Castien followed the bartender, keeping his voice low he continued
“ Before you reveal an answer to my question, allow me to elaborate that I am aware of what’s going on in this town and here to help, i trust you are aware of what I am? “
He trusts it would be evident that he is a blood hunter, he didn’t explain how aware he was on the situation in this town, for he didn’t know but expressed this much to hopefully bestow some comfort to the bartender
"It seems that you know more than me I'm afraid. All I know is that the farmers and such from the surrounding villages, they've been acting oddly when the come in to town. Less social, stay away from the taverns. They just go about whatever business they have and then leave. And when they look at you...well I've seen that look before, when a predator is trying to decide if you're prey."
Castien was leaning up against a barrel of wine as he listened to the bartender, his words struck a nerve with him as he was all too familiar with staring down prey with murderous intent, after all he was a predator
“ I am familiar with such a look… “
he said broodily, frowning softly to himself
" What’s say you answer my last question and I buy you a round for your trouble? “
“ In my defence, I didn’t know that bartenders drunk their own product “
he admitted, unlike other high elves Castien wasn’t one to look down on other species, that was his family and relatives, Castien was born an outcast and it was one thing he took pride in because he’d hate to be like other high elves
He shook Pike’s hand
” Good to meet you Pike, do you want to hear my last question? “
He‘s glad he found another way to deal with this, than having to intimidate people, unless your a cur or a vamp, there was no need
“ Thank you for your cooperation, it was most helpful “
and then he turned on heel and started headed towards the door of the back room, he had work to do and will be leaving shortly for the graveyard, once he is well supplied
The marketplace was, a bit predictably, at the crossroads of the main thoroughfares under the eye of the ever watchful tower. It was hardly a thriving marketplace, but more than adequate for a community this size. It took Castien almost no time to note the location of the blacksmith and general store among a variety of smaller, specialized shops...
Castien was searching for a few things within the market, which could protect him during his investigation, one would be Mistletoe to ward off spirits, which he could hopefully obtain from a flowersmarket and any flower or herb that could hopefully mask scent
The smell of dried herbs draws Castien to a small, ramshackled shop advertising the local herbalist. Just as he's about to enter, a small red blur hurtles past him...
The call from the outraged shopkeeper was enough to snap Castien out of his deep thought on the villagers of this town, anyone could be a member of the cult and he had to be wary for any strange behaviour, that’s when a red blur hustles past him and he swiftly spins around on his heel and casts mage hand to grab onto the arm of the red blur and pull them back towards him
(casting the spell is automatic, but I am going to ask for a grapple check to grab the thief with it. Grapple is an attack option that replaced your attack roll with an Athletics skill check. Success means you are holding them in place.)
The thief, a red skinned Tiefling with a thrashing tail and black hair, struggles futilely against the mage hand while her tail thrashes and coils around her leg.
There's a clattering thunk as a coin purse drops to the ground.
"Can't prove I had it." She says, staring at Castien with vengeful eyes.

"Aye, we have quite a few choices"
He leads Castien into the back.

The bartender gives a hoarse laugh.
"That doesn't mean much, stranger. It's my bar!"
He offers a hand.
"Name's Pick"
Castien laughs fondly to himself
“ In my defence, I didn’t know that bartenders drunk their own product “

"You may as well, though I promise no answers 'til I hear it."
“ Have any of your regulars stopped coming to the bar? if so, how long has it been since you seen them? “
This question was implying, if any of the bartenders regulars have died recently or mysteriously disappeared

He strokes his chin thoughtfully.
"Not that I can think of."
“ Then let’s hope we keep it that way “
Castien tipped the brim of his leather hat
“ Thank you for your cooperation, it was most helpful “

(What specifically is Castien looking for?)

The smell of dried herbs draws Castien to a small, ramshackled shop advertising the local herbalist. Just as he's about to enter, a small red blur hurtles past him...
"Stop! Thief!" Someone yells.

Grapple check: 7

Resist grapple 17
Castien's Mage Hand grabs hold of thief by the collar of her cloak, stopping her short and holding her in place.
(Surprise round is over. Do you want to roll into combat and fight it out, or try and talk her into surrendering?)
OOC: talk to her and if she wants to get in a fight, I’d like to try my hand at defence and understand those mechanics
