"Yeah, how far is it?" another man says. You look this group over. They are a group of young men, probably from some local town, and not one of them over 18 winters. Their talk and swagger scream more of their inexperience than the youth that clings to their faces like newborn babes. On closer inspection, you see that their armor is more makeshift/put together from old clothing and work leather and the weapons they brandish are farming tools. "We heard they got some problems with giants and we mean to help them out, for the right amount of coin that is." the first one who spoke asks. He looks back to the others with him and grins. The other boys shake their heads in agreement, smiling big smiles as they do so. Another youth, a brash red-headed lad of about 15, wearing a padded shirt and leather apron, carrying a large club steps forward. "What about you grandad?" he directs his question to Essendrum. "Can you raise your old hand and point us in the right direction?" He finishes his statement by swinging his large club off his shoulder.
“You’ll find Triboar less than a day’s march back along the road. They’ve had trouble and it’s good to see neighbors coming to their aid. They might put you to work repairing the inn if you wish to take service, but I can’t guess whether there will be much coin in it for you. I expect the farmers there are no wealthier than your parents and you might profit more by guarding your farms and working the land. When giants make war, few men can stand against them. If it’s adventuring you’ve set your mind to, you boys might want to begin with something smaller.”
Essendrum smiles. He lifts his arm gingerly as though it is difficult and then turns his palm upward. His fingers form an odd shape and he speaks a word in Draconic. A tiny image of a boy with a club appears on his finger tips. The image looks up and a vastly larger image of a fire giant appears and steps on him. The images are perfect recreations of the boy and the deceased fire giant which linger for dramatic effect and then dissolve into wisps of smoke.
”But I am just an old sage and know little of such things. Perhaps Flint or Sir Enoch can advise you on the best course of action for a young man eager for employment as a soldier.”
Enoch hid a grin as he heard the eager youth talk about helping out. "The old man's right," he said after Essendrum had finished. "Bravery's important, but training is what will keep you alive." He stood and looked the crew over. "You guys being willing to help is a good start, and sometimes you need to face a fight even knowing you'll lose... but no one wants to see you lose your lives if it can be avoided." He then rolled his eyes, adding "And you're not always going to make coin in situations like this. In fact, when people are hurting, often you'll need to spend your own in order to really help out."
The paladin paused a bit to let his last words sink in. Then he smiled. "Tell you what though, which one of you is the best at fighting? I'll spar you real quick, and see how well you do. If you do decently, I'll give you my shield, so you'll at least have something decent to help defend the town. But if you do poorly, you guys either go home and gain a few more years on you before adventuring; or you head to Triboar and help where you can, but don't dare ask for any coin.
"So, how about it? Willing to see where you stand?"
Hopping down from the wagon with all the grace of an athletic porcupine, Spike says, “I’m sure Lady Dara of Triboar will be happy for all the help she can get, as long as you aren’t leaving your own homes defenseless…It seems the giants are roaming about everywhere, not just in the direction of the cities.”
As Essendrum and Enoch make their statements, he nods in agreement, saying, “They’ve got the right of it, lads. If ye mean to fight and help the people of Triboar, tis a noble thing, but something ye should be doing because it helps the people, not because it lines yet pockets or brings ye glory.”
”I’ll sweeten the pot as well. If one of you stand up against our heroic representative here to his satisfaction, I’ll give ye a healing potion to help save yer skins after a tough fight,” he adds.

Essendrum: The red-haired lad steps back a bit once Essendrum displays his simple cantrip-powered dramatization. He slides back into the middle of the group and whispers to one of them.
Enoch and Flint: With the proclamation of reward, after Enoch's statement of spending their own money to help folks, one of the larger boys, a hulking brute whose features display something of an orcish origin, steps forward. "I'll spare ya." he says in a raspy voice. With that, he steps out from where the two groups are gathered, about 6 ft., and bandishes a large club. "Let's go, tin man," he says with a bit of a snarl. Enoch roll!

Smiling broadly the thick-muscled farm boy raises his club and swings. He lets out a hard breath that resembles a whistle as the air hits and bounces off his small tusks.

Enoch easily side-stepped the youth's club even as he casually pulled his shield from off his back and donned it. He then drew his sword and grinned. "C'mon, you can do better than that!"

Enoch again side-stepped, then swung the flat of his blade towards the youth's head; even if it missed, the paladin figured, it would serve as a distraction for the following trip, as he stooped to sweep the half-orc's leg.
