"I think we make a run for it and find a nice place to rest. And hope they don't come for us in the mean time." Tryn says and stays well away from the large structure and near a place where he can hide on a moment's notice.

Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.
Rayce will follow Tryn's lead and keep running towards a safer position while keeping an eye on the fortress and any pursuit. If she has the chance, she will cast an illusion of Goraseth running from hiding spot to hiding spot behind her and doing a bad job if concealing himself. The aim is for the illusion to attract attention instead of the party until they are all out of sight.
Goraseth sees that everyone is finally in a safe position and follows the group. Every now and then he looks over his shoulder to be sure no ghouls are coming out the fortress. "Let us find a good place to rest. Somewhere we can defend during the night if these things are coming out at night." On the way, Goraseth reflects on the battle, wondering how many more undead are populating this place. They had killed something like six giant spiders and maybe ten or twelve ghouls by his count. He smiles. The team did really well, it really starts to feel as when he was with his gladiator troupe. Bahamut would be proud.
After Tharanau's badly placed ray he realises that it's futile to attack these enemies with so little left and no more spell slots. The whole group is exhausted. So he too turns and follows the others. A rest will do them all good.
With roll of Goraseth, i won't roll on any table to see if something random attacks you. You have fund a safe spot. However you have arrived at the axeholm shortly before midday, so i would say you would be close to 2 or 3 p.m. With that i can let you take short rest, and if you want to go back now. You would be around 5 or 6 p.m. back at the axeholm. Or you can spend the rest of the day in the wilderness (random table will be rolled after short rest) then make camp for the night to get long rest.

Rayce is on board with a short rest then a long rest.
"That place is infested, but i believe we have made a significant dent in their numbers. I am proud to be part of this group, you are all very capable fighters. I would propose that when we go back, we do so quietly and try to avoid them massing again.
I got a glimpse of something through the inner windows which one of you mentioned, a ghostly shape. Do any of you have an idea of what it might be?"
Rayce rolled 9 nature and 21 religion to try to remember anything about the creature.
Tharanau talks to the others. "I will need a long rest so my magic can restore, a short break will not change much." Then he agrees with Rayce: "this was a tough fight. But the heated cauldrons were very useful. Maybe if we could get behind of one or two ballistae (?!) we stand a better chance against these foes? About the ghostly shape you saw, I wouldn't know what that could possibly be. Probably bad...." (rolled nature 1 and arcana 11)
"Aye, I'd like a short rest to heal the large wounds and I would probably need a full rest to restore my divine energy." says Goraseth, while preping the camp. He then reply to Rayce "No Rayce, I have no clue...maybe a ghost..."
"I've seen that, too, Rayce, but it didn't seem to come to attack us. Perhaps it isn't hostile, maybe we can talk to it?" Suggests Tryn and concludes, "I think, now that we are relatively safe, I think we can heal up full and go back tomorrow. Who knows how many more ghouls are inside there. Best to be prepared as much as possible."

"Progo likes the thought of taking the time to plan our next attempt to enter. Best to do so at full strength. Progo thinks now that we have some intel to some of the buildings setup perhaps we can determine a way to best open the door." He pulls out his bew shield, and starts to try to polish it up a bit.
Rayce has idea about what it might be: She heard about ghost of elven females sometimes being able to stay undead in this world, if extreme spite would fill their heart before or upon death. Their apparition in stories would fit what you all saw: "Its face is wreathed in a wild tangle of hair, its body clad in wispy rags that flutter and stream around it." However how that elven spirit would find itself in dwarven ruins is yet unknown to you.
Short rest is taken, rest of the day goes uneventful. (remember to substract your rations, and consider waterskins to be empty, Or roll survival (DC10): A foraging character finds nothing on a failed check. On a successful check, roll 1d6 + the character’s Wisdom modifier to determine how much food (in pounds) the character finds, then repeat the roll for water (in gallons).)
Then you proceed to take a long rest in the wilderness. (please describe in what circumstances you sleep /for example, do you have a tent or some blanket from eq or some other idea to make yourself comfortable/safe for the night).

Using two hit dice in the short rest Survival : 11 , 3 pd food, 6 gallons of water
goraseth looks in his bag to find only a bedroll. “Should we look for a cave or something similar for the night ? Tryn , can you do your spell that can tell us if someone is approaching?”. He also remembers that he has a hunting trap that he will set up as a defense system for the night.
Even though Tharanau had wanted to return right away and put an end to these creatures sooner rather than later, he finally finds calm in the woods. After a short rest he searches the surrounding shrubs and bushes and is able to hunt down two fat rabbits, which he prepares over a small smokeless fire for dinner. He shares with whoever is hungry. He then prepares a shelter made from sticks and leaves and curls into his blanket. He is happy to take last watch in the morning hours. (Long rest confirmed?)
Tryn wards a 20 foot area with the Alarm spell as ritual but seems to have little time to find food or water (Survival: 6, but I guess there's enough food already from Seth and Tharanau, right? I'm unsure about the water, though. ).

yes it is plenty, everyone can benefit from a short rest as you did. play along and either describe or discuss the next step (as in do you travel or long rest or something else)
