Character name: Gnohow Race: Gnome Class/subclass: Artificer - Battle Smith Background: City Watch Investigator Backstory:
Gnohow Nicknack Norbertstern is a young gnome from the port city of <insert city here>, and is the brother of a famous gnomish inventor, who had always tried to pass on to Gnohow a passion for artifice.
Gnohow’s brother disappeared over ten years ago, after having been commissioned for a job on the high seas. Before he left, he gave to Gnohow one of his most treasured possessions. An all-purpose tool that he won as first prize in an inventing competition. He should have known from this that something was fishy, because he normally kept it with him at all times.
When his brother didn’t return, and in fact no-one from the ship or the ship itself returned, he went to the local watch about it. Finding no-one there interested or capable, he joined up to give himself the power to investigate himself.
That was many years ago now, and for the first time he has come across some information of relevance. A rumour has surfaced that a gnome artificer was hired to sail out into the Sea of the Dead to provide means for Captain Hailstorm to hide his legendary treasure.
It made sense, his brother had prepared a number of infusions related to breathing underwater before he had left. And with that Gnohow determined to try and follow the path of his brother, and either find him alive, or find at least find out his fate and what he died for. He had been practicing the skill of artifice for many years now, it was about time it came in useful for more than solving local crime.

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Backstory: Varin was adopted by a well-known noble family desperate for an heir, Varin was five years old at the time. Varin studied to become the new head of the family for years and made occasional appearances to the public. Varin hated his life as a noble, but it was leagues better than what he'd had to suffer through in the orphanage. By the time Varin had turned twenty, his mother and father died suddenly of an unknown cause. Varin was terrified of becoming the new head of the family, so when Varin heard rumors of Captain Hailstorm's lost treasure he saw it as the perfect escape. Varin attempted to leave, but was almost foiled and only escaped because his draconic powers revealed themselves in his moment of need. Now that Varin has managed to escape, he is ready to go after Captain Hailstorm's lost treasure.
Character name: 'Naut, short for "Aquanaut," the name given to them by the first humanoids they had contact with. Their true name is a complex assemblage of guttural thrummings and whalelike calls in Aquan, unfit for most tongues. Pronouns are they/them.
Deep in the Hadopelagic Zone, far, far beyond the farthest reaches of any humanoid civilization, the sun's everpresent light fades from view. Every mote of light is swallowed up by the churning bowels of the ocean, leaving the depths utterly untouched, utterly unseen. Down there, nothing can grow. In the depths, life-giving sustenance descends from above in the form of detritus, specks of dead plankton, fecal matter, and decayed corpses. In the depths, life exists thanks to the deaths of those above.
Thus, to the dwellers of the deep, one thing was exceptionally clear: The depths held life. The surface held only death.
A young 'Naut spent their early years adhering to this philosophy. There was nothing for them above, the only thing that mattered was survival in the dark depths, working with their clan to survive, to escape from and hunt the toothy things that lurked in the dark waters, to keep scraping out a meager existence. Despite this, however, they never truly felt as if they had any purpose. It made sense to them that there would be more than just survival, but they had never found anything that called to them. That is, until the shipwreck.
It descended into the deep like a comet of wood and rope and fabric, crashing to the sea floor in a cloud of silt. Immediately, it was the most interesting thing in the abyssal pit that was 'Naut's home. Everyone had some reason to be interested in it. There was valuable scrap material and derelict to be repurposed for 'Naut's people. There were succulent human corpses for the beasts of the deep water, and excellent shelter for the place's prey. For 'Naut, however, the resources were not what called to them. It was the ship itself.
Something about this vessel inexplicably drew 'Naut like nothing had before. Perhaps it was the idea of a vessel to actually carry people along the top of the water that interested them so. Perhaps it was because it was a sign that there was indeed more than death above. There was a life of some sort to be lived upon the waves. Regardless of the reasons, the ship became their passion project. Using what resources they could recover, borrow, barter for, or steal, they slowly began restoring it. They patched and caulked the hull, sewed up the sails and repaired the splintered mast.
As they worked, they received more than a small amount of ridicule. To all others, this quest of theirs seemed like a pointless waste of resources, but this did not prevent them from continuing. At last, they were finished, having fully restored the ship to its former glory. And after that... well, what next? They had expended this glorious treasure they had been gifted, and it wasn't like any more ships were going to come falling down. Not only that, but they had made themself the laughingstock of the clan. They went over the items that they had salvaged from the ship, to see if there was anything they could make of them, and there was one in particular that stood out to them.
It was something like a suit of armor, but seemingly completely watertight, with a large round helmet and tanks full of air. It seemed to be some sort of device the humans had used to survive under the water, to endure the pressure. Pressure was no issue for 'Naut down here, but up there... their boneless form would have quite a hard time keeping itself together, and they had heard terrible tales of those who tried going above, and simply fell apart. However, with a suit like that... 'Naut could explore above, could seek out the origin of their ship. They immediately set out to repurpose it, changing it from a diving suit to a surfacing suit, something they could use to survive above the Hadopelagic Zone.
When they were finally done, they set out without looking back, with nothing more than some basic equipment and the sunken ship's name. They eventually surfaced, scaring the everloving daylights out of a merchant crew. Eventually, their inquiries into the ship's name have led them to the battle that claimed the life of Captain Hailstorm, and rumors of his treasure, and they have chosen to seek it out.
(I don't know if you have plans for captain Hailstorm's sunken ship or not, but it might be interesting if 'Naut actually found his sunken ship, if you have no plans. If not, it could just be a random ship that was sunk during the battle. That's why I chose not to specifically reference a name, since I don't know if his ship has a definite name yet.)

I love your character idea so much, it seems really cool!
Maiken, born to humble beginnings always enjoyed the monthly gladiatorial games that would come to his hometown. The glory and fame that resulted in it enveloped his daily thoughts and he started training as young lad in hopes of one-day making a name for himself as well. Upon becoming of age, he signed his name to a roster and attempted to make a name for himself. Unfortunately, the gladiatorial games were a lot tougher than he thought they would be. Masters of unparalleled strength, toughness, and technique constantly berating him, forced him to learn and learn quickly. 4 years after joining the gladiatorial arena, he finally won his first bout, conquering his feelings of inadequacy and failure. Upon gaining a new sense of confidence in himself, Maiken proceeded to gain notoriety and fame as he turned his losing record around.
