The town of Greenest was founded by the halfling Dharva Scatterheart, a rogue who fancied herself the queen of the Greenfields. Scatterheart passed away without ever achieving that level of eminence, but her town grew into a thriving community. Its success isn’t surprising, since Greenest is the only town of any size astride the Uldoon Trail, the most direct road between the eastern cities of the Dragon Coast, Cormyr, and Sembia with the Coast Way running south to the great cities of Amn, Tethyr, and far Calimshan. The trade caravans that pass through Greenest bring gold to the town’s merchants and craftsfolk. The town has also become a popular spot for wealthy families looking to get out of the big cities, in recent years, they have flocked to Greenest in greater numbers.
Greenest has enjoyed an era of relative peace and prosperity since its founding, and the growing community now boasts a sizeable population upwards of 500 in the town proper and the surrounding farmlands. Soon, that will be brought to an end. Strange things are afoot in the Sword Coast. Villages and farms have been turned over by large groups of bandits. Weird creatures roam the wilderness at night. And the dragons have grown restless, with many having been spotted near populated areas as of late.
You are members of the Silver Veil, a small but profitable mercenary group that makes its coin by hiring out members as guards to traveling merchants or caravans. Recently, you were assigned to escort a retiring and wealthy merchant as he moves his family out to Greenest. After you arrive in the town, you take your few days of rest as you usually do, then prepare to head out. Before you leave however, you're approached by the town's leadership, and asked to investigate some peculiar going-ons in the town...
Greetings forum denizens! I'm here to run a Tyranny of Dragons campaign, but done a little differently! This campaign will be for all, whether you've already played through a ToD campaign, haven't finished one yet, or haven't even begun one!
Before you apply to the campaign, here are some things to keep in mind:
I like to run campaigns that lean heavily into the roleplaying aspect. You'll be expected to interact with the other player characters regularly. Friendships? Rivalries? Romances? Have at it, just don't leave me separately interacting with 5 players all the time, I hate it!
That being said, you don't need to be a Best Seller's level writer to join this campaign. So long as you make an effort to roleplay, I'm happy! (=
You don't need it at the start, but keep an idea for a personal quest in the back of your mind for your character. At some point, we'll hop off the main campaign track to go tackle that.
This will be a loooong campaign, and there is a lot to get through. I'd like to have a group of people that can commit to posting a few times a day most of the time, falling back to a minimum of once a day if needed.
The campaign will be played here on the forums.
Here is a list of sourcebooks that can be used for character creation: - Player's Handbook - Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide - Xanathar's Guide to Everything - Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - Fizban's Treasury of Dragons - From Monsters of the Multiverse: Aasimar, Changeling, Eladrin, Genasi, Goliath, and Shifter.
The details I need from you are listed below: - Character Name | - Race | - Class | - Background | - Backstory | (how did your character come to be a member of the Silver Veil? what personal motivations does your character have?)
I'm hankering for a new campaign, so I'd like to get this off the ground asap. So hurry up and apply if you're interested! Drop it here, or in my DM's, or on your soundcloud. Blog. Wherever!
Character Name: Crannoc Greenthorn (<-- link to dndbeyond character sheet) Race: Custom Lineage from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (mixed race, mother an elf, father a child of a dryad and aasimar) (Free feat from Custom Lineage: Telekinetic - Wisdom, distant legacy of his aasimar grandfather). Class: Cleric - Nature Domain (At much higher level, may multi-class to Divine Soul Sorcerer, taking after his grandfather). Background and Backstory: See (first) spoiler just below:
Background: Sylvan Wanderer (custom - see character sheet)
Backstory:
The sound calls to Crannoc. As it always has.
The swift rushing of wind in the glen, the gentle patter of the forest brook on its bed of stones and moss, the trees creaking in their ever-moving stillness. The flutter and fall of wing and paw. Silvanus' world. His children. Whispering. Laughing. Sighing.
Screaming.
There had been screaming of late. Not always sound in the air. Crannoc Greenthorn has sensed it in the roots of his dryad grandmother's great heart tree and in the unease of the wandering wood elves. The... dissonance. Something beyond what outsiders would simply call "Nature, red in tooth and claw." Something inimical to the natural order of things.
Imbalance. And perhaps far worse. Something is wrong.
And so Crannoc had ventured out from his beloved home in the Misty Forest. Spurred by the strains he feels in the very skein of Nature itself. Searching for some cause outside the world he knows. Sent on behalf of all Silvanus' creations in his woodland home. But not knowing exactly why or how or what. South the voices and sounds had urged him, skirting the worn road the city-dwellers called the Trade Way, swimming the Winding Water and the River Cronthar, giving a wide berth to the teeming city of Elturel. It was just past there that he had come upon a band of (mostly) humans on the road, well-armed but tending their wounded after having repelled an attack by overly confident bandits.
Crannoc's instincts had kicked in and he had called on Silvanus' wild grace to close wounds and staunch the flow of blood. And now somehow he finds himself welcomed among them. These town-dwelling mercenaries. The Silver Veil, they call themselves. And he supposes he should call himself one of them as well now, though deep down he wonders if he ever would truly be. And yet, their destination matches his. South further still to the town of Greenest, nestled in wide, un-forested plains that leave Crannoc feeling exposed and unsettled. Yet his sense from Silvanus continues to tell him that this was where he is needed. To stem the source of the invisible threat.
He strides with a confidence he does not fully feel, his own divine magic from his aasimar grandfather singing in his veins in harmony with Nature's whispers. A sycamore seedling floats and dances around him, drifting, turning, falling, yet somehow never reaching the ground. His brown eyes watchful as if both predator and prey at once. Reaching out with the ageless senses of the tall trees.
Crannoc senses the commotion of the town before he truly sees or hears it. Like a wolfpack under distant threat, a beehive sensing faraway smoke, a grove with its entwined roots just beginning to wither, turning and pulsing in ungrounded confusion. The milling people. He recoils a little but forces himself to continue into Greenest, sycamore seedling whirling up above his head in agitation.
One day, once he has found and healed the source of the wrongness, set aright the disturbance in the skein of Nature, perhaps Crannoc could return home to his cool shaded bowers and glens deep in the Misty Forest.

- Character Name | Sedge - Race | Eladrin - Class | Warlock - Background | Far Traveler - Backstory | (how did your character come to be a member of the Silver Veil? what personal motivations does your character have?)
Born the second-youngest of seven, Sedge and his siblings were servants of the Archfey Icirrus, an adventurous fey who had the misfortune of being imprisoned in the Feywild due to a curse, never able to leave and pursue his dream of traveling the realms. Rather than languish hopelessly, he sent his servants out into the various planes of the world, tasked with bringing back stories and fragments of memory that would allow the Archfey to get just a taste of the world outside. Sedge, sixth of seven siblings, was tasked with exploring the Prime Material plane.
His initial days were clumsy but allowed him to gain his footing. Having made his initial observations of this new world he finds himself in, Sedge joined up with the Silver Veil when he heard they were looking for members. It pays well, allowing him to support himself, but more importantly lets him travel and interact with people who might share with him the wonders of the world.

In another life, Gawain might have lived out his life in his home village, spending his days as a farmer or a smith. Fate would have it another way. A group of strange clerics came through one evening, staying the night at the local inn. When morning came, the strangers were gone, along with several of the villagers - his brother among them. Frustrated by the lack of action from his parents and the rest of the village, Gawain himself left in pursuit of them. He never found them, and he never returned home.
That was years ago, and the trail has long since gone cold. Unwillingly to go home without his brother, Gawain ended up joining the Silver Veil group as a way to make coin while still being able to travel in the vague hope that he might stumble across information about the missing villagers and his brother.
Backstory: Yashin was raised in a nomadic clan in the Spine of the World. An accomplished hunter, he also had an interest and aptitude in crafting and carving and sought out dwarves and giants in the mountains to trade and practice what basic skills he could learn. A younger brother, he never had the strength and skill of his older siblings, and as a result was never held in high regard by the clan. Driven by a sense of wanderlust, he set out on his own to learn more of himself and the world around him.
He is driven by a competitive desire to be the best at whatever he does, to constantly outdo himself and gain greater and greater accomplishments to someday return to his clan with tales of great honor. He joined the Silver Veil to chase those great deeds.

Shra is a fire dancer, the epitome of the feline connection with the Sun; heir of an ancient line of fire dancers within her clan who passed their secrets mother to daughter for many generations. Tr'r'yshret, the legendary first ancestress of the line, is sung of as having leapt forward into battle, a torch in each hand, and cast pyrotechnics on them so they became swirling, spark-spitting blinders that traced bewildering patterns of fire and smoke around the enemy as she tumbled and twirled in and out, weaving her dance of flame and somehow juggling torches, rapier or dagger, and her own claws at just the right moments to rake bellies and slash throats as she cartwheeled past, or to pierce through tiny gaps in armor and then tumble out of range of any return strike while still somehow maintaining the ribbons of flaming, sparking, spitting reek that were so bewildering the foe.
The fire dancers of her clan traditionally give birth to only a single kit, who becomes the next fire dancer of the clan. Twins, such as Shra, are very rare and are regarded when they come as dedicated to the Daouine (Fate). As such, they are turned forth as soon as they are able to make their own path in the world, for otherwise the Daouine will be drawn like the lightning and like the lightning too tightly contained would burst forth upon the clan. And the most traditional profession for such daughters to pursue is that of the wandering gladiator knight; such was the life she led until she befriended a fellow gladiator who had been a Witchlight Hand and accepted their invitation to accompany them when the opportunity arose for them to return there. Shra became more and more fascinated with the Feywild, the Witchlight Carnival, and in particular the masterful artistry of faerie acrobats besides those who followed the combat arts. But while she now views herself as an artist first and a warrior second, and delights now in the full spectrum of the dancers' art (and is increasingly intrigued by music and poetry, the fire dance of battle is still closest to her heart; so when she heard of an opening in such a convivial company of battle kindred as the Silver Veil she was signing on before her ear-fur stopped quivering with the words. - Backstory | Rachel spent her younger years as a messenger for the city council of Berdusk, eventually signing on with the town guard and working for them for a few decades. After all her years on the street she was eventually offered the position of District Captain but rather than accept it she resigned and signed on with the Silver Veils. She is a calm almost matronly woman with cropped silver-black hair and an easy manner. She's trained many young guardsmen but the long years of uneventful street patrols and arresting petty criminals haven't really given her many opportunities to develop her skills overly much.
When she was younger she lost her first partner in what was officially written up as an accidental fall in the city cistern, but she swears to this day she saw eyes in the dark before he fell.....so many eyes......
Her time with the Silver Veils so far has been the most activity she's seen in a very long while and she's not 100% sure about her decision to sign up......but she couldn't take the Captains job.....no one can know that she's 45 years old and can't read....

- Class | Fighter
