked to the man directly.
"See that money bag walking? She is here for the real stuff. Not the fluff on the shelves. Word on the streets, Raheed got something good recently. Know where to find him now?"
